3 News from the P.I.T. Priest in Training Whoever finds his life will lose it and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (Matthew 10:39). This paradox offered to us by Christ is hard for us to grasp by reason, yet it s something we know all too deeply well by our own experiences! When we live for ourselves and our pleasures, we always seem to walk away unhappy and unsatisfied. It s like a thirst we can never quench, and in most cases, that pursuit to live for ourselves and our selfish pleasures leads us down a down a path of destruction and isolation. Hence, he who finds [keeps] his life will lose it. Think of the experiences we can recount of this reality! From our family, loved ones, or even ourselves, that are falling or have fallen to destructive behaviors and addictions. We can probably account some serious ones like sex, drugs, and alcohol. But let s not forget the smaller addictions that can drive us away from one another and isolation; like the amount of time we spend in front of the TV, computer, phones, video games, etc. We know that when we live for ourselves, we truly lose our life! Why is this? The answer is in the way God created us! We were made, in the image and likeness of God, to be a self-gift. Someone who lays down their life for others just as Christ laid down his life for us! It s when we give our life away in relationship, which involves hard and difficult sacrifices, it is there we will find joy and life. It s in the cross founded on love, that allows us to experience the resurrection of new life. Hence, whoever loses his life for my sake will find it! So, the challenge for us this weekend is to reaffirm the need to act selflessly, not selfishly; to put others before ourselves. This will surely can be a cross and one that will have us lose our life, but as Christ revealed and we know by our own experiences, it will be the only way we can truly find our life! Fr. Michael Kearney PARISH BUSINESS Rectory Office Closed The Rectory Business Office will be closed on Monday, July 3, and Tuesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. The morning Mass on Tuesday, July 4 will be celebrated at 9:00.. LifeSource Blood Drive Success Thanks to all who participated in the LifeSource Blood Drive on June 18. The blood gathered will touch up to 93 lives. We appreciate your support. Fr. McDonald Council #1911 A Prayer for Our Nation Almighty God, you have given us this good land as our heritage. Bless our land Save us from violence and from every evil way. Defend our liberties Endow with the Spirit of wisdom those to whom in your name we entrust the authority of government In time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble do not allow our trust in you to fail. 5 FAITH FORMATION On Fire with the Holy Spirit? You have not given yourself faith as you have not given yourself life. The believer has received faith from others and should hand it on to others. Our love for Jesus and for our neighbor impels us to speak to others about our faith. Each believer is thus a link in the great chain of believers. I cannot believe without being carried by the faith of others, and by my faith I help support others in the faith. (Catechism #166) Come share your zeal for God with the children of the Religious Education program. We are in need of catechists and aides at every grade level. Classes go from September to May and there are three sessions to choose from: Sundays 10:30 11:45.., Wednesdays 4:30 5:45.., and Wednesdays 6:30 7:45.. If you would like to share the faith with the youth of our parish please contact Matt Pozen, Faith Formation Director, ext. 502 or matt.pozen@visitationcc.org. Please contact ASAP as we are planning for the fall. TOTUS TUUS Coming to Visitation July 23-28! Totus Tuus is a diocesan-sponsored summer faith camp (like vacation Bible school). Teams of four college students (two male and two female) travel to various parishes of the diocese proclaiming the Gospel to children and teens through catechetical instruction, Mass, games, fun and more! Children Entering Grades 1 6 Monday Friday, July 24-28, 9:00.. 2:30.. Cost: $25 (Family Rate: $70 for 3 or more kids) Children must bring a bagged lunch and drink daily. Teens Entering Grades 7-12 Sunday Thursday, July 23-27, 7:00 9:00.. Cost: $10 per teen To register please contact Matt Pozen at: matt.pozen@visitationcc.org or (630) ext HELP NEEDED hosting the Totus Tuus team! We need one family to host the two girls on the Totus Tuus team, and another family to host the two boys. This would involve providing a room with two beds, use of a bathroom, and having breakfast available each morning before the team members head to the parish for the day. We also need some families to provide lunch or dinner for the team during the six days that they are here at Visitation. Lunch (12:00 1:00..) needs to be brought to the Parish Center. For dinner (5:15 6:30..), families may bring the food to the Parish Center and join the team there, they may host them at their home, or they may take the team out to a restaurant. This is a great way to support the Totus Tuus program and these young men and women in their journey of faith. The team members love meeting families from the parish! Please contact Matt Pozen if you can help. Page 5 SCHOOL Visitation Catholic School offers $1,500 off Tuition to Transfer Students Visitation Catholic School is pleased to offer a tuition transfer grant to any parishioner who transfers their child into grades 1-7 from any private*, public, charter or home school. 6 Brian E. Wagner Scholarship Fund Asst. to President, Marisol Zamar Phone: (310) BEWSF Scholarship Awarded to Five College Bound Seniors The BEWSF (Brian E. Wagner Scholarship Fund) proudly celebrated their 7 th year of operation by awarding five scholarships to high school seniors from the Elmhurst area. This year s awardees embody the most endearing qualities of Brian s life. The BEWSF s mission is to encourage high school students to serve as leaders in their community by exercising sound judgment and committing themselves to volunteer programs that make a positive impact in their lives and the lives of others. Brian Edwin Wagner s untimely passing in 1993 at the age of 16 was inspired the inception of the organization. His memory is carried on through the recipients of this scholarship program. Liam Hill (York High School) will attend the University of Alabama. He affirmed, I am so grateful and blessed to be a recipient of this Brian E. Wagner Scholarship. I think that this scholarship is an awesome way to honor and commemorate a truly incredible person! From what I have learned about Brian, he was a person that lived life to the fullest, put family first and was a natural leader. He touched the lives of so many people at such a young age. I hope that I can honor Brian's life by emulating his example. John Carey (York High School) was accepted to St. Louis University. John said, I am very thankful and honored to have received this award. As I pursue my doctorate is Physical Therapy I hope to carry on Brian's legacy of leadership through my studies in college. I will practice and refine my leadership skills on and off the field through my participation in ultimate Frisbee and as a member of my university s band. Vanessa Lococo (York High School) is enrolled at Grand Valley State University. She expressed, The BEWSF award reminds me that hard work always pays off in the end. Brian Wagner brought a smile to everyone's face. During the next four years and throughout my nursing career, I know I can bring a smile to everyone s face because of the compassion and kindness I show towards others. I hope that one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals. Keegan Costello (Fenwick High School) will be majoring in Finance or Accounting and joining different business clubs while at the University of Illinois. Keegan stated, Receiving the Brian Wagner scholarship is a great honor and I intend to continue living my life with the same attributes that helped Brian Wagner become a successful leader. Those are traits I try to resemble in my own life. I hope that I can continue to serve as a leader in my community and continue to pass the torch that is the Brain Wagner legacy. Emily Gifford (Timothy Chr istian High School) looks forwar d to beginning her college exper ience at Tr inity International University. She will be studying psychology, playing softball, and participating in the Emerging Leaders program. Emily commented, Receiving this scholarship is an absolute honor because I get to represent Brian s memory and what he stood for. He was a man of integrity who always went the extra mile and led by example. In my life, I will continue to take initiative to encourage others.
