Third Sunday in Lent February 28, :15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Cover Symbol No. 4 - Burning Bush Explanation of the Cover Symbol Since the time of the Reformation, the burning bush has been a symbol of the Church. The Latin words are taken from Exodus 3:2 and read...and yet it was not consumed. In one of his letters Samuel Rutherford reminds his correspondent, The bush has been burning these five thousand years, and no man yet saw the ashes of that fire. Faith Presbyterian Church Presbyterian Church in America 620 South Shirley, Tacoma, Washington Ministers: Robert S. Rayburn, Richard H. DeMass, Steven A. Nicoletti fpc@faithtacoma.org Third Sunday in Lent February 28, 2016 Upon entering the sanctuary please maintain silence for the sake of the congregation s preparation for worship, and please make sure electronic devices are off or using silent mode. Prelude Prelude In F (Homage to J. S. B.)....Gordon Young ( ) Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips. Psalm 63:1-5 (ESV) Call to Worship 8:15 a.m. Service *Hymn of Praise to God Lord, With Glowing Heart I d Praise Thee No :00 a.m. Service
Choir: O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home. Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defense is sure. Before the world in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting thou art God, To endless years the same. A thousand ages in thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. Time, like an ever rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day. Kyrie eleison. (Lord, have mercy.) Christe eleison. (Christ, have mercy.) Kyrie eleison. Congregation: O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Still be our guide while troubles last And our eternal home. Choir: And our eternal home. Amen. Isaac Watts/John Wykoff +Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer Almighty God, who are rich in mercy to all those who call upon You; hear us as we come to You humbly confessing our sins and transgressions, and imploring Your mercy and forgiveness. We have broken Your holy laws by our deeds and by our words, and by the sinful affections of our hearts. We confess before You
our disobedience and ingratitude, our pride and willfulness; and all our failures and shortcomings toward You and toward our fellow men. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; and of Your great goodness grant that we may hereafter serve and please You in newness of life; through the merit and mediation of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Assurance of Pardon Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:25 *Confession of Faith Q. What do you believe concerning the forgiveness of sins? A. I believe that God, because of Christ's atonement, will never hold against me any of my sins nor my sinful nature which I need to struggle against all my life. Rather, in his grace God grants me the righteousness of Christ to free me forever from judgment. Heidelberg Catechism No. 56. *Hymn of Faith in Christ What Wondrous Love Is This No. 261 Unison Reading of God s Law I Thessalonians 4: 1-12(ESV p. 987) Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings Meditation on Adoro te devote..jack C. Amen, Amen. *Congregational Petitions Scripture Lesson Acts 11: 1 18 (ESV pp ) Sermon Witness! *Hymn The Ends of All the Earth Shall Hear No. 368 (Psalm 22: 27 30) *Benediction +Silent Prayer Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14 (ESV) We walk by faith and not by sight; No gracious words have we to hear From Him who spoke as non e er spoke, But we believe Him near. We may not touch His hands and side,
Nor follow where His feet have trod, But in His promise we rejoice, And cry My Lord and my God! Help then, Lord, our unbelief! And may now our faith abound. Let us call on Thee when Thou art near And seek where thou art found. That when our life of faith is done, In realms of clearer, glorious light We may behold Thee as Thou art With full and endless sight. I need no other argument, I need no other plea; It is enough that Jesus died, And that He died for me. Henry Alford and Lidie H. Edmunds/Joseph M. He is fit to be tied; get ready for both barrels! The Lord s Supper will be served. The Lord s Supper is observed every Lord s Day at Faith Presbyterian Church alternating between the morning and the evening services. The officers have wanted to retain evening communion not only because all the Lord s Suppers explicitly mentioned in the New Testament were in the evening, but as well to reinforce the importance of Sunday evening worship as a regular part of the observance of the Lord s Day. Learn more about Safe Families! Todd Hobart, Safe Families for Children coordinator, will be with us during the Sunday school hour on March 13 th. He will meet with interested folk to talk in more depth about the variety of ways we can all participate in the Safe Families ministries. Please contact Andrew Milton to indicate your interest in attending this informational meeting. Genesis 39 Sunday School Class Begins Today What is Genesis 39? The name Genesis 39 was adopted from the account of Joseph refusing the advancement of Potiphar s wife, avoiding her seduction and ultimately fleeing. We believe this encapsulates the allure of sexual temptation and the most appropriate antidote. The purposes of Genesis 39 are the following: to promote a biblical understanding and practice of male sexuality, to raise awareness of the ever-present dangers of sexual temptations and raise necessary barriers, and to assist those embroiled in sexual struggles by befriending and speaking the power and hope of the Gospel into their lives.
Adult Sunday School Genesis 39 (Sanctuary) All men of the congregation (5 th graders to senior citizens) will meet in the sanctuary today for the first monthly Sunday school class sponsored by the new ministry of our congregation we are calling Genesis 39. Women s Compliment Class to Genesis 39 (North Half of DeSoto Hall) All women (high schoolers and older) are invited to join us in DeSoto Hall for the compliment class to Genesis 39. MUSICNotes Evening Prelude: Come at 5:40 this evening to enjoy the fourth installment of selections from Mendelssohn s Elijah in anticipation of the full presentation on April 24 th. Circle the date: Sunday evening, April 24, 5:30 pm, FPC sanctuary, Elijah. Soloists include our own Heidi Bone and Daniel Roberts, as well as Courtney (Rayburn) Dey and Ross Hauck. Accompanists are our own Maddie Lee, piano, and Evangeline (Rayburn) Wykoff, organ. You won't want to miss it! Now here's a good idea: Prepare yourself for the thrill of hearing Elijah on April 24th by reading the Elijah dramatic narrative that begins in 1 Kings 17. Choristers rehearsals are now underway each Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. This choir for treble voices (at least age 7) prepares music for worship services under the direction of Mrs. Melissa McMillan. The Choristers will next sing in the worship service on March 6 th. College & Career Group Our college & career group meets at the Aown s home on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month: once for a social gathering and once for a small-group-style gathering.
