3 News from the P.I.T. Priest in Training In a world built from productivity, we forget that the Lord created us not to work and live our own lives, but to be with God and to rest with Him. This is revealed in the Creation story found in Genesis. God created man, male and female in His own image and likeness on the sixth day, and then God rested on the seventh day. God rested, not because He was tired, but because he wanted to be with us! This is God s desire, to enter our hearts and be with us! This weekend we are promoting our Eucharist Perpetual Adoration Chapel. It is the oldest adoration chapel in the Diocese of Joliet almost 20 years. It is open to the public from 6:00.. to 10:00.., and we have scheduled adorers who are responsible for covering the overnight hours. We are able to have the adoration chapel because individuals are covering each hour of the day, seven days of the week. We are currently looking for individuals, families, or groups to volunteer for open hours and to supplement the already filled schedule. It is in adoration we can rest with the Lord and in silence. Every day we surround ourselves in noise and the busy-ness of life. I, personally, wake up to music, watch news clips, jump into my life of ministry, and find myself ending my day by turning the television on to find more noise. And yet, it is in adoration I find myself bringing everything to the Lord in conversation. I bring the Lord my day, my struggles, my fears, my desires, and so much more. If there is one thing I could encourage you to do outside of attending Mass, it would be to spend time with the Lord in adoration! Even if you can t sign up for an actual assigned hour with a friend or family, please don t hesitate to visit the Lord in our Adoration Chapel. We were made to rest with Him and He waits for us in our Adoration Chapel. Fr. Michael Kearney A Note From Sr. Thomas Leo I just wanted to say thank you for the outpouring of notes and cards that I received in Adrian over the holidays. I enjoyed hearing from everyone and reading the cards over Christmas. Thank you again. Best wishes for a healthy and blessed Sr. Thomas Leo Monahan O.P. Rectory Office Closed Presidents Day Monday, February 20 The Rectory Office will bel closed Monday, February 20, in observance of Presidents Day. We will return on Tuesday, February 21, at 8:30.. PARISH BUSINESS Page 3 Please Reflect on God s Gifts to You! Your Gift Makes a Difference! This week, you are asked to review the 2017 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) Opening Report that are on the small tables at the Church entrances today. The CMAA is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a onetime gift or pledge your gift over 10 months to support the good works of the Diocese. A gift to the CMAA will touch the lives of many in our Diocese in a positive way. Each gift makes a difference! Together, the gifts of many enable our Diocese to deliver needed education, ministry and services to those who need it most. As you take the time to review the Opening Report and see all the work enabled by the CMAA, please reflect on God s gifts to you. We are all Held in God s Hands and he has given you all that you have. We can give thanks to Him for our blessings through a gift to the CMAA. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who have not received the mailing, we will conduct our Commitment/In-Pew Weekend process at all Masses next weekend. After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $124, in paid pledges, 70% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. E-giving Is It Time For You To Sign Up? Simply go to and click on E-giving. You will be linked to the E-giving site. The website will walk you through sign-up. Important things to know when you sign up: 1. You can make changes to your E-giving account at any time and those changes will be effective with your next cycle of contributions. 2. Please indicate your envelope number. 3. When you E-give for special collections, you must select the one-time button at the bottom of the screen. You cannot combine one-time contributions with regularly scheduled Sunday contributions. Recurring Sunday contributions must be entered separately. 4. Anyone who donates by E-giving still receives collection envelopes to drop in the collection basket during Mass. A small box is printed on the envelope to indicate electronic donations. 6 For the past few weeks in our discussion of the Gospels, we have noticed that central to the message of Jesus was his proclamation of the coming kingdom of God. This was not essentially a message about how to go to heaven when we die, but rather about God coming in power to transform this world. This message built upon the apocalyptic hopes of the Jewish people in the two centuries leading up to the time of Jesus. We can see this apocalyptic message of Jesus most clearly in his famous Apocalyptic Discourse, as recorded in Mark 13, Matthew 24, and Luke 21. Jesus gives this discourse soon after arriving in Jerusalem with his disciples. Let s take a closer look at the Apocalyptic Discourse, as recorded in Mark 13. The disciples point out to Jesus the beauty of the great temple in the city, and he uses this as a launching pad for talking about the ultimate future: Do you see these great buildings? There will not be one stone left upon another that will not be thrown down. The disciples ask him when this great destruction will happen, and he replies: Nation will rise against nation there will be earthquakes and famines but these are but the beginning of the labor pains...for the gospel must first be preached to all nations. He then warns the disciples that they will be handed over by family members, beaten in the synagogues, brought before courts and governors, and hated by all because of the name of Jesus, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. Jesus points to a mysterious sign of the end-times: the desolating abomination standing where it should not. This is a reference to Daniel 9:27 from the Old Testament, when the FAITH FORMATION Faith Matt-ers By Matt Pozen Director of Parish Faith Formation The Last Things: Death, Judgment, and Eternal Life Greek ruler Antiochus IV desecrated the Jerusalem temple in 167 BC by erecting a statue of Zeus there. Jesus continues about the end-times: Those times will have tribulation such as has not been since the beginning of God s creation. He then says: The sun will be darkened, the stars will fall from the sky, and they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory He will send out the angels and gather his elect from the ends of the earth. Earlier in the discourse Jesus said that the end would not come until the gospel had first been preached to all nations, seeming to imply an extended era of the church. But at this point Jesus seems to imply a more immanent end: Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Jesus then ends the discourse by warning: Of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father So be watchful and alert, for you do not know when the time will come. What do we make of this Apocalyptic Discourse of Jesus at the end of his public ministry? Instead of talking about his immanent passion, death, and resurrection, he focuses on the great turning of the ages that became a popular theme in some Jewish circles during the two centuries leading up to the time of Jesus. Was he mistaken in believing that the end times would occur during his own generation? Or should we emphasize more his statement that the gospel must first be preached to all nations? One thing is for certain, Jesus saw his own suffering, death, and resurrection as the pivotal moment in the great drama of God s transformation of creation. We ll explore this further next week. On February 21, we celebrate the feast day of St. Peter Damian. St. Peter Damian had a great love for the Eucharist and in fact was a witness to an awesome Eucharistic miracle. St. Peter Damian describes this miracle as follows: This is a Eucharistic event of great importance. It took place in Giving in to a horrible temptation, a woman was about to take the Eucharistic Bread home to use the Sacred Species for sorcery. But a priest noticed what she had done and ran after her, taking away from her the Host she had sacrilegiously stolen. Then he unfolded the white linen cloth in which the sacred Host had been wrapped and found that the Host had been transformed in such a way that Half had become visibly the Body of Christ, while the other Half preserved the normal look of a Host. With such a clear testimony, God wanted to win over unbelievers and heretics who refused to accept the Real Presence of the Eucharistic mystery: in one half of the consecrated bread the Body of Christ was visible, while in the other the natural form, thus highlighting the reality of the sacramental transubstantiation taking place at the Consecration. ( english_pdf/damian-scala.pdf) You, too, can witness a Eucharistic miracle by visiting the Adoration Chapel and adoring the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. What a blessing it is for all of us to be able to be with Jesus any day of the week or any hour of the day. If you would like your own holy hour with Jesus, please contact Mary Lewis or Joan Taylor VISITATION PARISH GROUPS Vis Seniors Join us on Thursday, February 23, at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Center for some fun and entertainment. 8 Bishop R. Barron Word on Fire Series Pivotal Players Bishop Barron s Pivotal Players is a multi-part film series that illumines a group of saints, artists, mystics and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization. We will study the lives and times of these six pivotal players, who shaped the world we live in today. In these sessions Bishop Barron skillfully unlocks the truth behind the Catholic Church s most influential people. These men and women who knew and loved Jesus Christ, through their lives made distinct by their relationship to Him, introduced Him to the world. From St. Frances of Assisi to St. Catherine of Siena, from St. Thomas Aquinas to Michelangelo, all the way to Blessed John Henry Newman and G.K. Chesterton, Christ s Incarnation was on display. Each session will consist of viewing the DVD presentation by Bishop Barron on one of six pivotal players, followed by a discussion based on statements and questions in the study guide prepared by Bishop Barron s staff. If a person wishes to attend all or most of these sessions, the study guide would be important, not only to take part in the discussion, but to preserve the important information on these persons permanently. However if only one or two sessions will be attended, a handbook would not be necessary. These study sessions will take place on Wednesdays in the Hospitality Room, Visitation Parish Center, 12:30 2:30.. The first session will be on February 15. At the conclusion of the six week study, the first two sessions will be repeated for the convenience of those who were not able to participate from the beginning of the series.
