The Latin words are taken from Exodus 3:2 and read...and yet it was not consumed. In one of his letters Samuel Rutherford reminds his correspondent, The bush has been burning these five thousand years, and no man yet saw the ashes of that fire. 4 The Rev. Dr. C. John Collins, who with his wife Diane was once a member of this congregation and for some months a pastoral intern, is now Professor of Old Testament at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, and has been the department chair since Before going to Covenant in 1993, Dr. Collins served as a church planter in Spokane and was a member of our Presbytery. Professor Collins holds a BS and MS from M.I.T (Computer Science and Systems Engineering), M.Div. from Faith Evangelical Lutheran Seminary (Tacoma) and Ph.D. in Hebrew Language from the University of Liverpool. He has received grants from the John Templeton Foundation and from the Center for Science and Culture for his work in science and faith. He is author of four books: Did Adam and Eve Really Exist? Who They Were and Why You Should Care; The God of Miracles: An Exegetical Examination of God s Action in the World; Science and Faith: Friends or Foes? and Genesis 1-4: A Linguistic, Literary, and Theological Commentary. Professor Collins also served as OT chair on the translation committee for the English Standard Version of the Bible, and OT Editor for the ESV Study Bible. He was a founding board member of the Pierce County Crisis Pregnancy Center in 1983, now in its 33rd year of operation. He just became one of the six recipients of the inaugural Henry Resident Fellowship for the scholar-in-residence Creation Project at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL. The Lord s Supper is observed every Lord s Day at Faith Presbyterian Church alternating between the morning and the evening services. The officers have wanted to retain evening communion not only because all the Lord s Suppers explicitly mentioned in the New Testament were in the evening, but as well to reinforce the importance of Sunday evening worship as a regular part of the observance of the Lord s Day. Baby Shower for Heidi and Baby Girl Bone Ladies, you will not want to miss the opportunity to share in the excitement of the anticipated arrival of a baby girl to Heidi and Jeff Bone. This fascinating biography is about Irene Webster-Smith, an Irish woman born in 1888, who became a missionary to Japan, rescuing prostitutes and geisha girls and leading them to Christ. Join us in the WIC room if you d like to read and discuss this book together. The Women of Faith Class II (Room 301) We are studying together the book of Luke. The Word of Faith Class (Sanctuary) What are they saying about Adam & Eve and why should we care? Professor C. John ("Jack") Collins of Covenant Theological Seminary who has written a very highly regarded book on the subject, will survey the recent controversy about Adam and Eve, their distinct creation, and the theological importance of it to the Christian faith. This is a great opportunity to hear an expert in the field weigh in on a current controversy in evangelical Christianity. High School Sunday School (North Half of DeSoto Hall) Today the high school class will meet with the adult class in the sanctuary to hear from Professor Collins. Better English on Sixth ESL Sunday School (Room 304) This class led by Tim Bentson and Andrew Milton is going through What Christians Believe, an ESL Bible study by J. Wesley Eby. Music Ministry: Choristers Choristers is FPC s children s vocal ensemble program that provides musical training for treble voices. Participants must be able to read simple English and be responsive to general classroom expectations. They meet each Wednesday evening, 7:00 8:15, in the Choir Room. Commonly they are preparing for singing periodically in FPC s worship services. For more information, contact Choristers Director Melissa McMillan. Music Ministry: Summer Singing Camp Registration is open for the ACM Children's (ages 5 +) Summer Singing Camp directed by Melissa McMillan, July 11-15, 9:30-11:30 a.m., at FPC. Sonia King from Pilgrim Bible Church will assist in the camp s leadership. The camp will conclude with a final concert on Friday, July 15, 7:00 p.m. Register online at acmusicians.org. Men of Faith, Morning Prayer Meetings There are opportunities to meet with fellow Men of Faith for prayer each week: Wednesday morning with Phil Perkins: We meet at Treos Cafe in Old Town Tacoma, 2312 North 30 th at 6:00 am. This meeting, which originated six years ago has continuously focused on the Psalms.

8 Thursday morning with Thom Wilson at 6:30 am at the church. We are reading and praying through Ian Hamilton's book The Faith Shaped Life. Nursing Mothers In addition to the nursery rooms, Room #117 the Women in the Church room, is open and available for your convenience during all Worship Services. The service can be seen and heard in the WIC room. God's Breadbasket Ministry The purpose of God s Breadbasket is to provide meals for those families needing extra help due to illness, death in the family, or the arrival of newborns. If you know of a need, please contact Kathy Haass, Alisha Bennett or the church office. More participants are needed. If you would like to serve in this ministry (usually no more than one or two times per year) please contact Kathy or Alisha to be added to the roster. Thank you! Women to Women Ministry There is a ministry of mentoring by women to women here at Faith. If you would like to meet with a woman for this purpose, you may contact Debbie Mellott and she will put you in touch with one of the women providing this ministry.
