2 Page Two August 12, 2018 Steubenville Conference is a powerful, fun opportunity for 8th-12th graders to experience the personal love of Christ in the vibrant nature of our Catholic faith. Many Thanks... Dear Visitation Parish Family, Through your generosity, a group of 41 teens and chaperones were graced to attend the Steubenville Conference Weekend (July 13-15), joining thousands of other students from across the country. The conference centered on each person s individual and unique identity as a Beloved son or daughter of God the Father through the Blood of Jesus Christ. Several students were only able to attend because of scholarships provided by your support of our fundraising efforts. Thank you! We heard in a new and fresh way, the mercy Jesus is extending into our lives, His invitation into the new kind of life He offers through relationship with Him not just in a different way of living but in a daily encounter with this awesome love that neither the world, nor any creature can ever offer us. One of our most powerful experiences was time spent in Eucharistic Adoration. As Catholics, we take Christ at His word when He says, This is My Body. Through His priest, that piece of bread is no longer bread but God Himself (pretty wild belief, but so, so beautiful)! For many of our students, this was the first time experiencing the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist during Adoration. Powerful outward manifestations of the Lord acting in people occurred while at Adoration, including actual physical healings that happened there that weekend! Visitation Catholic Church Thank you for your generous support of our Stuebenville Conference this summer held at Franciscan University in Ohio. Tom Logue I asked the students how they thought the conference affected their relationship with God overall. One student, who clearly had experience of intimacy of the love God the Father has for him, gave this very beautiful, but simple answer, It made me see Him more as a loving Father that approves of you just the way you are and He doesn't make you earn it. He is such a good Father! A Grateful Farewell... WITH GREAT GRATITUDE I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO ANNOUNCE to all of you that I am moving on to a new chapter in my life. Beginning this August, I will be re-entering the seminary at Mundelein Seminary. Ever since I was a very little boy I have felt this call from the Lord to love, serve, and know Him in this way, and I feel so grateful and privileged to take these steps toward Holy Orders (God-willing!). I ask all of you for your continued prayers and support. Please always remain close to Jesus in the Eucharist who truly loves and knows your heart! 3 Nineteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time NEWS FROM THE P.I.T. PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney The greatest challenge of any Christian is to live out the simple phrase found in our Second Reading from St. Paul to the Ephesians: So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us. Eph 5:1-2 hy is this so hard? Because the sacrifice of W Christ is detached from any utility. Let me explain. Usually, because of attachment to worldly needs and pleasures, we are willing to make sacrifices for the sake of some return. I ll offer help to a friend, knowing well that they will have to repay the favor sometime down the road. We have a tendency to expect things in return of the sacrifices we make: if it be material sacrifices or even spiritual, we expect a return. Lord, I will offer so many prayers, if you then guarantee giving me what I want! Yet there is something about Christ s sacrifice which is completely detached from any kind of return. here is no guarantee that we will respond to T Christ s love. And if we are truthful, many of us live our lives as if Christ s sacrifice has no affect on our day to day lives. We are asked to live like Christ! To love even if we receive nothing in return. Even if it means making sacrifices for others. even if they don t appreciate our love. t seems like a difficult task and it s okay to ask I the question, How are we to receive the strength to do this? The answer is found in our Gospel. It is through the bread from heaven, revealed as the Body of Christ to us! In receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, we can be transformed into the life of Christ. We will be able to have the strength to live like Christ! Let us detach ourselves once again to worldly needs and pleasures and be imitators of our God! At such times, I am haunted by the purity of Christ's sacrifice. As Jesus bled out his life on the cross, we were utterly useless to him. He revealed that to love someone means to release that person from the tyranny of usefulness from the expectation that he or she exists to fulfill my worldly needs and desires. Rev. Msgr. J. Wilfrid Parent WREATH SALE NEXT WEEKEND AUG. 18/19 AT ALL MASSES August 12, 2018 Page Three Filipino Simbang Gabi Sunday! 4 Page Four August 12, 2018 Scripture Reflections for NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD August 12, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: SEE HERE Plenty of things in our daily living clouds our vision. By allowing Christ to heal your vision, we are able to see and love again as the Father sees us and loves us. FIRST READING Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water (1 Kings 19:4-8). Elijah had just had his most successful encounter with the enemies of the Lord. He had challenged the priests of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel and defeated them. This should have been the most joyful moment of Elijah s ministry. Yet, almost immediately, the queen (Jezebel) sent Elijah a letter proclaiming that she would have him put to death. Elijah s reaction is powerful. He becomes severely depressed and goes off into the desert to die. God sent an angel to nourish him and guide him on his journey to the mountain where Moses had met God and where Elijah would now encounter God in the whispering of the breeze. SECOND READING Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love (Ephesians 4:30 5:2). We continue our readings with an appeal to live as true Christians. We were sealed by the Holy Spirit on the day of our Baptism. We should share that love in our dealings with each other. We have seen the example of Christ who died for us. We should be willing to love and even die for our brothers and sisters. This reading is a wonderful reminder that our Christian calling must be lived in our everyday events. We must be different in the way we treat people: compassionate and loving. Visitation Catholic Church GOSPEL Jesus said, "I am the living bread; whoever eats this bread will live forever" (John 6:41-51). Jesus identifies himself as the bread of life that has descended from the heavens. Wisdom literature spoke of Lady Wisdom who would nourish the foolish with her bread and wine and instruct them in the ways of the Lord. Jesus is saying that he is the fulfillment of that promise. He has come into the world to instruct us as to who God is and what he wants of us. If we allow ourselves to be nourished by his instruction, then we will have eternal life. In the last verse, Jesus says that the bread that he will give us is his flesh for the life of the world. The Jews who heard this discourse were confused, for they thought they knew who Jesus was, i.e., the son of Joseph. They did not know his true identity, that he is the only-begotten Son of God. REFLECTION How s your vision? If you wear glasses, you ll remember the first time that the optometrist told you that you needed glasses... and the surprise when your vision prescription changed. Whether through glasses, contact lenses, or even surgery, most of us need help to see better from time to time. Elijah s vision had gone terribly wrong. Thinking himself a failure, he prayed for death. God s angel touched him and corrected his vision through food, drink, and words of encouragement. Seeing anew, he made the journey to Horeb. The Jews needed a vision correction, too. They thought they knew Jesus, as did his townsfolk did in the gospel shared a few weeks ago, but they don't really know him. It takes time to correct their vision to see him as the Son, who helps them see the Father. Their literal understanding of his words also blinds them to his identity as God s bread from heaven. Some vision correction requires a stronger prescription. Not all chose to understand these words. But for those who did, his flesh is the bread that gives life to the world. The Ephesians were also blinded by bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling. The corrective lens entailed kindness, compassion, and forgiving as God has forgiven. These little virtues help us take on the mind and heart of Christ and see the world through the lens that the Holy Spirit provides. These virtues help us listen to and learn from the Father by going to Jesus. He bakes us into bread for the world. Where do you see as God sees? Thank God. Where your vision is too narrow or literal, ask the Divine Physician for lenses that help you imitate God, as beloved children, who loves as Christ loves. 6 Page Six August 12, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES Jesus Is Alive in the Eucharist! S tudents throughout the Diocese of Joliet Catholic Schools have been spending hours before the Blessed Sacrament during the school day. They are learning and experiencing firsthand what wonderful gifts Jesus in the Holy Eucharist has to offer them and their families. At the end of the past school year, these students were asked, What does the Holy Eucharist mean to you? Their remarks were inspirational! The following is a Sixth grader s Eucharistic poem: FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Wednesday, August 15 *Holy Day of Obligation 6:15 AM Mass 8:15 AM Mass 6:30 PM Mass Mary had the unique role in the history of salvation of giving birth to Emmanuel: God-with-us. One might say that because of the Incarnation, Mary s physical existence had a role in salvation surpassed only by that of Jesus. Opening her soul to God would not have been enough to fulfill God s purposes. She had to be open to God with the totality of her being. Holy Spirit, enkindle us with the fire of the same love that burned within the Virgin Mary, so that we might rise up to God in prayer. Amen. Get Excited about the Catholic Faith! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Would you like to be baptized, receive the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist? Do you feel a calling to inquire about the Catholic faith? ASK LEARN DISCUSS The Fundamentals of our Faith. Our program starts in September. If you, a family member or someone you know would like more information about our RCIA program, please call the Visitation Rectory Office at A t a young age, this 6th grade student realizes the importance and need for us to believe that Jesus is present to us in the Eucharist. He also realizes that many of us question His True Presence in the Eucharist. This week make a visit to the Adoration Chapel and reflect upon this Sixth Grade student s thoughts about the Holy Eucharist. Ask yourself: Do you totally trust Jesus to give you the strength that you need in your life? Do you allow Him to guide you in those difficult times? Do you truly believe that your Lord and Savior, Jesus, is truly present in the Holy Eucharist? If you answered sometimes or never to any of these questions, pray to our Heavenly Mother, Our Lady of the Holy Eucharist to bring you closer to Her beloved Son, Jesus. Like any great Mother, she knows what is best for you and She can help you to experience that sign that Jesus is alive in the Eucharist! There is an empty hour the 4 th Saturday of each month at 8 pm. Please call Mary Lewis at or Joan Taylor at , to inquire about your special hour to spend time with your loving Jesus!
