JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ 3 MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION NEEDED The Worship Office of the Archdiocese will sponsor a training session for those who may be interested in serving as Special Ministers of Communion. The session will take place Saturday morning, April 14, at the Archdiocesan Center in Newark. We will leave our parish at 8 am and return by 1 pm. If you have an interest in serving as a minister of Holy Communion at our Sunday Masses or are interested in bringing Communion to the sick and homebound, please contact Father Roy (FatherRoy@sjcnj.org) ( ). Those currently in this ministry are also invited to attend. It is always worthwhile for those in any ministry to review the basics and deepen their appreciation of their role in the liturgy. A Look at the Results of Our Capital Campaign Four Years Later In 2008 Saint Joseph Parish began a 5-year Capital Campaign to repair and restore our parish facilities, many of which had been damaged by the terrible storms and flooding of 1999, 2005 and With the help of The Cunneen Company, a national Catholic fundraising organization with over 25 years of experience, our parish set out to achieve a goal of $1,000,000 in order to restore, to build, to continue our legacy. Because of the amazing generosity of our parishioners, we not only reached that goal, we exceeded it! In the four years since the campaign began, we have collected a total of $1,368,426 in pledges, matching gifts and interest income. Saint Joseph Parish is deeply indebted to you for your unselfish support of our parish s needs, and as members of the Saint Joseph Parish Finance Council, we extend a most heartfelt Thank You! EASTER SUNDAY NEW LIFE NEW HOPE On behalf of the entire parish staff, Father Raul, Father Roy, Arlene Kennedy, Anthony Armando, Colette Vail, Angela Gussoni, Monroe Quinn, and Heath Winborn let me begin by wishing you a Joyous Easter Season. I hope that during this Easter Season you truly experience the presence of the Risen Lord in your life not only when we gather for Mass but also as you go about your daily life. As Christians we believe the Lord is risen and alive and with us. We are reminded of that each time the priest says The Lord be with you. Also, let me take this opportunity to thank you for joining us this Easter for the celebration of Mass. Your being here proclaims your belief in the Resurrection your belief that life is stronger than death, that the light cannot be overcome by darkness, and that hope is more powerful than despair. How the Money Has Been Spent To date, your donations have been used for an impressive number of capital improvements on the 8 different parish buildings that comprise our campus. (Capital campaign funds may not be used for general operating expenses. They are restricted to building projects, capital expenditures and systems repairs.) Some of the projects that have been completed in the Church have included fixing our beautiful Spanish tile roof, repairing the water-damaged ceilings of our sacristies, purchasing a new generator, and grinding and polishing the terrazzo floors throughout the entire church and entrance foyer. (A separate July 2007 donor initiative made prior to the start of the Capital Campaign resulted in $196,925 in contributions to restore Mary s Chapel in the lower church. That work included new electrical wiring, ceramic tile flooring, brand new walls, refinished pews, and new restrooms.) Here at Saint Joseph Parish there are signs of hope and growth all around us. Certainly Forward in Faith 2016, our parish s strategic plan for the future, is a sign of that hope. Only those who have hope plan for the future. Our Implementation Committee is overseeing the plan and is working to make certain that the recommendations in the plan become realities in our parish over the coming years. Another sign of our hope in the future is our Parish Capital Campaign. I am happy to present you with an up to date report on how the funds donated in the campaign have been used. That report, which was prepared by a subcommittee of our Parish Finance Council, appears to the right of my column and is continued on the following page. I think you will be impressed, I know I was. I would like to thank all those who have made, and continue to make, contributions to this Capital Campaign. Your generosity has helped to make good things happen. In the Rectory, which serves as both our priests residence and our parish business offices, floors have been refinished, air conditioning units replaced, furniture purchased, leaks repaired, and a computer network established (which also serves our Religious Education Office). 5 EASTER SUNDAY APRIL 8, 2012 continued from previous page Capital Campaign Report A Look at the Results of Our Capital Campaign Four Years Later In our School building on Grand Street, a security camera system was added, a new flat roof was built, the outside entrance area was upgraded with new steps, new railings, an apron of Belgian blocks and new concrete sidewalks and curbing. The Brothers Residence on Grand Street received a new roof, and a new boiler was purchased for the rental property on Harrison Street. The historic Parish Life Center on Grove Street has required extensive renovation due to its advanced age. Originally built in 1819, it was the homestead of a branch of the Demarest family, our area s first settlers. This lovely building, with its gambrel roof and exterior walls of Flemish bond brick façade and evenly cut sandstone, has served our parish since 1955 as a convent, as staff housing, as a meeting place for parish ministries, and as a site for student instruction, but time has taken its toll. In order to permit occupancy once again, it has been necessary to bring the PLC up to current building, fire and safety codes. To ensure structural integrity, beams had to be reinforced. Both the electrical system and the plumbing had to be updated. A sprinkler system and a wired alarm system also had to be installed. Because of the capital improvements made, this architectural gem will once again provide staff housing and beautiful meeting spaces for our many adult parish groups and is sure to become the heart of our parish life. Finally, all the parking lots on parish grounds have been completely repaved and a new retaining wall along the Harrison Street side of the property and new walkways around the Rectory have been constructed to offer increased safety for all who use them. Looking to the Future Because of the careful management of your donations, $330,253 of capital improvement funds remain available, even with the extensive number of projects already completed. However as all homeowners know, the work never ends. Future projects at Saint Joseph may include additional needed repairs to the school buildings, new carpeting in the Rectory reception area, the possible air conditioning of the gym in order to make the space usable throughout the summer months, and more. 6 ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. John Chapter 20, verses 1-9 THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE, LET US REJOICE, LET US BE GLAD! Last week we learned that on Good Friday Jesus Christ was put to death on the cross by some very bad people. That was a very sad day. But today, we celebrate with joy because Jesus rose from the dead. It was very early in the morning on the first Easter Sunday when Mary Magdalene went to the tomb where Jesus was buried. She went there with John and Peter. What they found shocked and amazed them. The stone that blocked the entrance to the tomb was rolled away and the body of Jesus was gone. All that was left were the strips of linen cloth that had covered his body. When Mary Magdalene, Peter and John saw the empty tomb, they remembered that Jesus had spoke to them about his death and about his resurrection from the dead. They came to believe Jesus was alive, and they knew for sure that was the case when the Risen Lord came to them later that day. Jesus died and rose from the dead so that we could have a new life with him that would last forever! NOTE TO PARENTS The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church/mary s Chapel for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's Good News to be exciting for the younger members of our parish family. MISSION OF THE WEEK Wish everyone you see a Happy Easter by saying, Happy Easter, Jesus is Risen, Alleluia! Let them know the true reason we are celebrating Easter. 6
