If you knew you had one week to live what would you do? t was a simple question often asked while I was I in Junior High and High School. Of course, the point of the question was to discover information about the crazy destination trips you longed for, but also to see what changes you would make from everyday life. The answers varied among my friends from travels to Rome, Antarctica or even space; to some wanting to spend time with family, friends, and loved ones. If you were really smart, the response would be; spend time with family and friends in Rome! As much as this is an inquisitive question to bring about conversation, it is also a question revealing a deep-rooted truth: We are not living as we should! Our call as Christians is to be saints. What does this mean? Let me explain. e are called as men and women to live out W our vocations as brothers and sisters in Christ, sons and daughters of God. This work is a selfless one of countless sacrifices, responding to give of ourselves totally and completely in every moment to God and our neighbor. If we are already doing that, and then the answer to the following question is: I wouldn t change anything, I m going to live this day as every other day, I m going to live for God and for neighbor. Look at all the lives of the Saints who dedicated their life to the Lord and others; St. Mother Theresa, St. Damien Molokai, St. Padre Pio to name a few. How do you think they would have responded to that question? s we come to the end of the Ordinary Liturgical A season and prepare to enter into the Advent season, the reading selections are about end times; the Second Coming of Christ. Why? In a way the Church is asking us to look at our lives and to see if we are living as Saints. If we are, there is nothing to worry about and then we await in joyful expectation for the Second Coming of Christ. If we are not, we may find ourselves asking for more time to change or do something differently! Let s not find ourselves in the latter. It might be appropriate to ask ourselves the simple, yet a variation to my junior high and high school question: If you knew you had one week to live, can you say you are living the life the Lord has called you to live?

4 Page Four November 18, 2018 Scripture Reflections for THIRTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD November 18, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: THE END IS NEAR OR IS IT? In a way, it would be simpler to live out the rest of our lives if we knew precisely when all would come to an end. Jesus calls us to something more difficult: living that way even though we don t know. FIRST READING Those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever (Daniel 12:1-3). The readings for the last week of Ordinary Time are always a bit apocalyptic in nature. They are preparing us for the end of the Church Year and also for the end of the world. This reading speaks of Michael, the archangel, who will fight a great battle against the forces of evil. There will be a time of tribulation. Apocalyptic books always spoke of this tribulation as a time when the good would be tested and the evil would be defeated. Finally, those who have died will rise from the grave, some to receive their eternal reward and others to be condemned and suffer their eternal punishment. SECOND READING Where there is forgiveness, there is no longer offering for sin (Hebrews 10:11-14, 18). Jesus is the perfect High Priest who offered the sacrifice of his life and love once and for all time. There was no need to repeat this sacrifice, for it was perfectly effective in obtaining the forgiveness of our sins. When we celebrate the Eucharist, we are not repeating the sacrifice of Jesus one more time. At Mass, we pass outside of the normal understanding of time and place. We are present Visitation Catholic Church again at the Last Supper and Mount Calvary. We are not repeating it; we are once again present at it. GOSPEL Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away (Mark 13:24-32). Jesus speaks of the end of the world. He uses language that was in vogue during his time, e.g., tribulation, cosmic disturbances, etc. Jesus also speaks of the Son of Man descending upon a cloud. This is a citation from the Book of Daniel, which states that the Son of Man will appear before the Ancient One (Yahweh) to receive power and dominion. Jesus is saying that he will rule over the heavens and the earth at the end of time. Jesus tells his listeners to look for signs, but he also tells them that no one knows when it will occur. We are always seeing signs of our own end (e.g., gray hair, pain, etc.). These are reminders that we will not last forever, and therefore should be ready for our end. As for the end of the world, while we believe in it, we do not know when it will occur. REFLECTION How many generations thought that they lived during the end-times? World War I was the war to end all wars. World War II saw the Holocaust and atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Vietnam War gave us Agent Orange. Today we fear terrorism and ISIS. At each of these times, it seemed as through the powers in the heavens [were] shaken (Mark 13:25b), and it was a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time (Daniel 12:1b). Personal events like death, divorce, accusation, or a terminal diagnosis often feel the same. Yet here we are. Life goes on. Jesus says, Of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father (Mark 13:32). We do not know when the end will come, globally or personally. We do know that life is terminal. An end will come. Vigilance and focusing on the words that will not pass away help us find Christ present with us at all times. St. Francis de Sales calls this The Will of God s Good Pleasure. There is no place or thing where God is not present: health and sickness, life and death, terror or peace. God desires our good, that is, freedom from evil. In other words, life happens and God is always there. So look for God in all circumstances of life. Find the Son of Man with you, whatever happens. Be vigilant! Look! Listen! Christ is with us and will help us to be ready whenever the end comes. 7 Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2018 Page Seven SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND, NOV. 17/18 A LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Diocese of Joliet will participate in the national collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) during the weekend of November 17-18, Your support for this collection brings change to communities across the country and empowers those living in poverty to transform the places they live into reflections of the Kingdom of God. CCHD funds create communities that are more just and welcoming to those who live trapped in the cycle of poverty. Besides making an impact nationally, a share of the funds collected are used to empower those living in poverty within our own borders. In the Diocese of Joliet, for example, we provide grants for organizations that help human-trafficking victims with counseling services and support groups. These funds are used to provide educational workshops for immigrant and impoverished communities, and they have also funded a community garden enterprise led by low-income youth. Your support for this collection makes a very real difference for people living in poverty across the United States. Please prayerfully consider how you might contribute to CCHD this year. If you would like more information about the collection and the people it supports, visit Thank you for joining us to work on the margins. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet
