THE PARISH CHURCH OF ALL SAINTS UPPER TWICKENHAM REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY REQUIEM FOR THE FALLEN IN WAR

2

ENTRANCE HYMN O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home: Under the shadow of thy throne, thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defense is sure. Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same. A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone; short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away; they fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be thou our guide while troubles last, and our eternal home! 3

The Priest greet the assembly, the response is always: PENITENTIAL RITE Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. A brief pause for silence follows. Then all recite together I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. 4

The Priest then pronounces the words of Absolution. May almighty God have mercy on us, Forgive us our sins, And bring us to everlasting life. Amen. KYRIE ELEISON THE COLLECT Almighty ever-living God, who rule both the living and the dead and are merciful to all, we humbly beseech you, that those for whom we pour out our prayers may obtain pardon for their sins through your tender mercy, rejoicing together, blessed in your sight, and praising you without end. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 5

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD SIT First reading Wisdom A reading from the Book of Wisdom The souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God, no torment shall ever touch them. In the eyes of the unwise, they did appear to die, their going looked like a disaster, their leaving us, like annihilation; but they are in peace. If they experienced punishment as men see it, their hope was rich with immortality; slight was their affliction, great will their blessings be. God has put them to the test and proved them worthy to be with him; he has tested them like gold in a furnace, and accepted them as a holocaust. When the time comes for his visitation they will shine out; as sparks run through the stubble, so will they. They shall judge nations, rule over peoples, and the Lord will be their king for ever. They who trust in him will understand the truth, those who are faithful will live with him in love; for grace and mercy await those he has chosen. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. 6

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Second reading Romans 5:5-11 A reading from the Letter to the Romans Hope is not deceptive, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given us. We were still helpless when at his appointed moment Christ died for sinful men. It is not easy to die even for a good man though of course for someone really worthy, a man might be prepared to die but what proves that God loves us is that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Having died to make us righteous, is it likely that he would now fail to save us from God s anger? When we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, we were still enemies; now that we have been reconciled, surely we may count on being saved by the life of his Son? Not merely because we have been reconciled but because we are filled with joyful trust in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have already gained our reconciliation. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. 7

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION STAND Alleluia, alleluia, Alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, Alleluia! THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 11:25-30 Jesus exclaimed, I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light. 8

THE PROFESSION OF FAITH I STAND believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9

THE PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL Lord hear us, Lord, Graciously hear us. Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer 10 Be pleased to hear us Lord, we ask you, hear our prayer. Let us pray to the Lord Lord, have mercy Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. HYMN AT THE PREPARATION OF THE ALTAR L ights' abode, celestial Salem, vision whence true peace doth spring, brighter than the heart can fancy, mansion of the highest King; O how glorious are the praises which of thee the prophets sing! There for ever and for ever alleluia is outpoured; for unending, for unbroken is the feast-day of the Lord; all is pure and all is holy that within thy walls is stored. There no cloud nor passing vapour dims the brightness of the air; endless noonday, glorious noonday, from the Sun of suns is there; there no night brings rest from labour, for unknown are toil and care.

O how glorious and resplendent, fragile body, shalt thou be, when endued with heavenly beauty, full of health, and strong, and free, full of vigour, full of pleasure that shall last eternally! Now with gladness, now with courage, bear the burden on thee laid, that hereafter these thy labours may with endless gifts be paid, and in everlasting glory thou with bright be arrayed. Laud and honour to the Father, laud and honour to the Son, laud and honour to the Spirit, ever Three and ever One, consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run. Pray, brethren, that this my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church. 11

The celebrant continues with the Eucharistic prayer until we sing: We all KNEEL as the Celebrant continues with the Eucharistic Prayer. After the Lord s words are said over the bread and the cup we use the following response: When we eat this bread, and drink this cup We proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, Until you come in glory, until you come in glory. At the end of the prayer we sing or say: Amen. 12

COMMUNION RITE THE LORD S PRAYER STAND At the Saviour s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say: Our Father, Who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy Name;! Thy kingdom come,! Thy will be done,! on earth as it is in heaven.! Give us this day our daily bread,! and forgive us our trespasses,! as we forgive those who trespass against us;! and lead us not into temptation,! but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour Jesus Christ. For the Kingdom, the power and the glory are yours Now and for ever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles: peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins but on the faith of your Church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. 13

AGNUS DEI KNEEL COMMUNION Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the lamb. 14

Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. When offered the Host or when given a blessing the response is: Amen. DURING HOLY COMMUNION L et all mortal flesh keep silence! And with fear and trembling stand;! Ponder nothing earthly minded,! For with blessing in his hand! Christ our God to earth descending! Comes our homage to demand. King of kings yet born of Mary,! As of old on earth he stood,! Lord of lords in human vesture,! In the body and the blood,!he will give to all the faithful! His own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven! Spreads it vanguard on the way! As the Light of Light, descending! From the realms of endless day, That the powers of Hell may vanish As the darkness clears away. At his feet the six winged seraph,! Cherubim with sleepless eye,! Veil their faces to the presence! As with ceaseless voice they cry:!" Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, Lord Most High!" 15

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION STAND HYMN FOR PROCESSION TO WAR MEMORIAL T hine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; endless is the victory, thou o'er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son, Endless is the vict'ry, thou o'er death hast won. Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let the Church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing; for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting. No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life; life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife; make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love: bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above. THE ACT OF REMEMBRANCE G od save our gracious Queen! Long live our noble Queen! God save the Queen! Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us, God save the Queen. THE NATIONAL ANTHEM 16 Not on this land alone But be thy mercies known From shore to shore. Lord, make the nations see That men should brothers be, And from one family The wide world o'er.
