1 Lord s Day October 15, :15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Cover Symbol No. 3 - Jesus Christ Victor Explanation of the Cover Symbol In the Greek language of the early Christian era abbreviations were typically the first and last letters of words, often with a superscription to indicate the missing letters. IC is a standard abbreviation of IHCOYC, the Greek Jesus, XC the abbreviation of XPICTOC, Christ; NIKA means He conquers. The symbol then reads Jesus Christ Conquers by the Cross or Jesus Christ Victor. FAITH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Presbyterian Church in America 620 South Shirley Tacoma, Washington Ministers: Robert S. Rayburn, Richard H. DeMass, Steven A. Nicoletti fpc@faithtacoma.org Lord s Day October 15, 2017 Upon entering the sanctuary please maintain silence for the sake of the congregation's preparation for worship, and please make sure electronic devices are off or using silent mode. Prelude Fugue in D minor... J. S. Bach ( ) Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips. Psalm 63:1-5 (ESV) Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God All Creatures of Our God and King No Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer
2 Holy Father, we come before you with humble hearts, confessing our sins. We have chased after the vanities of this world and have wandered from our heart s true home; and, forgetful of you, the living God, we have burned the incense of the soul before false gods that cannot deliver. Deal not with us as we deserve, but pardon our foolish and perverse ways. Of your clemency wash us clean from all sin, for no adversity shall harm us if no wickedness has dominion over us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [The Leonine Sacramentary (c.6 th /7 th cent.)] Assurance of Pardon The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin. Exodus 34:6-7 (ESV) *Confession of Faith Q. But why are you called a Christian? A. Because by faith I am a member of Christ and so I share in his anointing. I am anointed to confess his name, to present myself to him as a living sacrifice of thanks, to strive with a good conscience against sin and the devil in this life, and afterward to reign with Christ over all creation for all eternity. Heidelberg Catechism No. 32 *Hymn of Faith in Jesus Christ O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus! No. 535 Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings Voluntary in D major (Adagio)... John Stanley ( ) O Lord of heaven, and earth, and sea, To thee all praise and glory be; How shall we show our love to thee, Giver of all? For souls redeemed, for sins forgiven, For means of grace and hopes of heaven, Father, what can to thee be given, Who givest all? We lose what on ourselves we spend, We have as treasure without end Whatever, Lord, to thee we lend, Who givest all. To thee, from whom we all derive Our life, our gifts, our power to give: O may we ever with thee live, Giver of all! Amen. *Congregational Petitions and the Lord s Prayer Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV) Scripture Lesson Genesis 46:1-34 (ESV pp )
3 Sermon The Long Wait Begins The Lord s Supper The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. Lord Jesus, the burdens of my life are too great for me. I know that my heaviest burden is my own sin. My sin has made me estranged from God and it is too great for me to carry. You say to all sinners, including me, Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. These are the words my guilty conscience longs for. Help me Lord Jesus to understand and believe your loving promise that I can have rest from my sins. And even more, that I can know you and have eternal life. Amen. Come, ye disconsolate, where-e er ye languish; Come to the mercy seat, fervently kneel; Here bring your wounded hearts, here tell your anguish; Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal. Joy of the desolate, light of the straying, Hope of the penitent, fadeless and pure; Here speaks the comforter, tenderly saying, Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot cure. Here see the bread of life; see waters flowing, Forth from the throne of God, pure from above; Come to the feast of love; come ever knowing Earth has no sorrow but Heaven can remove. Text: Thomas Moore/Tune: Will James Hymn From out the Depths I Cry, O Lord, to Thee No. 552 (Psalm 130) Reading of Scripture Psalm 40:1-5, (ESV pp ) *Hymn Sometimes a Light Surprises No. 621 *Benediction +Silent Prayer Author of life divine, who hast a table spread, Furnished with mystic wine and everlasting bread,
4 Preserve the life thyself hast given, And feed and train us up for heaven. Our needy souls sustain with fresh supplies of love, Till all Thy life we gain, and all thy fullness prove, And, strengthened by thy perfect grace, Behold without a veil thy face. --Charles Wesley Postlude *Congregation standing +The congregation is invited to kneel CCLI License # Teach me thy way, O Lord, That I may walk in thy truth; Unite my heart to fear thy name.
