Look with love on grandparents the world over. Protect them! They are a source of enrichment for families, for the Church and for all of society. Support them! As they grow older, may they continue to be for their families strong pillars of Gospel faith, guardians of noble domestic ideals, living treasuries of sound religious traditions. Make them teachers of wisdom and courage, that they may pass on to future generations the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience. Lord Jesus, help families and society to value the presence and role of grandparents. May they never be ignored or excluded, but always encounter respect and love. Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed in all the years which you give them. Mary, Mother of all the living, keep grandparents constantly in your care, accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage, and by your prayers, grant that all families may one day be reunited in our heavenly homeland, where you await all humanity for the great embrace of life without end. Amen! (Written for Catholic Grandparents Organization in 2008) BREAD & WINE INTENTIONS The bread and wine for the week of September 11, 2016 is offered for the honor and glory of God. 3 TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 On September 11, 2001, a Franciscan priest of St. Francis of Assisi Friary in Manhattan, told Father Mychal Judge that he had just seen a plane crash into one of the World Trade Center towers. Father Judge, a chaplain for the New York City Fire Department, put on his FDNY uniform and drove to the scene. While giving the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to a fallen firefighter and to a woman who worked in the building, a piece of debris struck him in his head, killing him. In his homily at Father Mychal s funeral, his friend, Father Michael Duffy, described what happened next: The firemen took his body and because they respected and loved him so much, they didn t want to leave it in the street. They quickly carried it into a church and not just left it in the vestibule, they went up the center aisle. They put the body in front of the altar. They covered it with a sheet. And on the sheet, they placed his stole and his fire badge. And then they knelt down and thanked God. And then they rushed back to continue their work. A picture of five first responders carrying Fr. Judge s body in a litter ran in newspapers all over America. When the death certificates of the victims were released, his was the first to be issued. Father Judge had made himself available to fire departments from his early years in the priesthood, in which he served in several New Jersey parishes, including Sacred Heart in Rochelle Park and two named after St. Joseph, in West Milford and in East Rutherford. The last also covers Carlstadt, where one day a distraught man held his wife and child at gunpoint in their second-floor apartment. Fr. Mychal hitched up his Franciscan habit for safety and climbed a ladder to successfully plead with the man not to harm his family. Father Duffy, who was assigned to the same parish when this incident occurred and arrived to see its happy outcome, asked himself whether Father Judge had nerves of steel and concluded, Sometimes I think he didn t know any better. But Father Duffy knew what motivated his friend. He inserted himself right where the action was, and then he would somehow bring about peace. He just saw the need, and that s what drove him. Salvatore Cassano, a longtime New York firefighter who went on to serve as the department s Commissioner from , paid tribute to how generously Father Judge had served the men and women of the FDNY: (continued above) FROM THE PASTOR S DESK 3 He touched so many people in the department in ways that people never knew. He was a moving force at the funerals, plaque dedications, memorial services and many other functions at which he officiated, through his powerful yet comforting words. However, it was what Fr. Mychal did behind the scenes that won the hearts of the FDNY s members and their families. If someone was having a problem in their personal lives, he had a way of finding out and showing up at their house ready and able to assist them. He had a way of reaching people at the worst times of their lives and helping them work through their problems. We all knew that Fr. Mychal would be there for us and never question what we did, and that his only concern was how he could help. There were occasions when I would meet Fr. Mychal at a firehouse or get a call from him and hear his voice pleading for leniency for someone who may have broken the rules. It was typical Fr. Mychal, always seeing the good in people and being ready to forgive and forget. We were blessed to have Fr. Mychal Judge as one of our chaplains and doubly blessed to have him there as our shepherd at the World Trade Center on September 11. An early Franciscan document tells of how The brothers way of life among the people should be such that whoever hears or sees them glorifies and praises the heavenly Father and that St. Francis himself fervently desired that he and his brothers should cause God to be praised because of their many good deeds. He used to say to them: As you announce peace with your mouth, make sure that greater peace is in your hearts. Let no one be provoked to anger or scandal through you, but may everyone be drawn to peace, kindness, and harmony through your gentleness. For we have been called to this: to heal the wounded, bind up the broken, and recall the erring. Father Mychal Judge tried to live by that ideal. On this fifteenth anniversary of the terrible events of 9/11 (and of the heroism and sacrifices of many that day), may we pray for all its victims, and for their families and friends, and for all who pledge themselves to our protection and service, and for peace in our troubled world. Msgr. David Hubba

4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ We reverently recall those who were most directly affected by this tragedy those who died, were injured or lost loved ones. In a special way we recall the selfless first responders firefighters, police, chaplains, emergency workers, and other brave persons who risked, and many times lost, their lives in their courageous efforts to save others. In remembering the fateful events of September 11, 2001, may we resolve to put aside our differences and join together in the task of renewing our nation and world. 5 TWENTY FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, August 31, 2016 The mission of every Catholic school is to provide young people with a quality academic education grounded in and centered on authentic Catholic teaching and practices. Catholic education is an important ministry that supports and furthers the mission of the Church. The teaching mission of the Church comes from Christ Himself. All involved in the ministry of Catholic education, regardless of the positions they may have or the duties and responsibilities they shoulder, are charged with forming young people into witnesses to Christ and opening their hearts to the spiritual transformation given by the Holy Spirit. By their words and by their lives, they teach. All are exemplars of the statement attributed to St. Francis: Preach the Gospel. Use words if necessary. Consequently, all involved in the ministry of Catholic education are required to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with the discipline, norms and teachings of the Catholic Church. In acknowledgement of that requirement, they accept and sign a Ministerial Agreement and Code of Conduct. They oblige themselves to promote and foster authentic Catholic beliefs and practices even if they themselves are not Catholic. Every teacher, every administrator, every staff member in our Catholic schools teaches the students with whom he or she interacts about living according to the Faith of the Church. In recent days, there has been much media reporting regarding a guidance counselor at Paramus Catholic who was terminated when it was learned that she was involved in a same-sex union. A same-sex union violates the tenets of the Catholic faith. Every religious organization has the right to promote and define its own identity, mission and message. Every religious (continued above) organization has the right to ensure that people in that religious organization support and promote its beliefs and teachings. When someone involved in Catholic education ministry offers a public counter-witness to Catholic teaching, he or she does not teach the Truth or further the mission of the Church. Such actions can create confusion and uncertainty in the moral formation of the young people he or she encounters. When that happens, the Church must be free to take corrective steps to maintain the identity and the integrity of her mission. This right is protected by the United States Constitution as well as federal and state law. With respect to its teachers and administrators, the Church acts on facts. When credible evidence comes to its attention that an employee is violating the tenets of the Catholic faith, it is compelled to investigate and take appropriate action. In the matter now before the court, certain facts were made known to school and Archdiocesan officials. It seems that many have equated, mistakenly, the Church s position of welcoming sinners (for we are all sinners) with the notion that we accept teaching and lifestyles contrary to the principles of our faith that can create scandal in our Church. Much has been said in recent days about respect, diversity, and mercy. I agree that these qualities are important to the mission of the Catholic Church, especially through the ministry of Catholic education. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity, to be given respect, and to be shown the qualities of mercy. For decades I have taught and written that the Church welcomes everyone and invites everyone to participate in the life of the Church to the degree that they honestly can, while sincerely respecting the teachings of the Church. The invitation to join in the life of the Church does not include an invitation to alter or redefine what the Church believes and teaches, nor is it an invitation to allow others to define the identity, mission and message of the Church. Even Jesus recognized that some people could not or would not accept His teaching. He was saddened when they walked away from Him, but He never altered His teaching. Nor shall we do so today. With kindest personal regards, I am, Sincerely in the Lord, Most Reverend John J. Myers Archbishop of Newark STAINED GLASS WINDOWS UPDATE The work to preserve our beautiful stained glass windows, funded by your generous contributions to the We Are Living Stones capital campaign, has been proceeding right on schedule with no disruption to our worship schedule. Facilities Director Tom Meli reports that Bovard Studios removed 8 windows of differing sizes and took them to Iowa as templates. They are now prepared to repair all the rest of our windows ON SITE. That means that they will be able to replace the rusted framing, 5 repair any existing damage to the glass and polish the windows so they will gleam without taking the windows to another location. Bovard plans to work on two windows at a time and replace them before moving on to the rest. Work will stop for funerals or other liturgical events. All work should take place between mid-october and mid- November with everything finished before Advent. Thank you for your generosity and for your patience as we work to preserve the beautiful windows that generations of Saint Joseph parishioners have come to know and love. Now they will shine with the light of Jesus for generations to come.
