GIVING THOUGHT You shall love your neighbor as yourself. That is the command that Jesus gives us in today s Gospel. (Matthew 22:34-40) Just consider the time, the effort, the attention, and the money we spend in loving and caring for ourselves. As Christians, we are challenged to give a portion of our time, our talent, and our treasure to those in need and to God s Church. In doing so, we show love for our neighbor and love for God. How much we give should have some relationship to how much we spend on ourselves. After all, the standard Jesus sets is love your neighbor as yourself. JOIN US FOR BREAKFAST TODAY, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23, 8:30 AM TO 1:30 PM LOWER SCHOOL GYM Join us after Mass today for the annual all you can eat breakfast sponsored by New Hope for Children, a non-profit organization helping children in need. This is the first time the breakfast is being held in the lower school gym. Food will be served from until 1:30 pm when the Tricky Tray winners and winners of the 50/50 raffle will be announced. Admission for the full buffet breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, and our famous Social Concerns Crumb Cake or dessert, is still only $6 for adults and just $3 for children under age 7. This event sends a message of love and caring to the orphans of Ukraine. Many immediate needs of the children are met through your participation in this annual event. REPORTING ABUSE The Archdiocese takes very seriously any allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, religious, and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at ( ). 2

3 30 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 23, 2011 SPECIAL SERIES ON THE MASS This is the fourth of a series of articles designed to help us grow in our appreciation of the Mass, and to help us prepare for the coming changes in the liturgy. Previous articles may be found on our parish website (sjcnj.org) under bulletins. PART FOUR: PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS Some people say that taxes are too high. Others say that taxes are too low. Some people say that we should increase taxes on millionaires. Others that we should scrap the present tax code and replace it with a flat tax or consumption tax. Everyone has an opinion when it comes to taxes. In last Sunday s Gospel, the Pharisees, who opposed cooperating with the hated Romans, and the Herodians, who were much more willing to go along to get ahead, ask Jesus, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man...tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Placed in a situation where any answer he gave would have been considered the wrong answer by one group or the other, Jesus simply says, "Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God." People have interpreted those words of Jesus to mean that Christians have an obligation to pay taxes to fund the government. According to the present tax code, they are required to render to "Caesar" anywhere from 10% to 39.6% of their taxable income. When it comes to the words of Jesus about repaying God, some Christians believe that followers of Christ are required to tithe, to give God 10% of their income. Other Christians lower that number to 5%. And according to national statistics, Catholics bring it down even more. As a group, we Catholics give only about 1%. Yet if you look at what Jesus says in the Gospels, he gives no percentage. Instead Jesus simply says "Repay...to God what belongs to God." Such repaying to God begins with us considering what belongs to God and what belongs to us. When we do, we realize that all our possessions, including life itself, are blessings from God. They are given to us only for a time. Our lease on those goods ends when we die. While we have those blessings we are to use them to make a positive difference in our world and we are to offer them to God as a way of acknowledging they are truly his. The government requires us to pay a certain percentage in taxes. Pay that and the rest of our money is ours to use for whatever we want,. Jesus tells us that God sets no tax rate. God simply tells us to give him what is his. We do that repaying to God in a particular way at Mass during the Presentation of the Gifts, which begins with 3 the collection and concludes with the Prayer Over the Offerings. As the collection basket comes before us at Mass, you and I are given the opportunity to do what Jesus speaks about in the Gospel, namely, to repay to God what God has given to us. We are challenged to be generous, self-sacrificing, and unselfish. We are challenged be good stewards who support the Church that is ours by Baptism. We are challenged to recognize that all we possess is a gift from God. Our response to the collection, also makes us aware that money can easily control us. Most of us find it hard to part with our money. If that were not the case, there would not be so many single dollars bills in the collection baskets of our churches. It is surprising how often Jesus spoke of money in the Gospels. For example, Jesus told the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. Jesus warned that the rich would only enter the Kingdom of God with the greatest of difficulty. Jesus praised the poor widow who gave all she had to the temple. Jesus spoke out about gaining the whole world, and losing ourselves in the process. And Jesus spoke of giving to God what belongs to God. Jesus knew that money can take over the human heart and crowd out the place that belongs to God. Our response in the collection is a good indicator of the control that money, that material possessions, can have over us. In addition to our monetary gifts, bread and wine are also brought forward to the altar during this part of the Mass. That bread and wine represent our selfoffering to God. As they are brought forward we might consider what acts of kindness, love, forgiveness, and self-sacrifice, what gifts of time and talent from the past week, could be represented by that bread and wine. As these gifts are placed on the altar, the priest acknowledges that the gifts we offer come from God as he prays Blessed are you Lord God of all creation, through your goodness we have this bread / this wine to offer. The priest might equally pray that same prayer over our financial offerings. "Blessed are you, Lord God, of all creation, through your goodness, we have this money to offer, which human hands have earned through the talents and opportunities you have given us. Blessed are you Lord God of all creation. In this day, everyone has an opinion on taxes, and an opinion on giving to the Church. And so does Jesus. "Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God." That s the Lord's opinion! 2011 Rev. Thomas B. Iwanowski

4 ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ RECONCILIATION SERVICE FOR GRADE 4, OCTOBER 24 BAPTISMS AT OUR PARISH The following children were baptized during our 12 Noon Mass last Sunday, October 16. Please pray for these new members of our Church and of our Parish Family. This Monday, October 24, there will be a special Reconciliation Service for Students in Grade 4 of the Religious Ed Program. The service will begin at 4 pm in the Upper Church. Please make every effort to attend. Parents/Guardians are welcomed and encouraged to attend. TARGET NEWS TARGET, our high school youth program for those in grades 9 through 12, sponsors a Hang Out Night that takes place each Thursday from 7 to 9 pm in the TARGET Room. CHILDCARE ON SUNDAY DURING MASS The Good News for Little Ones program, for children 6 months through 4 years of age, provides a safe and comfortable environment for children while their parents attend our 9 am or 10:30 am Sunday Mass. Good News for Little Ones takes place in the greenhouse classroom located in the Saint Joseph Lower School on Elm Street. Caitlyn Alexandra Meehan, daughter of Bill & Andrea THINKING ABOUT CHRISTMAS BEFORE HALLOWEEN? It may seem too early to be thinking about Christmas even before Halloween has arrived. Yet we need to begin planning for our parish s Giving Tree Project. It is a parish tradition to share the blessings and joys of Christmas with those in need through our Giving Tree Project. In past years, our parish has helped families from Catholic Charities, families from the Hudson County area through Our Lady of Fatima Parish, in North Bergen; and residents at Covenant House and the Bergen Regional Medical Center. We are living in a time of hardship. The people of St. Joseph Parish have always shown what it means to live the teachings of Jesus and have expressed the true meaning of Christmas through The Giving Tree. The Giving Tree Project takes preparation before the trees with the tags are displayed in the church. To run this effort smoothly, it takes one person to oversee the effort and be in contact with the agencies, and other volunteers to handle preparing the gift tags; placing the tags on the trees and replenishing them; gathering the gifts from the church to a collection area; and preparing them for pick up by the various agencies. This inner city school is sponsored by Resurrection Parish, our sister parish in Jersey City. During the dinner, a VISION OF PEACE AWARD will be presented to Phil DeRosa, the Chairperson of our Parish Pastoral Council. Phil will be accepting this award on behalf of the Council and our entire parish. Tickets to the event are $75 per person; a table of 10 is $700. It is always worthwhile for those in any ministry to review the basics and deepen their appreciation of their important ministry.
