3 News from the P.I.T. Priest in Training We proclaim in our Profession of Faith: We believe in One God, three persons. It is a deep mystery of our faith, but that same mystery points to the deep mystery within ourselves: the human person longs for relationship! Why? Because we were made in the image and likeness of our God, who is a communion of persons! Yet, what do we experience in the world. Do we experience perfect relationship, perfect communion? No, if anything, our heart is torn because there is division among our family and friends. Why? Because sin entered the world. It is in sin that we are separated. It is in sin that we are isolated. It is in sin we are led down a path against our very being. Just look at the destructive behaviors of alcoholism, drug addicts, and other addictions. St. Mother Theresa, who served in Calcutta among the poorest of the poor and the dying, wrote, the most terrible poverty is loneliness, and the feeling of being unloved. She saw the spiritual poverty in America so much great then the poverty in India! St. Paul saw the disconnect between one another and sin as he lists the some of the 10 commandments like adultery, murder, stealing, coveting; these sins would divide neighbor against neighbor. As, St. Paul points out. If you want to live out the 10 commandments, then You shall love your neighbor as yourself! We were made for communion, made for relationship. First and foremost, with our God, but also with one another. Let us repent of our sins, accept the loving power of Christ, who conquered sin and death, and to love our neighbor as our self! Fr. Michael Kearney Join Our New Welcome Committee We are looking for volunteers for a new Welcome Committee. The goal of the committee is to find ways to make our new parishioners feel more included in our church family. Once the Committee is established, let the ideas flow. Deacon Mike Iozzo has volunteered and will be working with the Committee. If you are interested please call the Rectory or welcome@visitationcc.org. Michelle Lefeld Business Manager PARISH BUSINESS Second Collection for Hurricane Harvey Victims In cooperation with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Conlon has asked that we take up an emergency collection this weekend for the people affected by Hurricane Harvey. This emergency collection will be used to support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA and to provide pastoral and rebuilding support to impacted dioceses. Thank for your generosity. Everyday Stewardship Recognize God In Your Ordinary Moments I have to smile when I read in St. Paul s Letter to the Romans, Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another. I smile because I know that in today's world few people owe nothing to anyone. We have credit card debt, mortgages, student loans, car loans, and new loans to consolidate old loans. It would seem that we actually owe everything to everyone. These debts are of this world. I am pretty sure no one residing in heaven is still making mortgage payments. We have created contracts in this world to make possible certain transactions of goods, services, and shelter. But there is one thing that we naturally owe one another and that lasts longer than our time on earth: love. You do not need to take out a loan to have more love to give. There also is no limit to the love you have been given to share. However, it is the one gift that we sometimes treat with the least respect. We hold back love due to sins of pride, prejudice, and apathy. We distort and manipulate love for our own gain and selfish desires. We can find ourselves placing more importance on the things for which we have taken out loans than the love that is eternal. I am trying the best I can to get to a point where I no longer owe anything to banks and mortgage lenders. I don't want to leave this world owing anyone for the earthly things I had in this life. But even more importantly, I realize the shame it would be to leave people behind that didn t get enough love from me. There is nothing greater than love. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Page 3

A ladder rosary is a type of rosary whose origin comes from Mexico. It is named ladder because the beads are turned sideways and linked into a chain rather than to one another, making the beads look like rungs on a ladder. The ladder has a very long history in the scriptures and tradition. Jacob sees a ladder in the Old Testament, representing the ascent to God. Jesus appropriates this imagery to himself, the Ladder between heaven and earth. St. Benedict speaks of the Ladder of Humility, by which we climb to God. St. John Climacus speaks of the Ladder of Divine Ascent, the rungs being the different virtues leading to union with God. The Marian significance was also drawn out over time. St. Dominic experienced a vision of souls climbing into Heaven on the rosary. St. Francis de Sales had a vision of two ladders to Heaven: a rather steep one directly to Jesus, and another, far less steep, towards the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the vision, St. Francis de Sales heard Jesus say, Tell your people to come to me by this ladder, by way of My Mother. The Russian word for rosary means ladder, and Michelangelo's Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel shows two souls being pulled out of purgatory by a rosary! Please join the Visitation Rosary Makers Ministry on Tuesday, September 26, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. For more information, contact Lorene Bryan at or LorenePalgenBryan@gmail.com. 7 The Crisis of Civilization by Hilaire Belloc The Visitation Parish Catholic Reading Club is pleased to announce that we will be continuing our study of the historical elements of the Protestant Reformation this year. We will begin our new year by reading and discussing The Crisis of Civilization by noted 20 th century historian, Hilaire Belloc. In his earlier work, How the Reformation Happened, Belloc chronicled the factors contributing to and the events constituting the Protestant Reformation. In this 1937 book, Belloc discusses the far -reaching and likely unintended, unforeseen but nonetheless unfortunate consequences of the rupture of Christian unity and abandonment of the stable mores and standards which were for centuries, the foundation of what historians refer to as, Western Civilization. These include the impact of the Reformation on politics, philosophy, economics, culture and education. Readers will find in Belloc s analysis of the Reformation, roots of many of today s secular ideologies and tendencies. His recommendations for remedying these tendencies by a return to the faith and practice of the Catholic Church lend special urgency to the call for a New Evangelization. All are welcome to participate in the Catholic Book Club discussion of this book which will be on September 21, in the Hospitality Room in the Parish Center, 9:30 a.m. to noon. For additional information, a list of this year s books selections and a study guide for this month s selection, please contact Madonna Muscarello at gracicakes@gmail.com or at Troop 14 Annual Wreath Sale 2017 Boy Scouts from Visitation Troop 14 will hold their sales this year from September 10 to October 22. We can easily offend one another, even by doing the simplest of things. Feelings can be hurt and relationships can become hurtful. Sometimes, our own wounds end up wounding others. When division or discord results, rather than responding with anger, judgment, and vindication, Jesus instructs us to be compassionate, tolerant, respectful, and forgiving. We can do this even when we have to confront someone with the truth, which may not always be well received. Even with our brokenness, we are all an image of God and should do all in our power to properly resolve conflicts.
