Lord s Day October 18, :15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Cover Symbol No. 3 - Jesus Christ Victor Explanation of the Cover Symbol In the Greek language of the early Christian era abbreviations were typically the first and last letters of words, often with a superscription to indicate the missing letters. IC is a standard abbreviation of IHCOYC, the Greek Jesus, XC the abbreviation of XPICTOC, Christ; NIKA means He conquers. The symbol then reads Jesus Christ Conquers by the Cross or Jesus Christ Victor. FAITH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Presbyterian Church in America 620 South Shirley Tacoma, Washington Ministers: Robert S. Rayburn, Richard H. DeMass, Steven A. Nicoletti fpc@faithtacoma.org Lord s Day October 18, 2015 Upon entering the sanctuary please maintain silence for the sake of the congregation's preparation for worship, and please make sure electronic devices are off or using silent mode. Prelude O Could I Speak the Matchless Worth.Arr. from Mozart by Lowell Mason All Glory, Laud, and Honor.Melchior Teachner Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer I am not worthy, holy Lord, that Thou shouldst come to me; Speak but the word; one gracious word can set the sinner free. I am not worthy; cold and bare the lodging of my soul; How canst Thou deign to enter there? Speak, Lord! and make me whole. I am not worthy; yet, my God, how can I say Thee nay, Thee, Who didst give Thy flesh and blood my ransom price to pay? O come, in this sweet morning hour feed me with food Divine; And fill with all Thy love and power this empty heart of mine. Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God O God Beyond All Praising No. 660

+Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer O Lord, what evil have we not done? Or if there is evil that we have not done, what evil is there that we have not spoken? If there is any that we have not spoken, what evil is there that we have not thought to do? But you, O Lord, are good. You are merciful. You saw how deep we were sunk in death, and it was your power that drained dry the well of corruption in the depths of our hearts. All that You have asked of us was to deny our own wills and accept yours. Forgive us for every failure to do so and help us to follow You in every way and always, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. [Adapted from Augustine s Confessions, IX, x] Assurance of Pardon Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Psalm 32:1-2, 5b (ESV) *Confession of Faith Q. What do you believe concerning the forgiveness of sins? A. I believe that God, because of Christ's atonement, will never hold against me any of my sins nor my sinful nature which I need to struggle against all my life. Rather, in his grace God grants me the righteousness of Christ to free me forever from judgment. Heidelberg Catechism No. 56 *Hymn of Faith in Jesus Christ How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds No. 647 Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings Offertory Intermezzo, Op. 116, No. 6. Johannes Brahms ( ) All things are Thine: no gift have we, Lord of all gifts, to offer Thee, And hence with grateful hearts today, Thine own before Thy feet we lay. Amen. *Congregational Petitions and the Lord s Prayer Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV) Scripture Lesson Acts 4:1-22 (ESV pp ) Sermon The Fact of Unbelief The Lord s Supper The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request.

You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. O Heavenly Father, teach me to see that if Christ has pacified you and satisfied divine justice he can also deliver me from my sins; that Christ does not desire me, now justified, to live in self-confidence in my own strength, but gives me the law of the Spirit of life to enable me to obey you; that the Spirit and his power are mine by resting on Christ s death; that the Spirit of Life within answers to the law without; that if I sin not I should thank you for it; that if I sin I should be humbled daily under it; that I should mourn for sin more than other men do, for when I see I shall die because of sin, that makes me mourn; when I see how sin strikes at you, that makes me mourn; when I see that sin caused Christ s death, that makes me mourn; that sanctification is the evidence of reconciliation, proving that faith has truly apprehended Christ; You have taught me that faith is nothing else than receiving your kindness; that it is an adherence to Christ, a resting on him, love clinging to him as a branch to the tree. Amen. To Thee O Lord, do I lift up my soul, O my God, I trust in Thee. Sergei Rachmaninov Hymn My Faith Looks Up to Thee No. 528 Reading of Scripture Ephesians 2:1-10, 11-13, (ESV pp ) *Hymn Of the Father s Love Begotten No. 162 *Benediction +Silent Prayer We pray O Lord, that our souls may be refreshed by our worship, and that we, being gathered into the fellowship of the saints, may be kept in the faith and love of Your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. His voice as the sound of the dulcimer sweet, Is Heard through the shadows of death; The cedars of Lebanon bow at his feet, The air is perfumed with his breath. His lips as a fountain of righteousness flow that waters the garden of grace, From which their salvation the Gentiles shall know, And bask in the smile of his face. Love sits in his eyelids and scatters delight Through all the bright regions on high.

Their faces the Cherubim veil in his sight, And tremble with fullness of joy. He looks, and ten thousands of angels rejoice, And myriads wait for his word, He speaks, And eternity, filled with his voice, Re-echoes the praise of her Lord. Save the Date: Annual ACM Recital Competition in 2016 Parents and their music students will want to mark their calendars for the annual scholarship competition for young Christian musicians: April 2, The purse of prizes for a dozen winners is $2,000. Adult Sunday School The Foundations Class (Note: location changed to Room 304) Pastor Rayburn continues this class for those new to the church. It covers the most fundamental teachings of our Christian Faith and introduces the distinctive elements of the Presbyterian tradition. The Women of Faith Class I (WIC Room 117) Our own Elder Dick Hannula has come out with another wonderful book and we are reading it together in our Sunday School class. Radiant: Fifty Remarkable Women in Church History, is a series of brief biographies about women in the history of the Christian Church from the first century through the 20 th century. Many of these women were martyrs, others suffered for their faith in Christ, and all reflected Christ s selfless love towards those around them. Some of these women will be familiar to most Christian readers, while others will not, and Dick brings each one to life in this fascinating read. Dick s reference to Psalm 34:5 perfectly describes all these women: Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. Join us in the WIC room if you d like to read and discuss this book together. The Women of Faith Class II (Library) Led by Mrs. Regina Kamke, this class is reading together Letters of John Newton published by The Banner of Truth Trust. The Word of Faith Class (Sanctuary) Elder Mike Pfefferle continues his series on the Law of God. This class will explore the relationship between the Law of God as found in the Old Testament and the Christian believer. Did Christ put an end to the law, as Romans 10:4 seems to say? Was the Old Testament law ever a path to righteousness? Are Christians bound to keep the Ten Commandments (including that pesky one, the Fourth)? Can a Christian say with David, Oh how I love your law! It is my

meditation all the day (Psalm 119:97). Or is that submitting again to a yoke of slavery (see Galatians 5:1)? Come to this class and find out! High School Sunday School (North Half of DeSoto Hall) The high school class continues their series The Drama of Scripture: Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story, based on the book by Craig G. Bartholomew and Michael W. Goheen. Covenant Group for Singles and Young Marrieds (Conference Room) We are currently studying Faith in a Pluralistic Society - Studies in Judges. Please join us to study God s Word, with fellowship and donuts. College & Career Group Our college & career group meets at the Aown s home on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month: once for a social gathering and once for a small-group-style gathering. Our current upcoming schedule is: October 24: Small Group Gathering (7:30 pm) November 14: Social Gathering (7:30 pm) November 28: Small Group Gathering (7:30 pm) For more information, and to receive last minute updates and announcements, please contact Pastor Nicoletti to be added to our Facebook group or list.
