By Father Michael Kearney I remember the first time I told my parents that I was thinking about going to the seminary... It was a summer evening. We went to Outback Steakhouse Restaurant in Naperville (off Ogden). If I was at the restaurant, I could even point to you where we sat down. I remember the details not because it was a wonderful memorable night, but because the words came as a shock to me! I remember saying, I m thinking about going to seminary. Which of course means, I think I m being called to be a priest. I couldn t get those words back in my mouth. The words were out there. At the time I said it, I didn t even believe them, but I said them out loud and to my parents! All of a sudden those words which were running in my mind had weight, had meaning, and the Lord revealed true over time. I see this in our readings this weekend, the importance of proclaiming our faith out loud! n our first reading, Joshua brings all the elders, I leaders, judges, and officers to declare out loud We will serve the Lord. Why? Because the people, though they may have struggled with it in the past, needed to make a recommitment to the Lord, verbally, out loud! And in the Gospel, as people were leaving Christ because they couldn t comprehend the Eucharist, He asked His apostles if they would leave too? The Lord was asking them to commit out loud who they would follow! The need to verbally respond and affirm our faith continues today and at every Mass! he priest, deacon, or Extraordinary Minister of T Holy Communion proclaims, The Body of Christ. Our response is Amen, which can be translated to I Believe or Truly. Even if you struggle with the understanding of our Lord giving us His Body and Blood, respond in faith and see how the Lord will reveal His truth to us over time! 2018 Catholic Ministries ANNUAL APPEAL Goal: $136, Amount Pledged: $157, Amount Paid: $146, Donor Count: 404 Thank you to all who have responded to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. We are most grateful for your generosity and will keep you in our prayers.

6 Page Six August 26, 2018 Scripture Reflections for TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD August 26, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: SERVING OUTSIDE THE BOX Our world, like the world of scriptural times, is filled with many categories or even pigeonholes we try to use to keep others away. But to live as Christ means to serve others ALL OTHERS. FIRST READING The LORD, our God, protected us along our entire journey (Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b). This passage speaks of the renewal of the covenant at Shechem. Joshua asks the people to choose between Yahweh and the gods of the nations. The necessity of choosing is also found in the Gospel. Joshua mentions that many of their ancestors previously served other gods. It is believed that many of those who left Egypt with Moses were not Israelites, but were pagan slaves who saw an opportunity to escape, and who then allowed themselves to be incorporated into Israel. SECOND READING We are members of his body (Ephesians 5:21-32). This reading has two major themes. One is based upon Stoic philosophy [Stoics believed that there was a proper order of things]. The passage also speaks about the obligation of husbands to love their wives. Would the author of this letter phrase his teaching the same way today? Was the teaching that women should be subordinate an eternal truth, or was it based upon cultural understandings of what God wanted? The teaching on marriage is very positive, teaching that marriage is a foreshadowing of the union between Christ and the Church. GOSPEL We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God (John 6:60-69). Visitation Catholic Church Jesus statement that he would give his flesh and blood for the people to devour was a statement that would have been scandalous to those who heard it. It required an act of total faith to believe that this was possible and it was what God wanted. Some of those who were listening to Jesus decided not to believe in him after this. Like the Jews in the desert after the exodus, they murmured at what Jesus told them. They then separated themselves from his disciples and went their own way. Jesus asked the twelve whether they were also planning to abandon him. Peter responded that there was nowhere that they could possibly go. They recognized that Jesus was the Holy One of God and that he spoke words of eternal life. This is one of the few times in the Gospel of John where Peter and the twelve are given a very positive opportunity to profess their faith. REFLECTION As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord, We also will serve the Lord, for he is our God. (Joshua 24:15, 18b). To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life (John 6:69a). Those who struggled through the Exodus, experienced the death of Moses, and made it to the Promised Land recommit themselves to the One who freed them from slavery and brought them there. Those who struggled with Jesus teaching, who belong to his inner circle, choose to remain. They have come to believe and are convinced that [Jesus is] the Holy One of God. (John 6:69b). If we honestly make the faith journey, we face similar questions: Do I stay or go? Believe or not? What difference does it make? Ephesians is our guide. Subordinate yourselves to Jesus words and ways. He embraced human limitations, even death, with the exception of sin. That sacrificial love and total gift of self is modeled in the relationship between husband and wife. It is a difficult and often misinterpreted teaching. For husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church and as their own bodies requires subordination, listening to and responding to what one hears. Obedience is about listening: ob-audire, to listen to. To love another person as I do my own body, I must listen to my body and do what it asks. Sometimes that listening stretches me. At other times, I must accept limitations. Serving the Lord and following the Holy One of God also stretches us and limits us, as do our human relationships. Jesus words and sharing in the Eucharist also stretch and limit us, calling us to live differently. But with Peter I must say To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. What say you? 8 Page Eight August 26, 2018 CULTIVATE INTERIOR SILENCE For some people it is difficult to stay quiet when silence descends upon a group of two or more. Why does that cause discomfort? Sometimes that uneasiness can stem from within the individual. One is not at peace with oneself. And that may come from not really knowing oneself. A comfortable silence can be experienced when one is at home.... owadays, it seems there s a growing uneasiness with personal contact. Many people are N feeling less comfortable with phone calls and communicate more through texting. It affords a comfortable distance. But it can also be the cause of an increased distancing between and among people, even family. There is no greater unity for each individual than that between himself and Christ. Now, as always, and yet, it seems more than ever, that Christ is the answer. Being at home with Jesus is an eternal desire for the human heart designed by God and offers the most rewarding satisfaction, even if unrecognized. Faith teaches us this. We are taught that faith is the one gift God will never refuse a soul. And, according to the saints, grace builds upon grace, increasing as it is used, never to be depleted. t the Adoration Chapel, our Lord is truly present A to us in the Holy Eucharist. One can go and pour out one s heart, or one can go and sit quietly before that refreshing fountain of grace. Sitting with Him who loves you, who died for you, who humbly subjects Himself to the constraints of the monstrance for your benefit, is a most efficacious way to turn down or turn off, the constant flow of thoughts that distract one from really knowing oneself before God. Realizing that one is a beloved child of God is a perfect starting point. From there it becomes easier and easier to be open to the love of God, thereby becoming a fountain of love for others. When we give Love a chance to help us believe we are truly loved, peace comes. Even if we say nothing at all, He Who Is, speaks to our hearts in silence and we can listen in silence. So, it is there, at the Adoration Chapel where one can meet Jesus, cultivate inner silence and then share its comforting effects with others. Our world needs prepared people who can evangelize by good example. It is not difficult to see where God is not. Become a registered adorer so that through you, others can see and hear God. There is a serious need for registered adorers. Please consider devoting one hour a week to our Lord. The following days need you: Sunday 1AM (every other week) Wednesday 2 AM - Empty Thursday 9 AM Saturday 8 PM (4 th Sat. of the month) - Empty Visitation Catholic Church First Saturday Devotions to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Next Saturday, Sept. 2 8:15 am, in the Church We extend a warm invitation to all parishioners to join us once a month for the Five First Saturdays Devotion in honor of Mary s Immaculate Heart, beginning with 8:15 am Mass. Devotion follows with 45 minutes of prayer, reflection, and meditation. Why five Saturdays? The number five is significant because Jesus told Sister Lucia (one of the Fatima seers) that there are five kinds of offenses and blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary: Blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception. Blasphemies against her Virginity. Blasphemies against her Divine Maternity. Blasphemies of those who openly seek to foster in the hearts of children, indifference or contempt and even hatred for Mary Immaculate. Blasphemies of those who directly insult her in her sacred statues and images. Our Lady s words to Sister Lucia: I promise at the hour of death to help with the graces needed for their salvation, whoever on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months, shall confess and receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the rosary with the intention of making reparation to me. It is a great way to start your Saturday!
