Adults inquiring about the Catholic Church with a desire to become Catholic are invited to call the parish office for information about the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Please arrange for the obligatory preparation session by calling the parish office. Pastoral Care of the Sick: The Holy Eucharist and the Anointing of the Sick are available to the sick and shut-ins upon request. First Penance, First Eucharist, Confirmation: Children are expected to receive a Catholic upbringing in their family life, to worship regularly at Sunday Mass, and to receive ongoing religious education in the years preceding the reception of these sacraments. Matrimony: Specific times are set for the celebration of marriage during the year. To allow ample time for preparation, please contact the parish office at least one year before the intended wedding date. PRAY AND FAST FOR VOCATIONS Almighty and eternal God, in Your unfailing love You provide ministers for Your Church. We pray for those whom You call to serve the Church as priests. Inspire in them a generous response. Grant them the courage and vision to serve Your people. May their lives and service call Your people to respond to the presence of Your Spirit among us that, faithful to the Gospel and hope of Jesus the Christ, we may: announce glad tidings to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives, set prisoners free, and renew the face of the earth. Amen. Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenseless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this. Precisely because this involves the internal consistency of our message about the value of the human person, the Church cannot be expected to change her position on this question It is not progressive to try to resolve problems by eliminating a human life -Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium # A PRO-LIFE PRAYER FOR OUR PUBLIC OFFICIALS Lord God, Author of Life and Source of Eternal Life, move the hearts of all our public officials and especially our President to fulfill their responsibilities worthily and well to all those entrusted to their care. Help them in their special leadership roles, to extend the mantle of protection to the most vulnerable, especially the defenseless unborn whose lives are threatened with extermination by an indifferent society. Guide all public officials by Your wisdom and grace to cease supporting any law that fails to protect the fundamental good that is human life itself, which is a gift from God and parents. You are the Protector and Defender of the lives of the innocent unborn. Change the hearts of those who compromise the call to protect and defend life. Bring our Nation to the values that have made us a great Nation, a society that upholds the value of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. Mary, the Mother of the living, help us to bear witness to the Gospel of Life with our lives and our laws, through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

3 SUNDAY READINGS First Reading - Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-11 Second Reading - Ti 2: 11-14, 3: 4-7 Gospel - Luke 3: 15-16, Called to Serve For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, He came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and Heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are My beloved Son. Jesus was beginning His public life of teaching and service. Soon He would start calling others to join Him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, He announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, Who is Lord of all. FOUNDATION FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION Special Collection The second collection this weekend is for the Foundation for Catholic Education, which provides scholarships to financially-deserving children attending a Diocese of Metuchen Catholic elementary or high school. Over 100 deserving children are enrolled in one of our schools today thanks to your generous support of last year s collection. Hundreds of families, hoping to give their children the gift of a Catholic school education, will seek financial assistance from the FCE Scholarship Program for the school year. Your gift will send a child to Catholic school, changing a life forever! Please be as generous as your means allow. Gregory Uhrig on three consecutive Wednesdays (January 23 & 30 and February 6), from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at St. John Neumann Pastoral Center, 146 Metlars Lane, Piscataway, for an exploration of the enduring power of Vatican II s teachings in our day. The course is based on a video series entitled Vatican II and the Church of the Third Millennium with Dr. Richard R. Gaillardetz, Ph.D., this course will offer an opportunity to reflect on and discuss the challenges facing the Catholic Church today. There is no charge to attend and no registration is required. Baptism is a grace which we accept and in which we grow through a life of perseverance in prayer and worship in body, mind, and spirit. Eternal Father, Y ou have given us Y our onlybegotten Son to take our nature upon Him, and revealed Him to us at His Baptism in the River Jordan. Grant that we, who have been born again of water and the Holy Spirit, and made Your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by Your Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour, Who is alive with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. ANNUAL DIOCESAN RESPECT LIFE MASS & PRO-VITA AWARDS Bishop James F. Checchio will celebrate the Annual Diocesan Respect for Life Mass at noon on Sunday, January 20, at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, 548 Main Street, Metuchen. At this time, the Bishop will present the 2019 Pro-Vita Awards. This year s recipients: Patricia Daly, a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church in Annandale, who is being recognized for her service in promoting the sanctity of human life in the Parish and the local community; Carolyn Glodek, a parishioner at St. John Vianney Parish in Colonia, who is very involved with Life Choices Resource Center in Metuchen, helping young women facing unplanned pregnancies to choose life; and William Tevald, a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church in Annandale, who is heavily involved with setting up the St. Anne s Center in Phillipsburg, a home for women who are pregnant and homeless.
