PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney November 25, 2018 Page Three When I was in Junior High, Disney came out with the Lion King. I remember being captured by the music and of the main character, Simba, who was fighting between guilt and shame because the loss of his father who was king, and then his becoming the king, which was his destiny. he movie, however, reveals the early broken T view of Kingship that Simba desired with the song, I Just Can t Wait to Be King. Simba s ideas revolved in telling people what to do, receiving all the attention, and of course not being told what to do! Isn t that our view, when we hear of Kingship? Don t we imagine sometimes what it would feel like to rule? Yet, even the Lion King reveals that kingship is not about self, but about others. The movie actually reveals something foundational found in Kingship and our faith! This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. hrist reveals by his life, that He didn t come to C be served, but to serve. This doesn t sound like the selfish King, who is seeking attention and telling others what to do. He came to fight for His people, invite people into His Kingdom, and lay down His life for us! This example Jesus Christ gives us, is the example we are all called to live! e are part of this royal family, brought into W the family of God through Baptism. We too, like Christ are called to rule, not in our selfishness, but in a life-giving love willing to fight for others and not our self-interest. May the Lord inspire us this day, as King of Kings, let us imitate our King in word and in deed! 2018 Catholic Ministries ANNUAL APPEAL Goal: $136, Amount Pledged: $159, Amount Paid: $156, Donor Count: 414 Thank you to all who have responded to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. We are most grateful for your generosity and will keep you in our prayers.

4 Page Four November 25, 2018 Scripture Reflections for JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE LIVING the WORD November 25, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: A TRUE KING, KING OF TRUTH We live in a shifting time, when people are replacing what is true with what they believe is true. In Christ, we know what a true king is, though it may not match up with what others believe a king to be. FIRST READING One like a Son of Man received dominion, glory, and kingship (Daniel 7:13-14). The Son of Man stands before the Ancient One (Yahweh) to receive power and dominion over the nations. This was written as a promise to Israel (The Son of Man) would eventually triumph over all of its enemies. At the time of Jesus, it was understood more in terms of the Messiah being given rule over all of the nations upon the earth (which is the way that we use this reading). SECOND READING Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead (Revelation 1:5-8). Jesus is the first of those who will rise from the dead. The firstfruits are usually known as the best of the harvest and the promise that more fruit will follow. Jesus is the best of those who will rise, but he is also the promise that we, too, will rise with him. Jesus is also the king of kings. This was an important statement to be made during a time of persecution when it seemed as if the pagan kings ruled and controlled everything (and even in our days when it sometimes seems as if things happen with no rhyme or reason). The author of this book is saying that this is an illusion. Jesus is the true king of kings and nothing can occur without his consent. Visitation Catholic Church GOSPEL For this I came into the world, to testify to the truth (John 18:33b-37). The Gospel speaks of the kingship of Christ. It recounts the trial of Jesus before Pilate. Jesus explains to Pilate that his kingdom is not of this world. He did not come into this world to establish a political kingdom or to free the Jews from Roman dominion. Jesus came to set us free from out greater bondage, the bondage of sin and death. He does this by proclaiming in word and deed how much the Father loves us. Jesus is not king who will reign upon a majestic throne and wear a crown of gold. He will reign upon a cross and wear a crown of thorns; in doing this, he showed what true authority is. The authority of the rulers of this world is nothing but an illusion. They believe that they control events, but it is only love that can truly conquer. Jesus is the king of love upon the cross. REFLECTION Human ideas about royalty often diverge from how Jesus identifies himself throughout the Gospels. Christ is a king whose throne was a cross (Luke). Christ is a shepherd king, served by attention to the least, the last, and the lost (Matthew). Christ s kingdom is not of this world (John). Christ reigns by serving the truth: Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice (John 18:17). But what is truth? Dictionaries define truth as being consistent with fact or reality, something accepted as true, or the message of God proclaimed by the prophets and Jesus Christ. We impose human understandings of royalty on Jesus Christ as king. It s a human tendency to project our experience and understanding onto people and things we value, to assert what we believe, or affirm the impact someone has had on us. The result is that we picture Christ on a throne, wearing fine robes and a crown and holding a scepter, with servants bowing before him. The truth is that Jesus Christ is a servant king. He washes feet. His throne was a cross. His power source was fidelity to God s message, which brought him rejection, crucifixion, and death. His kingdom is not of this world. Living his reign leads to the Ancient One, to whom belong dominion and glory. If we can accept that truth we will honor Christ, the King of the Universe, by washing feet, caring for the least, the last, and the lost, and thus find life by accepting death. Then every eye will see this Servant King in those of us who embody the truth he came to share. 7 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 25, 2018 Page Seven Come Early to Mass To Pray Your Rosary! TODAY IS THE FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING Join us 30 minutes before the start of all weekend Masses to pray the Rosary. Isn t it heart inspiring to envision your Lord as King, King of the Universe? S T. THERESA OF AVILA CALLED JESUS, HIS MAJESTY. What a great and wonderful thing to be a subject of such a great and benevolent King. Imagine walking into the throne room of an earthly king. You d walk straight, wearing your best clothes, and smiling, your thoughts would be filled with, I hope I can impress him or at least do nothing stupid in front of him. I hope my words are neither none too many nor none too few. Now fast forward to your encounter with Christ in all His magnificent splendor in the afterlife, most likely you ll be speechless. And yet f you ve encountered Christ while in time on earth, you will recognize with great joy the One who loves you most. Your instinct will most likely be one of rushing into His arms. And then, When the Son of man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him He will sit on His glorious throne and He will place the sheep at His right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the King will say to those at His right hand, Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me. (MT 25:31-40) What does this mean? Jesus teaches earlier in the Gospel of Matthew that whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave; even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as ransom for many. (MT 20:26-28) Truly, it is a great treasure to have Our King present with us in the Adoration Chapel. Consider it a throne room. There, Love awaits your presence! Now is the time to visit Him without fear and trembling. he soul that trustingly casts itself with reckless abandonment into the arms of God in times of trouble and tribulation, when supernatural strength is demanded, is a soul that understands and experiences what Paul expressed so emphatically: I can do all things through Him who strengthens me (Phil 4:13). The King equips us with all that is necessary to become ambassadors for His Kingdom. Come, and learn from Him at the foot of His Throne! The Adoration Chapel needs a registered adorer for the Monday 11 PM time slot. One hour a week, can translate into an eternity of joy. Plus, there are 42 hours that need partners!! Surely, we don t want our King to brush the dirt from His sandals and move on. Let s show Him we are willing subjects! 11 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 25, 2018 Page Eleven First Saturday Devotions to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Next Saturday, Dec. 1, 8:15 am, in the Church We extend a warm invitation to all parishioners to join us once a month for the Five First Saturdays Devotion in honor of Mary s Immaculate Heart, beginning with 8:15 am Mass. Devotion follows with 45 minutes of prayer, reflection, and meditation. Why Five Saturdays? The number five is significant because Jesus told Sister Lucia (one of the Fatima seers) that there are five kinds of offenses and blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary: Blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception. Blasphemies against her Virginity. Blasphemies against her Divine Maternity. Blasphemies of those who openly seek to foster in the hearts of children, indifference or contempt and even hatred for Mary Immaculate. Blasphemies of those who directly insult her in her sacred statues and images. Our Lady s words to Sister Lucia: I promise at the hour of death to help with the graces needed for their salvation, whoever on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months, shall confess and receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the rosary with the intention of making reparation to me. It is a great way to start your Saturday!
