5 PARISH BUSINESS News from the P.I.T. Priest in Training There are many things that stand out in the Palm Sunday Gospel reading (for it is a long reading). But one of the most profound moments is when Pontius Pilate makes the people choose between Jesus or Barabbas. In a way, the choice Pontius Pilate puts before the Jews is a choice given us today! Let me explain. Pontius Pilate brings before the Jewish people two men: Jesus, son of the Heavenly Father and Bar-abbas, whose name literally means son of the father (Bar = Son of the; Abbas = Father). Pontius Pilate wants the people to choose whom they will follow. Will they choose to follow Jesus Christ, the son of the Heavenly Father, or will they follow Bar-abbas, a son of a different father? (Matthew 27:21) Will they follow a man whose message stands for service and self-sacrifice (Jesus) or will they follow the man who is known as a zealot, murderer acting on his own desires and wants (Barabbas). Will they choose a life of holiness or will they choose a life of sin? This same choice is given to us today! Whom will you choose? Will you choose Jesus and live selflessly? Will you choose a life of sin and live selfishly? Not only are we confronted by this choice on Palm Sunday, but we are reminded of this again on Good Friday as well! Let us aim during this Holy Week to reaffirm our decision to choose the Lord, to turn away from our sin, and live a life that is a gift to others. Fr. 6 Lord, I Believe, Help My Unbelief Those who do not believe in the Eucharist have not been blessed with the faith to believe; it is as simple as that. If we do not see Jesus in the Eucharist, then we need to ask for the blessing of faith. Jesus wants to bless each one of us with this gift of faith in His Eucharistic Presence. To see Jesus is important, because Jesus is our connection to the Father. Jesus is the Way to the Father. Jesus alone opens the gate to Heaven. This is the goal and purpose of humanity to be immersed in the Love of the Holy Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. If we have this faith, it can sanctify all that we do: our work, our play, and our prayer. Even the mundane becomes a treasure that can be deposited in the pool of merits that Our Lord can distribute as grace for the good of others in the church. This is a connective reality. Today we welcome Jesus with praises of Hosanna! Let us acknowledge His holy Presence every time we pass a church or enter a chapel. Believing, through the gift of faith, without the help of senses, that Jesus is truly present in the Holy Eucharist will transform any sinful indifference into a new enthusiasm to be a soldier for the body of Christ. Think how happy it will make Our Lord and His Holy Mother when we offer them little sacrifices. Our sacrifices can help those who are still in the shadows of sin and the misery it brings. Our Lord awaits your presence in the Adoration Chapel. Allow Him to change your sense of obligation to one of joy. Let your visits become part of your weekly schedule. Mt 18:19 Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman A Defense of One s Life Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman ( ) was a highly influential Anglican priest, and Oxford professor in the early years of the 19 th Century in England. In l842, he left Oxford to study the early Church Fathers, and to reflect on the then poplar viewpoint that Anglicanism was the middle way between Protestantism and the Roman Catholic Church. His study led him to the conclusion that the Roman Catholic Church was the one, true Church. He was received into the Roman Catholic Church in He was ordained a Catholic priest in After his conversion, he was rejected by Protestants and viewed with suspicion by Catholics. In response to a scurrilous public attack by a Protestant clergyman in 1864, Newman wrote his spiritual autobiography, Apologia Pro Vita Sua, or A Defense of One s Life. Written in flowing prose and a conversational style, Newman s Apologia concludes with a refutation of the roots of the principles underlying Protestantism and remains a work that has helped clarify perceptions of Roman Catholicism among readers of every faith since the time of its publication. John Henry Newman was named a Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in In September 2010, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him.
