We are blessed to be in a parish like Visitation that always gives of their Time, Talent, and Treasure. There are too many people to thank that put their heart and soul into volunteering every month to host the Pancake Breakfast and Pizza Events to achieve our goal of meeting the $20,000 needed to purchase an ultrasound machine for Caring Network. 70% of women who see an ultrasound of their baby will choose life. Through this gift of a new 3D ultrasound with its latest technology, you have helped to save tens of thousands of babies for years to come. Amazing! But it would not be possible without you and the help of the Holy Spirit to move our parish to take action. We are forever grateful for the generosity of the many parish individuals and families who donated to help the cause and to promote a culture of life in DuPage County. God bless you and kisses to those babies and children: our greatest gifts. As you know, the CMAA supports 30 ministries that benefit every parish in the diocese, including ours, and are Signs of Hope to our brothers and sisters most in need. Our parish s goal for the 2019 CMAA is $138,100. Please remember that 70% of any amount we raise over goal is returned to us for our use. This is a great opportunity for our parish! By Father Michael Kearney The story of the Magi is one that is meant to be replicated in our own lives... T he Magi, were men searching for God, specifically in creation and in the world. They had a longing to find the One their hearts were made for. Moved by a sign, the Magi journeyed on, seeking and traveling long distances. After inquiring in Jerusalem to chief priests and scribes (knowing they didn t have all the answers for their discovery) they traveled on to Bethlehem where they found the infant with his mother. Falling in homage, they offered their gifts. They were transformed and went back home in a different direction! We, too, have longings in our heart. We, too, are seeking for God in our life! W e are moved, traveling to Church to hear about our Lord and receive our God in the Eucharist. During and after Communion, we find ourselves on our knees giving homage to our God, and bringing our gifts which is our very lives. I hope, as we continue through this Christmas season, that we come to have a deep encounter with our Lord, only to have our lives changed and we return home another way: a life transformed by Christ. 4 Page Four January 6, 2019 Scripture Reflections for THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD LIVING the WORD January 6, 2019 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: A RENEWED EPIPHANY We are tempted to think of Epiphany as a single day for celebrating the arrival of the Magi. Yet, every day, in our own lives, we are offered the opportunity to behold and reveal the God-appearing that is Epiphany. FIRST READING Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The Lord shines upon you (Isaiah 60:1-6). This was written shortly after the Jews returned from exile in Babylon (c. 539 BC). We hear that God would still fulfill the promises found in Second Isaiah (chaps ). The glory of God would be upon Israel to such an extent that even the Gentile peoples would come in pilgrimage to Jerusalem to pay homage to the LORD. No longer would the pagans carry the Israelites off into exile. Now the pagans would bring their riches and submit themselves to the God of Israel. This promise would be fulfilled with the arrival of the Magi. SECOND READING The Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). In the Old Covenant, only the Jewish people received the promise. They were the chosen people and heirs of the promises that God had made to the patriarchs and the prophets of Israel. In the New Covenant all peoples will participate in the grace of the Lord. There will be no distinction between Jew and Greek, slave or free, male or female. They are all chosen by the Lord. All will participate in the promise of the Gospel. They all are part of the Visitation Catholic Church body of Christ, which is the Church. This is the mystery of salvation: the bounty of God s love for all people. GOSPEL READING Magi from the east arrived, looking for the newborn king of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-12). The feast of the Epiphany celebrates the arrival of the Magi to pay homage to baby Jesus. Epiphany means manifestation, for we are commemorating the day when the glory of God s Messiah was made manifest to the pagans (in the person of the Magi). Magi were astrologers. They were not kings (although that title is often used for them) nor does it say that there were three (that is the number of gifts). The account speaks of them coming from the east (possibly Persia or Babylon). It is possible that the star that they saw was the elision of three planets: Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, which occurred around 7 BC. The technical name for this type of elision is syzygy. The Magi would naturally have gone to Jerusalem to inquire about the birth of a Jewish king. Herod intends to use them to murder what he considers to be a rival to this throne. From many sources we know that Herod was a murderous paranoid when it came to his throne. He murdered a wife, three sons, and a brotherin-law, who was the high priest. Jewish scholars used a passage taken from Micah to determine that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem. The Magi bring gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They would have brought these products because they were easy to carry and valuable. Later authors found symbolic meaning in these gifts. They spoke of gold as a gift one would give a king, frankincense as an incense one would burn to honor a god, and myrrh as an ointment used in burials, foretelling how Jesus would save us from our sins. REFLECTION Isaiah addresses people who experienced darkness covering the earth. Many in our day would say our day is similar: fires, hurricanes, racial/ethical division, increasing talk about nuclear arms, terrorist acts, exploding cases of sexual misconduct, and more. Yet, we celebrate that the light has come to lessen the darkness we experience by turning on the light of Christ. Herod fed fear and slaughtered the innocents. Christ feeds hope. His birth in Bethlehem, the least among the rulers of Judah, signals hope. Nothing is small in the service of God. Turn to Christ. Follow his star. Let his light dispel your darkness. Shine with and find his light in all situations. 6 Page Six January 6, 2019 Never Fear a Partner is Near Visitation Catholic Church CATHOLIC SCRIPTURE STUDY PRESENTS We happen to have the best Adorers around! T hey show up on time and stay the full hour or longer. They cover for each other (if they have a partner), get their own substitutes, or notify the Adoration Committee for help because they love Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and wouldn t think of leaving Him alone. Currently, every hour of the week has a Registered Adorer but tomorrow that could change. The schedule is very unpredictable. Many of the 168 hours in the week are covered by more than one person. There are still 38 hours that need partners. A few Adorers couldn t commit to Adoration every week but registered knowing that with other Adorers present during their same time slot, there would always be someone with Jesus. That s a PARTNERSHIP. When the snowbirds leave for the winter, if they have a partner, there is always someone ready to step up and fill the needed hour. When the snow birds return and the younger families take off for the summer, the Chapel is always covered. When an Adorer becomes ill, has an emergency, or needs to be out of town for a few days they need not fear. In just the last few weeks, SIX Adorers have stepped forward to help build the PARTNERSHIP. Help us with the Campaign of Love for Jesus as we try to keep the Chapel open and functioning well. With your help, we need never fear. We need YOU! The following hours have a single adorer. Our goal is to have at least TWO Adorers for every hour. Please consider signing up to spend one hour a week with Jesus! Pick an empty hour/hour with a single adorer/any hour that would fit your schedule! Jan. 9, 9, 12:30 12:30 PM PM to to 2:30 2:30 PM PM Hospitality Hospitality Room Room of of the the Parish Parish Center Center Hebrews is a masterfully written biblical work with a fascinating premise: the New Covenant of Jesus Christ perfectly fulfills the Old Covenant. Even more impressive, however, is the fact that only the New Covenant can free us from sin. The news was so shocking, so radical, that it literally shook the world, beginning with the earthquake at Calvary and thundering down to us, 2,000 years later. This DVD study with Scott Hahn, Mark Shea and Fr. Mitch Pacwa takes us through this theological piercing letter. In the powerful lessons of this 16-week DVD series, you will learn: Why the New Covenant fulfills, without destroying, the Old. How Jesus relates to and far surpasses the angels. What it means to be a priest in the line of Melchizedek. How the first Christians made crushing sacrifices to guard and preserve our Faith. Study Guides (although not required) enhance the understanding of each session are available for $30. I am inviting you to make a women s CRHP weekend. It is worth the time away from family and friends to really renew that relationship with Jesus. I attended a Catholic grammar school and high school and felt I was a good Catholic. Last winter I noticed a similar invitation in the Visitation Voice advertising the CRHP Weekend for Women and since I was in a spiritual slump and was free on that weekend, I took a chance and attended. It was better than I expected, and not only have I grown closer to the Lord but have made some wonderful new friends. With the help of Our Dear Lord and my new friends I am learning to be my best self. I also realized I was not always making choices that were leading me to heaven. Don t ignore His call!
