PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney If I could teach one class repeatedly, I would choose the Creation stories in Genesis as the most important to teach! I think they are the most overlooked and dismissed in all of Scripture because they are considered by some as mythological stories. People get caught up on trying to read Creation in the light of science and history, but what they don t realize is that the author, who is inspired by God, tries to reveal to us something about the human person and God s plan. I n our first reading, we hear about how man is all alone. God puts Adam into a deep sleep and from Adam s side/rib, God creates Eve. What do you think God is revealing in this Scripture? Why is Adam first in the creation of humanity? Why is Eve second? S ome people dismiss this story because they think it has to do with misogyny. Men come first!?! Ladies second!?! But they would be missing the mark! Everything needs to be looked within the lens of the New Testament and of Christ, it especially the Creation accounts! As revealed by St. Paul in the Scriptures: Christ is the New Adam; the Church is the New Eve. When Jesus Christ s side is pierced; blood and water pour out from his side and the Church is created. Sacramentally, the water represents Baptism and His blood the Eucharist. W hich gives reason to why the rib was selected from Adam. The rib is the protector of the heart. To know Adam, one needs to turn to Eve. If the Church is the New Eve, the Church is the protector of Jesus Christ s heart. It is in the Church we encounter Christ s Mercy. It is in the Church we encounter God s absolute love of Christ in the Eucharist. h, how much we would lose of our understanding of God and ourselves, if we were to dismiss the Creation stories in Genesis!?! O Let us turn back to the protector of Christ s heart, the Church and learn more about our God and His love for us!

4 Page Four October 7, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY LIVING the WORD October 7, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: SEEKING, THEN DOING The will of God is shown to us in many ways. Our sincere desire to seek God s will and discern its guidance for our lives is the starting point of discipleship. FIRST READING The man said, "This one is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called 'woman' (Gen 2:18-24). This reading speaks of divorce and how it violates God s intention that man and woman be joined in marriage. This is a very ancient account, and it is more of a parable than a historic account. The naming of the animals was an act of dominion. When one knew the name of something, then one had power over it. God forms Eve out of Adam s rib ( rib is the Sumerian word for life ). Men and women were intended for each other and they complete each other. SECOND READING He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin (Hebrews 2:9-11). This letter is part of a series that will continue for seven Sundays before the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe. There is much Hebrew and Greek symbolism in this work. It is not quite a letter, but actually more of a treatise. This reading uses Hebrew imagery to make a point. This author says that, He for a little while was made lower than the angels, that by grace he might taste death for everyone. (thus making it refer to the incarnation). This celebrates the fact that Jesus was born one like us to save us. GOSPEL Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it (Mark 10:2-16 [2-12]). The Gospel begins with the question of divorce. Many of the rabbis at the time of Jesus were interpreting the law to make it easy as possible for a man to divorce his wife. (Wives were not permitted to divorce their husbands.) They could be divorced for something as trivial as burning a meal. Jesus rejected this tendency as an abuse. He was trying to protect women from exploitation, but, he was also trying to protect the sanctity of the bonds of marriage. He taught that God intended man and woman to become one flesh. It is absolutely clear that Jesus condemned divorce. This is not something that the Church made up later. The second half of the reading speaks of children who were being brought to Jesus to be blessed. From the tenor it would appear that the parents of these children were insistent and they were bothering Jesus, based upon power and prestige. He welcomed and blessed the little ones and he also told his disciples that they must learn from and become like those children (filled with simplicity and innocence and not with the hunger for power that the disciples were so often exhibiting in this Gospel. REFLECTION Understanding the Word today makes an important distinction. The Pharisees are grounded in Moses: Moses permitted a husband (Mark 10:4). Jesus is grounded in God: God made them male and female (Mark 10:6). Like Jesus, the teachings of Moses and the prophets are meant to ground us in God. Instead of asking, What would Jesus do? we should ask, What does God ask us to do? Seek to know the will of God and then do it. What is God s will? In Genesis God makes clear that we are not to be alone. So find suitable companionship, partnership, support. God is a community of three persons, and we likewise are to live community, with all its give and take. What is God s will? That we empty ourselves, live sacrificial love, like Christ, who for a little while was made lower than the angels. Sacrificial love is selfless and unconditional. What is God s will? That we be committed and work through tough times. Don t give up on each other until it is clear no solution can be found. What is God s will? That we be like children. They are open, receptive, and trusting, until life events tarnish those qualities. In Jesus day, children had no rights and were among the least of all. So pay attention to the least among us. We come to know the will of God in scripture, the liturgy, Church teaching, and life events. God is with us even when life deals us a blow, like a ruptured relationship. Look for God. Ask yourself, What would God ask me to do? Then, do it. Visitation Parish and the Eastern DuPage Deanery welcome Deacon Keith Strohm as he presents INTENTIONAL DISCIPLESHIP Monday, Oct. 15, 7-8:30 pm Immaculate Conception Church Chapel 130 Arthur St., Elmhurst What if there was more to being Catholic than simply belonging to a religious organization? What if there was a way to find out who we really are and discover our life s purpose? The kerygma lies at the heart of all evangelization. The central message of the Christian faith is that all believers are called to proclaim. Deacon Keith will talk about five paradigm shifts that church leaders must make in order to transform their parishes. From an: institutional faith to intentional faith; culture of engagement to culture of encounter; focus on maintenance to focus on mission; programs to people; avoidance to accountability. Once leadership has made these shifts, they need to connect strategy, people, and operations to create a culture of discipleship and mission. This newly created culture and its principles should influence, inform, and guide the actions and activities of the parish. Please register at easterndupagedeanery.org. At the start of Mass (after Opening Prayer), the priest will invite children forward and give them a blessing. An adult leader and teen helper will lead them from church to the Parish Center Fireside Room Center. (Parents may go with their child(ren) the first few times if apprehensive.) The leader will proclaim the Scripture readings from the Mass (in a kid-friendly translation) and discuss its meaning (using a leader s guide). A song/brief activity may be incorporated to enhance the experience. The session ends with a simplified Profession of Faith (Creed) and petitions, with the children being encouraged to voice their own. Adult and teen leaders will walk the children back into church at the time of the collection is being taken, making sure children return to sit with their parents. In addition to providing children with an experience of the Liturgy of the Word that is more at their own level, CLOW also helps parents to hear the Scripture readings and homily in a deeper way.
