3 First Sunday of Lent NEWS FROM THE P.I.T. PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney I constantly battle with my own human brokenness with suffering and sacrifice. he battle is I don t want to suffer and I clearly T don t want to make any sacrifices. I just want pleasure and comfort. Yet what is clear in life, and more importantly revealed in our faith, is that it is only through death we have new life! It is only sacrifice, we have relationship. It is in the destruction of the flood, that Noah is given new life on earth. It is only in Christ s Death, that we are able to enjoy and participate in the Resurrection. Do we not see this parallel in our relationships of family and friends? If we are not willing to make sacrifices what kind of family or friendship do we really have?! And yet, the question needs to be asked, what sacrifices are you making for the Lord this Lenten season? Have we decided to challenge ourselves or have we dismissed the need to sacrifice anything? It s always okay to re-evaluate and re-start our Lenten sacrifices and I would encourage you, and myself, to make strides to make sacrifices for the Lord! For if we if enter into the Lenten Season with sacrifice and penance, we will be able to truly celebrate Easter Sunday and our new life in Christ. LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60 th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. 4 Page Four February 18, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT LIVING the WORD February 18, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: FLOODS BELOW, RAINBOWS ABOVE The theme of safe passage through destructive waters to a place of life and hope pervades our understanding of this baptismal season of Lent. FIRST READING God's covenant with Noah when he was delivered from the flood (Genesis 9:8-15). God had punished humanity for their sinfulness by sending a flood that destroyed everything that lived (with the exception of Noah, his family, and the animals on the ark). After the flood receded, Noah and his family opened the ark and stepped onto dry land. The first thing they did was offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the LORD. This greatly pleased God. God, on his part, made a covenant with Noah and with all creatures that he would never destroy the world again with a flood. He did not make this pact with them because they were so good, for in a passage that immediately precedes this reading, God admits that human hearts are corrupt from their birth. Rather, he made this promise as an act of mercy. Finally, God gave the rainbow as a reminder of all who would see it of this covenant that he would uphold forever. SECOND READING The water of the flood prefigured baptism, which saves you now (1 Peter 3:18-22). Baptism is seen as a washing to remove the contagion of sin (and not the cleansing from physical dirtiness). The ark that saved Noah from the flood is a type of prefiguring of the Sacrament of Baptism (for in Baptism we are saved from the flood of sin and lies that surround us). The verse that speaks about Jesus preaching to those who were in prison seems to be a reference to the belief that, rafter Jesus died on the cross, he descended down into the underworld (sometimes called hell or hades or Sheol). He did this in order to proclaim his message of salvation to those who had died before he was born. GOSPEL This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:12-15). The account of the temptation in the desert in the Gospel of Mark is the simplest of the three Synoptic versions. There is no mention of the three separate temptations as there is in Luke and Matthew. All we are told is that Jesus was tempted for forty days. The kingdom of God (or more accurately, the reign of God) will be manifested when people turn their hearts to the Lord. This is why we repent during Lent: to allow God (and not other things) to be at the center of our lives. REFLECTION We may all have seen a beautiful double rainbow break through dark storm clouds. Seeing that rainbow can comfort us. It makes us aware of the nearness of God. Rainbows remind us to look for the calm after a storm and find God near. God promised: When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings (Genesis 9:14-15a). The rainbow reminds God, and us, of that promise. In Baptism we enter into a relationship with God. In Baptism we put to death whatever is not of God, the flesh in St. Paul. In Baptism we promise to live by the Spirit. Lent is a rainbow of renewal, wherein God reminds us of the promise never again to destroy all mortal beings. During Lent we enter the desert with Jesus to hear him say to us: This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel (Mark 1:15). Repent! Reflect on the floodwaters of sin that keep you from believing God is here. Repent! Renew your Baptismal promise to live Jesus. Repent! Name your storms that cloud over God s unconditional, merciful love. Ask Jesus for help to find the rainbows of forgiveness and new life that often follow those storms. Our example will give hope to those preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil. St. Francis de Sales taught that life happens. Whatever happens, God is with us. Look for God s rainbows that proclaim: God is here! God will not destroy you! Repent! Turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel. 6 Page Six February 18, 2018 PERPETUAL ADORATION In our busy world, sometimes the most difficult one of these three Lenten practices is to find time for prayer... Lent is a season of preparing our hearts and souls through praying, fasting (self-denial) and almsgiving for the glorious day of Jesus Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Jesus, the Son of God, prayed to His Heavenly Father. Often times, He prayed in places where He was away from distractions. Jesus is waiting for you in that place of no distractions, that place of peaceful solitude. This Lenten season, come join Jesus in a restful and quiet place the Adoration Chapel. Spending some relaxing prayerful time with Jesus will bring you closer to Him and make this Lenten season more meaningful and spiritually uplifting. Jesus is calling to you, So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? (Matthew 26:40). Call Mary Lewis, , or Joan Taylor, , to inquire about your special hour with Jesus. Prayer Quilt Request The Prayer Quilt Ministry is in need of three portable, in good working condition sewing machines. We have three new quilters who do not have machines. If you have one you are no longer using, please consider donating it to the ministry.
