CHRIST IS OUR HOPE DIOCESE OF JOLIET MAGAZINE APPEAL Christ is our Hope Magazine arrives in your mailbox each month, filled with educational stories about our faith, personal journeys, and news in our parishes. This magazine keeps the seven counties of our Diocese connected by sharing the Good News with each other. On behalf of Bishop Conlon, prayerfully consider making a generous donation to this year s Christ is our Hope Magazine Appeal. To make a gift online: or, simply write a check and mail to: Christ is our Hope Magazine Appeal Development Office, Weber Rd., Crest Hill, IL You may have noticed that the statue of Our Blessed Mother has been missing from outside, or that the Tabernacle looked different. Both the statue and the Tabernacle have been sent out for renovation and will return shortly. Several weeks ago, the project to varnish the pews began and soon the kneelers will be repaired or replaced depending on their need. NEWS FROM THE P.I.T. PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney It is easy to get frustrated with God, especially when it comes to not knowing what the future holds; but in the end I am so grateful for the unknown! Thank you for your support Catholic Ministries ANNUAL APPEAL Goal: 136, Amount Pledged: 158, Amount Paid: 153, Donor Count: 407 Thank you to all who have responded to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. We are most grateful for your generosity and will keep you in our prayers. W hy? Because I know I am weak and if I knew all the crosses I was going to have to endure, I would not be able to respond to the Lord. If I knew all my illnesses, injuries, that would come when I was a child, I believe I would fall into despair. If I knew the various crosses that would be involved in my vocation as a priest, it would have been very hard to say yes to the priesthood. But in a way, the Lord doesn t reveal it all at once, because God wants us to rely on His Grace and to receive each cross as it comes. In doing so, we are able to endure much and achieve great things! I see God not revealing too much in the Gospel this weekend with his Apostles. J ames and John pull Jesus aside and ask to sit at Jesus right and left. Jesus is heading to Jerusalem, they believe Jesus is about to reign as King. And he is, but on the cross. The right and left that they request is one of crucifixion. Jesus reveals to his Apostles, in mystery, that they will indeed drink from the cup he is to drink. He just doesn t reveal to his apostles that it will be a cup of suffering. Y et the death of Christ brings about our salvation, and the death of the Apostles through martyrdom becomes the fruit of the Church and the foundation of our faith! So once again, I am humbled and grateful that the Lord doesn t reveal the future to me. I just ask for the grace to respond to the Lord each day so that I may pick up my cross and follow Him!

4 Page Four October 21, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD October 21, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: LEADERS WHO SERVE, SERVANTS WHO LEAD A good portion of discipleship is balancing the place of servanthood, and leadership in our lives. In some way, each of us is called to do both in our life of faith. FIRST READING My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11). This passage comes from the fourth of the songs of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah. It presents the idea that the servant will suffer for the sake of his people. Through his suffering and death, their sins will be forgiven. Furthermore, God will reward the servant for the fact that he gave up his life by raising him from the dead. (This is how he will see fullness of days even though he dies for the sake of our sins.) SECOND READING Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16). One of the central images of the Letter to the Hebrews is that Jesus is our High Priest. He offered up the sacrifice of his own life. (He was, therefore, both the priest lifting up the offering and the offering itself.) We are filled with confidence, for although Jesus exercised this great office, he nevertheless was able to identify with our weakness. He experienced everything we do except sin, so he understands us and can empathize with our need. GOSPEL Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all (Mark 10:35-45 [42-45]). Over these past several weeks we have seen two predictions of the passion and the numerous examples of how the disciples misinterpreted what Jesus was saying. Jesus spoke of giving up his life in service, while the disciples thought in terms of power and prestige. This Gospel is one more example of their incomprehension. Immediately before this passage Jesus has predicted his passion a third time. James and John respond to this prediction by asking for the favor of sitting on Jesus right and left. This is comparable to telling your best friend that you are dying, and hearing that person say that it is a shame but could they have your car when you are gone. Jesus speaks of the fate of suffering and dying for others in terms of being baptized and drinking the cup of which he is to drink. This reminds us that both of these sacraments (Baptism and Eucharist) are forms of dying to oneself in order to live for and in Christ. He also tells them that the greatest in the kingdom is not the one who is served by others, but rather the one who serves. This is a Gospel logic that is contrary to the values of the world. REFLECTION How do you describe the qualities of a leader? According to online dictionaries, a leader is someone who directs a group, has commanding authority, manages activities, or is the principal player in a group. Common to these definitions is being the first of all. We do not find the definition that Jesus offers: Whoever wishes to be the first among you will be the slave of all. (Mark 10:44), like Jesus, who came to serve and not to be served. Pope Francis keeps asking that Church leaders smell like the sheep, to be with their people. This is true for all of us, whatever our role in the Church might be. We are called to live with God by drinking the cup of a sacrificial love that attends to and responds to the needs of all. Then whether others see us as first, last or in-between won t matter, because serving like Christ, the servant leader, will be our hallmark and defining characteristic. Who is an example of a servant leader for you? Why? When is it difficult for you to live the sacrificial love that Jesus models and asks? 6 Page Six October 21, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND, OCTOBER 20/21 Please put your donations in with your Sunday offerings FROM OUR BISHOP Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Annually, the next-to-last Sunday of October marks the Church s Eucharistic celebration for the Missions, World Mission Sunday. In his message for this year s celebration on October 21, Pope Francis explains that life is a mission. Each one of us is called to reflect on this fact: I am a mission on this Earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world (Evangelii Gaudium 273), he writes. Focusing on young people, he notes: In speaking to you, I also address all Christians who live out in the Church the adventure of their life as children of God. I invite all of us in this diocese to see World Mission Sunday as a special moment to live out the mission we share as God s children, the mission to bring the Gospel to the whole world. I encourage you to be a voice for mission through your prayers and through the help that you are able to give in support of the priests, religious and lay pastoral leaders who work tirelessly, day in and day out, proclaiming the Gospel, building the Church, and serving the poor in more than 1,100 mission dioceses in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. The prayers and material aid generously given to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith on World Mission Sunday, the Pope explains, continue to support the preaching of the Gospel to every nation, thus contributing to the human and cultural growth of all those who thirst for knowledge of the truth. Our Diocese has a special concern for the missions as currently we sponsor five mission trips a year: two University mission trips to Bolivia and the Philippines and three medical and construction trips to Bolivia, the Philippines and to the Navajo Nation. We are also exploring new mission sites which we hope to begin in A portion of this important collection also supports our mission efforts. Mission revitalizes faith, Pope Francis reminds us, quoting Saint Pope John Paul II in Redemptoris Missio (#2). May your commitment to the Lord s continuing mission renew your faith and be a blessing in your life. And may you know of my personal gratitude for your generous response on this unique day for the entire Church, and throughout the year, as you are able. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet When you give to Missions you give to the World. The Society for the Propagation of the Faith

7 Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Visitation is starting a Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) Program during 10 am Sunday Mass. This is for children ages 4 through 4th grade... At the start of Mass (after Opening Prayer), the priest will invite children forward to give them a blessing. An adult leader and teen helper will lead them from church to the Parish Center Fireside Room. (Parents may go with their child(ren) the first few times if apprehensive.) The leader proclaims Scripture readings from the Mass (in a kid-friendly translation) and discuss its meaning (using a leader s guide). A song or brief activity may be incorporated to enhance the experience. The session ends with a simplified Profession of Faith (Creed) and petitions, with the children being encouraged to voice their own. Adult and teen leaders will walk the children back into church as the collection is being taken, and make sure children return to sitting with their parents. In addition to providing children with an experience of the Liturgy of the Word that is more at their own level, CLOW also helps parents to hear the Scripture readings and homily in a deeper way, since they won t be distracted by their younger children fidgeting in the pews. If you or your teenager would like to lead Children s Liturgy Of the Word (CLOW)... Please contact Matt Pozen in the RE Office at matt.pozen@visitationcc.org or x 502. Matt will provide training, leader s guide, as well as ongoing support. With enough volunteers, leaders can be rotated weekly. Come join this fun and fulfilling ministry! THOMAS MORE, martyred in 1535 for his silence against King Henry VIII s desire for divorce, to be the patron saint not only of lawyers but statesmen and politicians, as well. There are many reasons for proclaiming Thomas More patron of statesman and people in public life. Among these is the need felt by the world of politics and public administration for credible role models able to indicate the path of truth at a time in history when difficult challenges are crucial responsibilities are increasing. Today, in fact, strong innovative economic forces are reshaping social structures, on the other hand, scientific achievements in the area of biotechnology underline the need to defend human life at all its different stages, while the promises of a new society successfully presented to a bewildered public opinion urgently demand clear political decisions in favor of the family, young people, the elderly and the marginalized. In this context, it is helpful to turn to the example of St. Thomas More, who distinguished himself by his constant fidelity to legitimate authority and institutions precisely in his intention to serve not power, but the supreme ideal of justice. His life teaches us that government is above all an exercise in virtue. October is the month that we as Catholics dedicate our prayers to the protection of life. It is also the month dedicated to reciting the Rosary. In fact, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, made a specific plea to the faithful to pray the Rosary this month. Given the political climate in the United States, it is imperative that we Catholics raise our voices in prayer for a return to the acknowledgement of God in the public square. Practicing our faith behind closed doors is not what the call to evangelization asks for. Prayer strengthens and enlightens all: those who pray and those for whom we pray. It is well to remember the words of Psalm 57, I lie in the midst of lions that greedily devour the sons of men; their teeth are spears and arrows, their tongues sharp swords. But the psalm doesn t end there. It continues with these words, My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody I will give thanks to thee, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to thee among the nations and it ends with these words, Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let thy glory be over all the earth! Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is especially efficacious. Become like the blind beggar Bartimaeus who did not cease to cry after our Savior as He walked by, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! There follows after that these lines, And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more (Mk 10:47-48). We, too, must not let the chance to call on Christ slip by. We must never give up or give in to disorder or despair. Jesus said to Bartemaeus, What do you want me to do for you? He asks us the same question. Be unafraid to answer! Then we too can hear those beautiful words of Our Savior, Go your way, your faith has made you well. The Adoration Chapel is open 24/7. A prayerful soul is needed for an empty hour on Wednesdays at 2 AM. Please call Joan Taylor at or Mary Lewis at
