GIVING THOUGHT In today's Gospel, Jesus tell his disciples, he tells us, that if we want to be his followers then we need to deny ourselves, to take up our cross, and to follow him. In some way, each time we give a sacrificial amount in the Sunday collection or to a charitable cause, we respond to that challenge of Jesus. We deny ourselves to give to others.. We follow the Lord s example of giving. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Classes Begin on September 18 Registrations for 2011/2012 Term are being finalized and classes are being assigned. NOT YET REGISTERED? PLEASE, DO SO IMMEDIATELY NEW STUDENT REGISTRATIONS New students entering the program must be registered parishioners of the parish and present a Baptism Certificate. TRANSFER STUDENTS Transferring students from another parish or school, must present a letter as verification of the grades completed and copies of sacrament certificates. FIRST GRADE STUDENTS Any First Grader who attends a non-catholic School must register for Religious Education. First Grade is required to prepare for First Eucharist in the Second Grade. Please call our office for information and registration. PARISH REGISTRATION is a requirement for admission to the Religious Education Program and the Sacrament Program. If you are not registered with Saint Joseph Parish, please call the rectory ( ) to make an appointment to register with one of the priests. TEACHERS NEEDED! Catechists / Religion Teachers are still needed for many of our classes. Whether you are the parent of a student or a caring parishioner who enjoys working with children, please take a few moments to prayerfully consider giving of your time and talent to serve as a catechist in our religious education program. For further information about how you can help to pass on the faith to a new generation of Catholics, please contact the Religious Education Office ( ). Training and support will be provided. Serving as catechist will not only help the children, it will help you to grow in your relationship with God. OPEN HOUSE AT ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL LOWER SCHOOL & GYM You are invited to visit the Lower School and the Gym, located on Elm Street, this weekend, August 27 & 28, following our Saturday and Sunday Masses. This summer has brought many improvements to both of our parish school buildings. Stop by and inspect the improvements made to your school. You will even receive a free gift! Remember, St. Joseph School belongs to all of us here in the parish.

2 22 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 28, 2011 THE PASTOR S COLUMN SOME WEEKEND! This past weekend, Saturday and Sunday, August 20 & 21, was a busy and exciting one at the parish for a variety of reasons. Last Saturday afternoon, a very large tree, located on a neighbor's property near the lower school, came crashing to the ground. It fell onto the parking area near the side door of the gym. Thank the Lord, there were no cars parked where the tree came down or they would have been badly damaged. Even more importantly, we can be very grateful to God that no one was in the lot. We had men working in the lower school at that time but thankfully they were inside the building. ministry please let me know by speaking to me or sending me an (FatherTom@sjcnj.org). We are especially interested in having folks with musical talent come and join us. If you want to experience what happens during the Liturgy of the Word with Children, just join us one Sunday morning. Speaking of children, last Sunday was the first time our bulletin had a page entitled JUST FOR KIDS. We plan to make this a regular feature of our Sunday bulletin. Last weekend, our upper school on Grand Street was open so that parishioners could view the work that has been done at the school these past two months. The building has a fresh, inviting look. The many people Apparently the severe storm on Friday must have weakened the tree and it simply fell over the next day. Our neighbors, whose tree fell on our property and demolished their fence, were great. They had a tree service on site in a matter of hours and for the next 4 hours or so they cut the tree into pieces and hauled it away in several large dump trucks. After something like that happens, you think twice as you walk under the large, beautiful trees that line the sidewalks. Last Sunday, we resumed our Liturgy of the Word with Children. This special liturgy takes place during our 9 am Sunday Mass. Just before the First Reading, the younger children are invited to come forward and to accompany me or one of the other priests to the lower church/mary's Chapel for their own Liturgy of the Word. There the children listen to the scriptures and a homily more appropriate to their level of understanding. There are songs and prayers that follow the pattern of the Mass in the upper church. The children then are escorted back to the upper church where they join the congregation for the presentation of the gifts. Parents are welcome to accompany their children if they wish. By the way, if you would like to get involved in this who came over were most impressed, as were the mothers pictured above who literally danced for joy! Today, Saturday/Sunday, August 27/28 is open house at the lower school after all our Masses. I encourage you to come and see the transformed look of the school. When you visit the gym, you will think you are standing in a new building! When visiting the school you will also be able to see the location of the greenhouse, our new early childhood program "where little scholars begin to blossom." Love, Fr. Tom Iwanowski

GET READY FOR STEWARDSHIP DAY AT OUR PARISH In response to a large number of suggestions on our inpew survey to offer more programs for our youth, for families and more service to our community, the Pastoral Parish Council is planning a parish wide day of service - Stewardship Day. The event will take place on Saturday, October 22, 2011 in the afternoon. We are planning to offer a variety of projects for people of all ages and all abilities that encompass a full range of service needs...half day projects that address hunger, housing, stewardship of the earth, visiting the elderly, community building and many more. The Parish Pastoral Council envisions this event as the start of an annual happening at Saint Joseph Church. We show our love for God in our love for one another and especially for the least among us. Be a part of that love and join us! Look for more details in the coming weeks. TARGET YOUTH GROUP NEWS TARGET Hang Out Night will return from its summer break this Thursday, September 1, from 7-9 pm in the TARGET Room in the basement of the rectory. Come join us on our NEW night to listen to music, play pool, catch up on things with friends, and pray together. Anyone in high school is invited to come. Hope to see you on Thursday night. JUST FOR KIDS Last Sunday we started a page in the bulletin JUST FOR KIDS. We hope to make this a regular feature in our Sunday Bulletin. If you have any comments or ideas concerning this new feature, us (kids@sjcnj.org) 2012 MASS INTENTIONS 2012 Mass Intentions are being accepted. Please follow these guidelines: Mass Intention requests will only be taken in person. Donation is $10 per request, payable at the time of request. Checks are payable to: St. Joseph Church. Maximum limit of 5 Masses per family at one time. BREAD & WINE INTENTIONS The gift of Bread and/or Wine Intention is a prayerful and beautiful way to remember a loved one or to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary. Bread and Wine Intentions for 2012 are also being accepted. The donation is $40 for each Bread and Wine Intentions are still available for this year. 4 22 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 28, 2011 LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN SUNDAY 9 AM MASS We have resumed the Liturgy of the Word with Children during our 9 am Sunday Mass. During this Mass, children from four years of age and older are invited to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word with one another. After the Introductory Rites of Mass, just before the First Reading begins, the children are invited forward and then are escorted to the Lower Church / Mary s Chapel. There, with adult leaders, the children listen to a more child friendly translation of the scripture readings and then hear a homily geared to their level of understanding. They also join in song and in prayer. The children return to the Upper Church just before the Presentation of Gifts. There they participate in the rest of the Mass with their parents and other parishioners. Consider encouraging your child to participate in this wonderful program that helps them learn and celebrate the Liturgy of the Word. Parents are always welcome to accompany their child. FALL CRAFT FAIR IS COMING & THIRD ANNUAL CHILDREN S TRICKY TRAY It's time to start preparing for our Third Annual Children's Tricky Tray that takes place the day of the Craft Fair. This is a fun-filled event for the children while their parents shop at the Craft Fair. In preparing for this event, we are looking for any donations of new toys, games, sporting equipment, gift cards or anything else that a child would enjoy. If you would like to make a donation, you make drop it off directly at the lower school office or contact Lisa Kane ( ). QUICK JOURNEY BIBLE STUDY Sign up for this eight-part video based series, taught by Jeff Cavins, a noted scripture scholar. This DVD Series provides an excellent introduction and overview of the Bible from a Catholic perspective. The Quick Journey study briefly covers salvation history in a series of eight, half-hour talks that are complemented by group discussion questions and brief assignments for home study. This study makes the complexity of the Bible simple and is a great way to get your feet wet and learn how to begin authentic Catholic Bible study. Our class here at St. Joseph's will meet on Thursday evenings starting September 29 and will be completed before Thanksgiving. A SPECIAL WELCOME MEETING THURSDAY During the month of September, the Great Adventure Bible Series will once again be starting in our parish. Father Roy, who has been assigned as our moderator, would like to start the year with a meeting of all those taking part in our Bible Study Program. This special welcome and introduction will take place in the Lower Church/Mary's Chapel this Thursday, September 1, at 7:30 pm. We hope as many people as possible will attend this informative event to get us all off on the right foot as we being to grow in our appreciation of God s word.
