1 VISITATION CATHOLIC CHURCH ELMHURST, IL SEPTEMBER 9, 2018

2 Page Two September 9, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church One of the beautiful traditions of our Catholic Church is the use of bells to indicate that something special is about to begin New Sacristy Bells! STARTING NEXT WEEK, you will hear the sound of our new Sacristy bells in our church prior to the start of the Holy Mass. These bells (which will be located at both the Sacristy and main entrance to our church) will be rung once to signal the congregation to stand for the Processional. Please rise once you hear the sound of these bells. THANK YOU! 3 Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 9, 2018 Page Three STATEMENT FROM MOST REVEREND R. DANIEL CONLON, BISHOP OF JOLIET I OFFER MY STRONG SUPPORT FOR THE DECISION MADE BY CARDINAL DANIEL DINARDO, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, to seek an Apostolic Visitation, working in concert with a national lay commission granted independent authority, to seek the truth with regard to the matter of Archbishop McCarrick. This scandal needs to be thoroughly investigated and brought into the light. I also support Cardinal DiNardo s intention to seek the Holy Father s concurrence with the plan of the USCCB s Executive Committee to develop proposals concerning the reporting, investigation and resolution of child abuse complaints against bishops. PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney Who you choose to accompany yourself with or not to accompany yourself with matters? T his question seems simple enough, but is crucial to comprehend. This decision makes sense at work, with our friends, but most importantly in our spiritual lives! T hat s clear in our first Sunday reading from Isaiah: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God. Why is Israel called to have strength and no fear? Because the Lord is with them! It is true, if we keep the Lord by our side, it doesn t matter what storms or crosses we may face, we can grab strength and courage from the Lord s Presence. I have experienced this in my ministry and in my personal life. I have witnessed individuals facing the end of their life who possess total peace because they knew the Lord was with them! I have personally experienced this when I was diagnosed with Hodgkin s Lymphoma I had a sense of peace because I knew the Lord was with me! The challenge for us, is to ask the question (s): Do we walk with the Lord? Do we allow the Lord into our hearts and lives? Do we have strength and courage that is asked of us in our first reading? If not, maybe we should invite the Lord in!

4 Page Four September 9, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD September 9, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: BE HEALED, BE OPEN Divine healing in the scriptures never exists for its own sake, but as an impetus to proclaim God s glory. When we experience healing, our lives must be opened to be faithful witnesses. FIRST READING Be strong, fear not! Here is your God (Isaiah 35:4-7a). After Israel had been chastised for all of its sins, it would be blessed by the LORD and be made fruitful again. This idea is presented in terms of the blind being able to see and the deaf able to hear and the mute able to speak. We will find this theme in this Sunday s Gospel, where we will see Jesus heal the man who was deaf and mute. SECOND READING Show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ (James 2:1-5). This passage is scathing in its attack on favoritism within the community toward those who are rich. It reminds its readers that Jesus did not judge people this way. Jesus, in fact, saw the poor as those who are truly blessed, while he condemned the rich and arrogant. The rich are not ready to listen to the good news because they feel as if they do not need it, while the poor realize that they have nothing to lose. In fact, they recognize that they desperately need Jesus saving message because they have nowhere else to turn. GOSPEL Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak (Mark 7:31-37). Jesus healing the man who is mute is in stark contrast to the Gospel last week, which spoke of the Pharisees who could physically hear and speak, but they chose to make themselves spiritually blind and deaf and mute. The man in the Gospel this week, however, was physically deaf and mute, and Jesus gives him the freedom to hear and speak freely. Typical of Mark s Gospel, after Jesus heals the man, he tells him not to spread word of what had happened (lest people misinterpret his mission in terms of power). Yet the people are filled with awe and spread the news everywhere. In our Baptism ceremonies, we still use this idea of opening our ears to hear God s words and our mouths to speak them. REFLECTION How are ears opened and mouths freed? There was a deaf woman who worked at a post office. At her window was a sign inviting customers to speak so she could read their lips. There was a note pad, in case someone needed to write to communicate. When customers would sign to her she would light up and share her thank you. Her ears were opened and others learned to speak. At a campus ministry gathering to watch a film on immigration, the participants stayed for pizza to discuss their reactions. Discussed there was the importance of meeting people and hearing their stories to open eyes and ears. It was noted that often it is personal connection that makes a difference in what and how we hear, and what and for whom we speak. Ears are opened. We learn to explore how to speak to quench fear and embolden strength, and to see all people as brothers and sisters and children of God. St. James letter is needed as much today as it was at his writing: show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ (2:1). Jesus made clear God s desire to heal, free, and reconcile all creation. Sign language, open dialogue, hearing our brothers and sisters, and voicing our own fears and concerns can touch human ears, free tongues, and open hearts as surely as did spit and Jesus command, Ephphatha! Be opened. Then our ears are opened and our mouths free, which is what we ask at baptism: May [the Lord] soon touch your ears to receive his word, and your mouth to proclaim his faith, to the praise and glory of God the Father. (Rite of Baptism for Children, #65). 6 Page Six September 9, 2018 OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES What does the Holy Eucharist mean to you? Students throughout the Diocese of Joliet Catholic Schools have been spending hours before the Blessed Sacrament during the school day. They are learning and experiencing first hand what wonderful gifts Jesus in the Holy Eucharist has to offer them and their families. The students also learned about the numerous Eucharistic miracles that occurred throughout the world. These students were asked, What does the Holy Eucharist mean to you? Their remarks were inspirational! The following is a Sixth grade student s thoughts about the Holy Eucharist: Visitation Catholic Church PICK UP YOUR FREE BOOK TODAY... 9 Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 9, 2018 Page Nine Get Excited about the Catholic Faith! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults A STUDY ON THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF ST. TERESA OF AVILA Begins Thursday, Sept. 13 through mid-november Two session times: 9:00 am and 7:00 pm Visitation Parish Center All women of the parish are invited At the heart of this study is the passionate, unrelenting love of St. Teresa of Avila, the famous 16th century Spanish nun who became the first female Doctor of the Church. With her feminine heart and deep spiritual wisdom, St. Teresa helps us embark on the spiritual journey that takes place within our souls by guiding us through what she coined "The Interior Castle," where Christ abides in the center of our being. Her profound insight, leads to a deepened relationship with Jesus, empowering us to become pioneers forging our way with love through the new and often challenging frontiers we face in life. Endow is a Catholic educational program that brings women together to discover our God-given dignity and feminine genius through the richness and authenticity of Catholic teaching, and to understand our unique role we have in bringing our culture back to focus on humanity and transforming society. When we as women grow in understanding the teachings of the Church and in the truth of Jesus Christ, our faith becomes more fully defined, and so does our transforming influence in the family, the community, and society as a whole.
