1 Lord s Day September 2, 2018 FAITH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Presbyterian Church in America 620 South Shirley Tacoma, Washington Ministers: Robert S. Rayburn, Steven A. Nicoletti fpc@faithtacoma.org
2 Lord s Day September 2, 2018 Upon entering sanctuary please maintain silence for sake of congregation s preparation for worship, and please make sure electronic devices are off or using silent mode. Prelude Lift up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates..... Johann A. Freylinghausen ( ), arr. David N. Johnson Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer Praise Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting. But Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love. Praise Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! from Psalm 147 (ESV) Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God Stand Up and Bless Lord No. 15 +Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer Merciful God, we humble ourselves in your presence, confessing our unworthiness and sinfulness in your sight. We have broken your holy law. We have not sought first your kingdom and righteousness. We have been anxious and troubled about many things, and have neglected things that belong to our peace. We have not loved our neighbor as ourselves, or done to ors as we would that y should do to us. Most gracious God, our heavenly Far, who has given your Son, Jesus Christ, to save your people from ir sins; forgive us, we beg you; cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and renew a right spirit within us: through grace of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen. Assurance of Pardon Who shall bring any charge against God s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is one who died more than that, who was raised who is at right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Romans 8:33-34 (ESV) *Confession of Faith Q. Why do you say that by faith alone you are right with God? A. It is not because of any value my faith has that God is pleased with me. Only
3 Christ s satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness make me right with God. And I can receive this righteousness and make it mine in no or way than by faith alone. Heidelberg Catechism No. 61 *Hymn of Faith in Christ When Weary, Seeking Rest No. 632 Worship of God with Tis and Offerings Laudate Dominum... W. A. Mozart ( ) Gloria Patri Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost; As it was in beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. *Congregational Petitions and Lord s Prayer Our Far which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is kingdom, and power, and glory, forever. Amen. Matw 6:9-13 (KJV) Scripture Lesson Philippians 2:12-13 (ESV p. 981) Sermon Distinct but Inseparable: Faith and Works Offering for Deacons Fund Allegro Vivace, Opus Friedrich Burgmüller ( ) The Lord s Supper The general order of communion will be back to front, with balcony coming first. As minister begins to serve those distributing elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during distribution of elements. Wine will be found in outside tray, grape juice in inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some or congregation, recognized as belonging to fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during time of Lord s Supper. O Heavenly Far, teach me to see that if Christ has pacified you and satisfied divine justice he can also deliver me from my sins; that Christ does not desire me, now justified,
4 to live in self-confidence in my own strength, but gives me law of Spirit of life to enable me to obey you; that Spirit and his power are mine by resting on Christ s death; that Spirit of Life within answers to law without; that if I sin not I should thank you for it; that if I sin I should be humbled daily under it; that I should mourn for sin more than or men do, for when I see I shall die because of sin, that makes me mourn; when I see how sin strikes at you, that makes me mourn; when I see that sin caused Christ s death, that makes me mourn; that sanctification is evidence of reconciliation, proving that faith has truly apprehended Christ; You have taught me that faith is nothing else than receiving your kindness; that it is an adherence to Christ, a resting on him, love clinging to him as a branch to tree. Amen. Mercy, Lord, have mercy upon us, Lord, our God, have mercy upon us. Christ, show Thy mercy unto us. Christ, attend to us, Hear Thou our fervent prayer, Hear Thou our prayer, Lord of creation, Almighty God of heaven, Lord, have mercy on us. Blessed Redeemer, Redeemer of all mankind, Mercy show unto us, Great Holy Spirit, Lord most Holy, hear us. Holy Trinity! Three in One God! Mercy show unto us; Lord of heaven, show Thy mercy unto us. W. A. Mozart/ed. and arr. by W. Ehret Hymn Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me No. 500 Reading of Scripture Philippians 3:7-16 (ESV p. 981) *Hymn The Son of God Goes Forth to War

Isaiah Next Sunday, September 9th, 9:45 am On Sunday, June 10th, Faith Presbyterian launched a new initiative called Isaiah 58. If you pour yourself out for hungry and satisfy desire of afflicted, n shall your light rise in darkness and your gloom be as noonday, (v.10). The purpose of initiative is to facilitate and encourage connection of our church members to local opportunities to serve widows, orphans, immigrants, refugees, and poor in like-minded ministries. Instead of having a ministry fair of tables as we did in June, next Sunday we will convene in Sanctuary during Sunday School hour. We will meet Pastor Dan Samuelson and hear about his heart for refugees; local ministry he built called Welcome Home ( and our collaboration potential with him, his church, his ministry and now, Better English on 38th, hosted at his church. Explanation of Cover Symbol The Shield of Holy Trinity: Found frequently in stained glass windows of medieval churches, this emblem expresses Christian doctrine of triunity of Almighty God. Positively, two affirmations are made about each person of Godhead. Reading from center circle outward: God (Deus) is (est) Far (P is for Pater), God is Son (F is for Filius), and God is Holy Spirit (SS is for Spiritus Sanctus). Reading from outer circles inward: The Far is God, Son is God, and Holy Spirit is God. Negatively, two affirmations are likewise made about each person of Godhead. Reading clockwise and counter-clockwise from one outer circle to or two: The Far is not (non est) Son or Holy Spirit, Son is not Far or Holy Spirit, and Holy Spirit is not Far or Son.

Although not at all technical or grammatically advanced, we do have a training and orientation for how to be a great partner. This year you can attend that training eir here at Faith on September 8 th or at Tacoma Nazarene Church (3640 South M Street, location of our new Better English on 38th program) on September 15 th. Most recent, for example, host of radio program Bible Answer Man, Hank Hanegraaff, converted to Orthodoxy. Usually, argument given is that those two churches represent a more ancient and auntic form of Christian faith. Elder Mike Pfefferle, making special use of Covenant College Professor Ken Stewart s award winning new book In Search of Ancient Roots, will examine this claim. You will find this a fascinating and very valuable introduction to early Christianity.
