3 Reflection This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. When people watch us, do they know that we are the disciples of Jesus? As Christians, we are called to do more than love the Lord. We are called to be his witnesses in the world by loving others as well. In today s Gospel reading, he gave us a new commandment, As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. Anyone, everyone, should be able to look at us and see this love in action. If we are not witnesses to this love, then we are falling short of our mission. So, how did Jesus love us? Selflessly. His love was never motivated by personal gain. On the contrary, he often suffered for us, and not just on the cross. He faced rejection and animosity for loving those who were considered unlovable in his culture. He lived a life of poverty and simplicity, never focused on amassing things for himself, but always willing to give of himself. This is the love we are called to imitate. The task can feel daunting. We are not perfect people, and being witnesses to Christ-like love can strike us as a lofty challenge. Of course, it s easier to be selfless and generous with people who love us in return, or with those who stir our compassion. But to be consistent witnesses to loving one another in all circumstances like Jesus does for us that takes it to another level. Thankfully, however, Jesus doesn t expect us to do this on our own. He promises us his Spirit to live in us and love through us. Through our baptism, we have his Spirit dwelling in our hearts, along with the supernatural gifts of faith, hope, and love. May we make these gifts flourish. Worldwide Marriage Encounter In today s Gospel Jesus commanded his disciples to love one another as He had loved them. Do we reflect this love in our lives and relationships, especially our marriage relationship? Let God show you how to love your spouse and others as He loves you. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends are June 10-12, 2016 or August 12-14, 2016 or October 7-9, 2016, all in Elk Grove Village, IL. Early registration is highly recommended. For reservations/information, call Jim & Kris at or contact us through Did you miss it? The Divine Mercy Mission, held on the weekend of April 1 3 at both Holy Trinity and Visitation parishes, was a beautiful reminder of the love and mercy of Jesus. To see a short video of this inspiring event, along with other resources for the Divine Mercy message and devotion, please visit the Visitation Parish website at Click on the rotating banner and Divine Mercy Corner sections to see all of these new additions. Jesus, I trust in you! PARISH BUSINESS Page 3 Special 2 nd Collection Next Sunday Gabriel Lara, director of the Quinn Community Center of St. Eulalia, will speak briefly after the homily next Sunday to talk about the many programs offered at the Quinn Community Center. Since we joined in partnership with the Center over two years ago, some of our parishioners have volunteered and seen first hand the great impact this center has had on the families and children it serves. Our Knights of Columbus have supported the center with fundraising dinners, and our school and religious education program, with the help of our CCW, are currently collecting art supplies and preparing to help stock and reorganize the center s art studio. These are just a few ways that we have been sharing in the ministries of the Quinn Center. Next Sunday, help us continue to help the Quinn Community Center and its ministries through our special second collection. Youth 4 Change Project The Youth 4 Change project is now entering its 5 th year! It has grown and transformed into an incredible community-based program. We now partner with 10 community organizations and a number of community volunteers to run the Quinn Center Summer Program. In 2013, we registered 56 campers, employed 21 teens, and offered programming for about three hours a day. This summer, we plan to register about 125 campers (including a new Early Childhood program), employ 35 teens, and offer full-day programming (9:00 3:00..) and tutoring through Golden Apple Scholars. We have also continued to develop programming specifically for our teen mentors to include job training, resume building, and the opportunity to work with local Champions in various fields. In addition, we will be providing a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snack prepared by women from a local co-op and in coordination with Loyola dietetics program. Our garden is now supplied by a local gardening center and run by the neighborhood block club in conjunction with our youth. We continue to screen children for a medical home and up-to-date vaccination status. Needless to say, we are very proud of the program and of the teens that have helped build it from the ground up! We have been able to do this thanks to your support. We hope you continue this great work.

5 FAITH FORMATION Faith Matt-ers By Matt Pozen Director of Parish Faith Formation Faithful Citizenship (April 24, 2016) In Part II of Faithful Citizenship, the US bishops apply the general moral principles which they developed in Part I to various concrete issues facing our nation today. Last week we continued our look at issues under the heading of economic justice by focusing on paragraph 76, which delves into the complicated issue of government support of faith-based initiatives: Faith-based groups deserve recognition and support, not as a substitute for government, but as responsive, effective partners, especially in the poorest communities and countries. The USCCB actively supports conscience clauses, opposes any effort to undermine the ability of faith-based groups to preserve their identity and integrity as partners with government, and is committed to protecting longstanding civil rights and other protections for both religious groups and the people they serve. Government bodies should not require Catholic institutions to compromise their moral convictions to participate in government health or human service programs. Last week I focused on the importance of faith-based groups and other mediating institutions, which have traditionally formed the glue of our American society. The US bishops use the principle of subsidiarity to call government to support and partner with these private organizations, rather than trying to usurp their crucial role in society. The welfare reform of the 1990s did precisely this, shifting the focus to government support of private and faith-based organizations that make up such an important part of our social service safety net in America. Once the government in a pluralistic society like ours starts providing financial support to faith-based organizations, the complicated application of the First Amendment ( separation of church and state ) comes into play. The recent debate over the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate regarding contraceptive coverage simply brings this issue into sharper focus. Catholic-run colleges, hospitals, and social service agencies employ and serve not only Catholics, but people of all religions and no religion. Since the government gives financial support to these organizations, in the form of grants and tax exemptions, does the government have any say in how they operate? Obamacare attempts to move our society toward more universal health insurance coverage, and the HHS mandate classifies contraception and sterilization as basic preventative care that all insurance plans must cover. The only exemption to this mandate is for those religious organizations that primarily employ and serve their own constituents. Thus, Visitation Parish would be exempt from having to provide an insurance plan for its employees that covers contraception and sterilization, but the College of St. Francis and St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet would not. According to Catholic doctrine, it is the bishops, in union with the pope, who act as the official magesterium of the Church, defining Catholic moral convictions. Perhaps in its attempt to respect Catholic moral convictions, the HHS mandate placed less weight on what the bishops have taught and more weight on how lay Catholics are actually living, where statistics say that the vast majority of Catholics do not object to the use of contraception and sterilization within marriage. Let s move on to paragraph 77: Social Security should provide adequate, continuing, and reliable income in an equitable manner for low- and average-wage workers and their families when these workers retire or become disabled, and for the survivors when a wage-earner dies. Currently, the question of how to do this is very pressing, given the dwindling amount of money left in the reserve fund. Due to longer life-spans, the baby-boomer generation entering retirement age, and not enough younger people currently paying into the system (due to declining birth rates), it is simply a matter of arithmetic at this point, unless changes are made soon. In paragraph 80 the bishops move on to the crucial issues of health care: Affordable and accessible health care is an essential safeguard of human life and a fundamental human right. Despite an increase in the number of people insured, millions of Americans still lack health care coverage. Health care coverage remains an urgent national priority. The nation's health care system needs to be rooted in values that respect human dignity, protect human life, respect the principle of subsidiarity, and meet the needs of the poor and uninsured, especially born and unborn children, pregnant women, immigrants, and other vulnerable populations. Employers, including religious groups and family-owned businesses, should be able to provide health care without compromising their moral or religious convictions, and individuals should be able to purchase health care that accords with their faith. The USCCB supports measures to strengthen Medicare and Medicaid. Notice how the bishops proclaim affordable and accessible health care to be a fundamental human right, and urge reform of the nation s health care system. The question of how to do this is at the root of current heated debates. Some (especially Democrats) have argued for a government-run single-payer system, cutting out the market-driven insurance industry, like in Canada and many European countries. Others (especially Republicans) have argued for working within the current insurance system by mandating that all people must purchase health insurance, as a way of spreading the costs more broadly. Ultimately, the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act ( Obamacare ) of 2010 took the later course, adding government aid for those who cannot afford health insurance. Paragraph 80 moves on to support measures to strengthen Medicare and Medicaid. As with Social Security, the future of Medicare is in jeopardy due to rising healthcare costs, an aging population, and fewer young people paying into the system. The question of how to strengthen Medicare and Medicaid so that they are available in the future remains unclear. Page 5

7 A Message for All The Lord appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in front of the exposed Blessed Sacrament and this is how she explained her experience. Jesus Christ, my kind Master, appeared to me. He was a blaze of glory His five wounds shining like five suns, flames issuing from all parts of His human form, especially from His Divine breast which was like a furnace, and which He opened to disclose His utterly affectionate and loveable Heart, the living source of all those flames. It was at this moment that He revealed to me the indescribable wonders of His pure love for mankind: the extravagance to which He d been led for those who had nothing for Him but ingratitude and indifference. This hurts Me more, He told me, than everything I suffered in my passion. Even a little love from them in return and I should regard all that I have done for them as next to nothing, and look for a way of doing still more. But no, all my eager efforts for their welfare meet with nothing but coldness and dislike. Do me the kindness, then you, at least of making up for all their ingratitude, as far as you can. (Consoling the Heart of Jesus) Could you register for one hour a week to make up for the ingratitude? The Chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are some hours that need adoration partners.
