By Father Michael Kearney I don t know about you, but after hearing the First Reading from the Book of Job on this Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time, I feel like I need a pick-me-up ob said the following: J Is not man s life on earth a drudgery? I have been assigned months of misery. Night drags on I shall not see happiness again. Okay Debbie Downer! Job s story is an intense one. Yet it can reveal so much about our own response to human suffering. For one, Job s life doesn t end in suffering and drudgery. His life ends richly blessed by God once again. He was so caught up in his suffering and misery, he couldn t see any hope in his suffering. How many times when we suffer, we can feel like Job? Oh the world is collapsing and or, no one understands what I m going through? Yet, that is not true. Each and everyone of us has experienced difficulty and struggles with relationships, job, health, loss of a loved one, etc. We know sometimes all too well the reality of crushing aspects of life. Yet, are we to be like Job without hope? That s where the life of Christ changes everything. Christ s life, death, and resurrection will forever change how we view suffering. We know for certain that we have a God not distant in our suffering and death, even though we may feel differently! We have a God who is willing to walk into our suffering and death, transform it into eternal life with Him. o the next time we encounter some intense S suffering and feel like Job, instead of despairing, I d encourage all of us to just look at Christ on the Cross. A sign of true hope, that even in the midst of suffering, we know the story doesn t end in death and sadness, but with the resurrection and joy! VISITATION ROSARY MAKERS This Weekend February 3 and 4 Come see our Knights of Columbus rosaries, Irish rosaries, and Divine Mercy Chaplets. We are now accepting orders for St. Patrick Irish rosaries, Divine Mercy Chaplets, First Holy Communion rosaries and Confirmation rosaries. All special orders are welcome

4 Page Four February 4, 2018 Scripture Reflections for FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD February 4, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: WISING UP The trials of Job led him to an even deeper insight into the ways and the wisdom of God. When life presents us with difficulties, we also can step back in faith, and search more deeply into God s will. FIRST READING Job experienced months of misery and troubled nights (Job 7:1-4, 6-7). There is an interesting contrast between the message of the First Reading and that of the Gospel. This reading emphasizes the futility and frustration of human life. It is short; it passes as quickly as a spool that flies from one end to another of a weaver s shuttle. Likewise, it is filled with woe (e.g., months of misery and troubled nights). Remember, these are Job s reflections after he has lost everything that he had and was scraping sores off his body while sitting on a dunghill. The Gospel presents the response to this reading: Jesus. When he comes into our lives we find healing. SECOND READING I have become all things to all, to save at least some (1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23). Saint Paul was writing to some who insisted upon their rights and were only concerned with what they could get out of life. Paul responds by speaking of the greatest reward he received in his ministry to share the message of God free of charge. The reward for doing good deeds is the possibility of doing good deeds. God has given us the opportunity to share our talents and love with others. Our greatest fulfillment lies in giving ourselves to others, for that is when we are most like God. Paul also speaks of how he tried to act in a way that would not prove a hindrance to the acceptance of the Gospel message. Visitation Catholic Church GOSPEL Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases (Mark 1:29-39). We hear about the healing of Peter s mother-in-law. What is very interesting about this account is that she is one of the few people who receives a miracle in this Gospel and responds in an appropriate manner. Instead of drawing attention to herself, she responds to Jesus gracious action by service. When Jesus healed many in the village, he refused to allow the demons to speak because they knew him. They would have proclaimed that Jesus was the Messiah, and Jesus knew that the crowd would have misunderstood his role. He did not intend to be seen as a political leader or a miracle worker. He was there to heal hearts and to call people to conversion. He was not the Messiah whom they wanted, but rather he was the Messiah they needed. This is why, after he had prayed in the deserted spot for a while, he goes to the other villages in the area to proclaim the Word of God. REFLECTION Have you ever felt hopeless, like Job? Yet Job continued turning to God, even when he felt he would not see happiness again. Jesus spent himself healing and teaching people as we see in this week s Gospel. Yet he turned to God, too. He took time to pray, and felt free not to feel forced into service when he heard, Everyone is looking for you. Prayer strengthened him to move on and continue his mission to preach and manifest God s presence in his works. Job and Jesus found freedom in their relationship with God. Job did not give up on God, even though God seemed absent. Jesus remained faithful to his mission, even when people wanted him to remain with them. Paul s relationship with God freed him to preach the Gospel by becoming all things to all people. Centered in his relationship with Jesus, Paul discovered how to live Jesus in every situation he encountered. We need not rise early in the morning to pray, as Jesus did. Some of us are night people. But we do need to make time for prayer. Even a short amount of time goes a long way. There we find that God is present in our midst. There we can discover true freedom, as Job, Paul, and Jesus did. To pray is to speak to God and listen for God s voice in order to breathe as one with God, according to St. Francis de Sales. So, take a deep breath. There is God. Exhale. Release anxiety, hopelessness, or a feeling of pressure. Repeat. Breathe deeply and be centered in the One who is the source of our freedom, who gives us hope, and empowers us to respond to every situation we meet in our lives. 6 Page Six February 4, 2018 PERPETUAL ADORATION AT HOME WITH YOUR BROTHER aint Mother Teresa said that to love is to do S small things with great love. So what are these small things that one can do? Let s begin with home. Home is where the heart is; that s a familiar saying but how much attention is paid to it? Sometimes home is neglected in favor of pursuing things that one thinks is greater. To keep one s home cheerful is of utmost importance and can be accomplished by keeping in mind how mindful Jesus is of all our needs and extending that mindfulness to each person in our families. Noticing a need and helping with it, consoling in disappointments, disregarding unkind words, asking if one wants a cup of tea, helping to clean a room, sewing loose buttons, reading aloud from inspiring books, praying together, smiling in adversity, and seeing the good these are but a few of the small things that can be remembered for a lifetime by our family members. he world provides plenty of fodder for discouragement. Let none come from within our own T homes. Our hearts can be filled with love for each other when we ask Our Lord to fill us with His love. But our hearts need to be emptied of all that blocks room for His love. Love begins at home, then each one can say with heartfelt gratitude, There s no place like home How can this be accomplished? By going to Jesus. He is present in Confession, which is a great healing Sacrament; He is present in the Holy Eucharist which gives us strength to keep trying though we may fail in our intentions, and He is present in the Adoration Chapel which is home for all souls who need rest and love. And WHAT A VERY GREAT LOVE IT IS that is offered so simply by the brother of us all. The Perpetual Adoration Chapel is open to all who wish to visit Our Lord. An adorer is needed on Saturdays from 7-8 pm. To sign up for that hour or any other, please call Joan Taylor at or Mary Lewis at Taizé Prayer Service Immaculate Conception Church, 132 Arthur St., Elmhurst, invites you to join them for an hour of communal meditative singing, scripture, candle light, silent reflection, and prayers for the world in this ecumenical prayer service on Monday, Feb. 12, at 7pm. Once again, Visitation parishioners have come through and have helped make many families and individuals Christmas a little brighter through our Sharing Tree Program. The generosity of our people is so heartwarming. Not only did they respond with so many wonderful gifts, the number of people who came to help sort and how well they worked together, was amazing to see. A big thank you also goes to the woman who made all the ornaments, the committee who wrote/labeled the ornaments, and those who helped me set up the rooms prior to the gifts return date. Numerous individuals also responded by giving cash and gift card donations through Deacon Tony, which helped us with the Sharing Tree and will continue to help those in need in our community throughout the year. We collected close to 1,000 gifts this year that helped families and individuals in our local and parish community, St. Joseph in Addison, St. Alexis in Bensenville, as well some other parishes. Thanks to everyone for all their help. Monica Spatafore Thank you so much to you and all the Visitation families who for the past years have brought joy to many St. Alexis families (mine included). Blessings and love to your family from ours. St. Alexis Church Gift Coordinator
