This year s AAA will continue to support the many good works of the ministries throughout the Archdiocese. 3 THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JANUARY 26, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Deaths in the sports world for 2013 included: Henri Rechatin, wire performer who once spent six months occupying a platform outside a bank he was doing publicity work for a kind of St. Simeon Stylites for our times. Stan Musial ( Stan the Man ), St. Louis Cardinals baseball immortal, one of the game s great hitters and fine gentlemen. Leo Durocher, ex-manager of the Dodgers and Giants, said, There is only one way to pitch to Musial under the plate. Musial went to daily Mass and Communion whenever he could. Orville Slutzky, who, with his brother Israel, built New York s Hunter Mountain ski resort, equipping the 4,000-foot mountain with 1,200 snow cannons, night-time lighting and condominiums. He once said that the ski industry is about advertising, promotion and constantly saying, We re the best. He thought it was not that different from a mouthwash campaign. David Deacon Jones, leader of the Los Angeles Rams Fearsome Foursome defensive line that dominated the NFL from Art Donovan, Hall-of-Fame defensive tackle for the Baltimore Colts and then a hilarious character and storyteller on TV. Eddie Bond, a radio host who wouldn t make anybody s list except for the fact that on one of his shows he told a teen-aged Elvis Presley that he d be better off driving a truck than trying to make it in the music business. 3 Ray Harryhausen, famous for his ingenious special effects before the computer era. Jean Stapleton, much-respected actress best known for her role as Archie Bunker s wife Edith in the TV sit-com All in the Family, co- starring Carroll O Connor. Although she played a ditzy (though warm-hearted) traditional housewife, the real Stapleton had strong feminist convictions. James Gandolfini, New Jersey-born actor who was raised in Park Ridge and attended Rutgers. He was working as a bouncer when he took lessons at the Actor s Studio. After landing character-actor roles in films and appearing on Broadway, he got the role of Tony Soprano in HBO s The Sopranos, in which he had to balance his activities as a mob boss and a family man, trying to do so with the help of a shrink. Asked once what he would be doing if he weren t an actor, Gandolfini replied, Probably drinking. Esther Williams, who missed out on the Olympics because of World War II and then became a movie star ( ) in pictures that featured her swimming abilities. When she was asked who her favorite leading man was, she said, The water. Peter O Toole, film star best known for his lead role in Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Film critic Joe Morgenstern recalled a scene in which Lawrence has burned his finger with no indication that it hurt. When a corporal tries to duplicate this, it hurts plenty, and the soldier asks Lawrence what the trick is and Lawrence says, The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts. O Toole had an interesting idea for his grave stone: Many years ago I sent an old, beloved jacket to a cleaner. It was a leather jacket covered in Guinness and blood and marmalade and it came back with a little note pinned to it, and on the note it said, It distresses us to return work which is not perfect. SJS GRAD ON MISSION TO NICARAGUA Saint Joseph School graduate, Sean Reilly, currently a senior at Don Bosco Prep, will be participating in his school s fourth annual trip to Nicaragua, the poorest country in central America and the second poorest in the Western Hemisphere. Last year, the mission built a home for Flor de Maria, a 2-year-old girl, and her family who had been living in a dumpsite. This year, they will be building a house for a family of five and a dining room for the missionary base there. This weekend does not require anything from you but a leap of faith. The rest just happens! 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Matthew 4: Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee When John the Baptist was arrested, Jesus left Nazareth and went to live by the sea. There he met two fishermen, Peter and Andrew. He called to them and asked them to follow him and they did, leaving their boats behind. Then he met two brothers, James and John, who were fishing with their father. He asked them to join him and they left their father to go with him. These men gave up everything to be with Jesus. He wanted them to travel with him and to be his followers. He wanted to teach them and others about God. He told them they would no longer be catching fish in the sea. Instead they would be catching the attention of people as they talked to them about God. And the more they preached about God, the more people came to follow Jesus. Jesus wants us to be like those fishermen. He wants us to follow him and tell others about him. He wants us to help others who are in need; to love God with all our hearts. If we do that, we will be like the Apostles and catch people for Jesus! Jesus left Nazareth for Capernaum by the sea. MISSION OF THE WEEK Bring a friend to church with you and attend the Liturgy of the Word with Children so that your friend will also come to know Jesus and understand his Word. 6
