3 PARISH BUSINESS News from the P.I.T. Priest in Training Why does God create evil? It was a written question asked by a high school student to a Totus Tuus team at a local parish this year. And as the Chaplain to that Totus Tuus team, I had the opportunity to preview the question and discuss it with the team before they replied to the student. The question was a great one, but is also revealed the great misunderstanding between God and evil. God does NOT create evil. God permits/allows evil to occur. For everything that God creates comes from Him and is good! But you can anticipate the follow up question, But why does God permit/allow evil? The parable in this week s Gospel touches on this point. The sower (God) had planted some seed (good), and while the sower was asleep, his enemy (not God) planted weeds (evil) in the mix of his wheat. Instead of ripping the weeds out right away, which would have affected the wheat, he allowed the weeds to grow, so that the wheat could reach maturation. The point of the parable: if God were to remove evil, the weeds, God would affect the good, the wheat. Philosophically speaking, if God removed evil, God would have affected our free will which in turn would prevent us from our ability to love and to be loved: the ultimate reason we were created! The great news that is not included in the parable, but is revealed in the life of Christ, is that we have God who doesn t leave us to endure through evil alone. We have a loving Father, who sends His Only Son into the world to join us in our suffering and death, who conquers evil and death, and after ascending back to the Father, gives us the Holy Spirit to help us on our journey back to God! This week we are blessed to have a Totus Tuus team here at Visitation and I m sure many similar questions will be asked. I d ask that you please keep the team and students in your prayers this week. 6 Blessed 20 th Anniversary of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel -Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist- On June 18, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi (the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ), Bishop Joseph M. Siegel celebrated Holy Mass at Visitation Church. This day was extra special for Visitation Parish because it also marked the 20 th Anniversary of Perpetual Adoration at Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist Adoration Chapel. After Holy Mass, the congregation processed with Bishop Siegel, Father Skowron, Father Kearney, Deacon Eaker, and Deacon O Ryan to the four altars surrounding the Visitation campus. It was a heavenly picture-perfect sunny, blue sky day. Warm breezes surrounded the faithful as they walked along the streets of Elmhurst with Jesus, giving public witness of their faith and devotion to Him in the Eucharist. A canopy covered our beloved Lord throughout the procession. The procession ended with Benediction and the Reposition of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel. Corpus Christi is a yearly feast day celebration, but you can be with Jesus 365 days a year in the Adoration Chapel. Don t delay, visit Him today. It will prove to be the best part of your day! 7 Prayer Quilt Ministry The Prayer Quilt Ministry would like to encourage all parishioners to let us know about those who are going through a significant difficulty and who may benefit from the prayers of our congregation and the tangible evidence of those prayers in the form of the prayer quilts. The recipients of the prayer quilts may be going through a health issue, facing surgery, be in the military (or just returned from military duty), dealing with grief, emotional concerns, etc. They do not have to be members of Visitation Parish or Catholic. Anyone may offer a prayer quilt to anyone you feel might benefit and appreciate being covered by our prayers. The recipient MUST agree to accept the prayer quilt. If you would like to request a prayer quilt for someone, please complete the form below, place it in the collection basket or drop off at the Rectory Business Office and someone from the prayer quilt ministry will get in touch with you to obtain additional information. The fair will be held on August 2 at St. Francis High School in Wheaton. Families will be able to get free school supplies, haircuts and more. To help Catholic Charities purchase supplies, Visitation s Council of Catholic Women (CCW) will be taking up a collection at the church exits after masses this weekend, July As you leave, please make a contribution to this worthy cause. And thank you for helping local children get off to a good start in the upcoming school year. Page 7 DIOCESAN Wedding Anniversary Mass Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet Sunday, August 27, at 2:00..
