Order of Worship Prelude Welcome and greetings Fugue in C Dietrich Buxtehude Chad Middlebrooks, pastor of adult discipleship Introit Wake Every Breath Chancel Choir Wake ev ry breath and ev ry string, to bless the great Redeemer King; his name through ev ry clime adored! Let joy, and gratitude, and love through all the notes of music move, and Jesus sound on ev ry chord. text and music by William Billings * Call to worship based on Psalm 35 and Psalm 119 Leader: We will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people we will praise you. All: Our tongues will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long. May our lips overflow with praise, for you teach us your decrees. May our tongues sing of your word, for all your commands are righteous! * Hymn of praise 164, vv. 1, 2, 3 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing * Prayer of adoration * Affirmation of faith The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Call to confession taken from 2 Chronicles 7 and Hosea 14 If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin. I will heal their waywardness and love them freely. Silent prayers of confession Choral prayer Hear Our Prayer, O Lord Chancel Choir Hear our prayer, O Lord, hear our prayer, O Lord; incline thine ear to us, and grant us thy peace. Amen. text anonymous; music by George Whelpton, 1897 Assurance of God s pardoning grace taken from Psalm 103 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. * Hymn of assurance 164, vv. 4, 5, 6 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory Oh, That I Had a Thousand Voices Chancel Choir Oh, that I had a thousand voices to praise my God with thousand tongues! My heart, which in the Lord rejoices, would then proclaim in grateful songs to all, wherever I might be, what great things God has done for me. Creator, humbly I implore you to listen to my earthly song until that day when I adore you, when I have joined the angel throng and learned with choirs of heav n to sing eternal anthems to my King. text by Johann Mentzer, 1704; trans. by Catherine Winkworth; music by Johann B. Konig, arr. Paul Bouman * Doxology 731

* Prayer of dedication and thanksgiving * Scripture reading from Jonah 3:1-10 James Stevens (9:30) p in pew Bible and text printed in the bulletin Tom West (11:00) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Prayer of preparation for the study of God s Word Sermon Look Who s Turning to God: the Wicked! Joe Novenson, pastor of senior adults Pastoral prayer * Hymn of response Fill Thou My Life, O Lord My God * Benediction Fill thou my life, O Lord my God, in ev ry part with praise, that my whole being may proclaim thy being and thy ways. Not for the lip of praise alone, nor e en the praising heart, I ask, but for a life made up of praise in ev ry part: Fill ev ry part of me with praise; let all my being speak of thee and of thy love, O Lord, poor though I be, and weak. So shall no part of day or night from sacredness be free: but all my life, in ev ry step, be fellowship with thee. text by Horatius Bonar, 1866; traditional American melody, amazing grace * Congregational response Threefold Amen * Postlude O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing David Cherwien * Congregation standing as you are able Musicians for this week: Joy Gibbons director Joshua Knight organ

Jonah 3: Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 2 Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you. 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city a visit required three days. 4 On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned. 5 The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. 6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7 Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh: By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let any man or beast, herd or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish. 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.

SERMON NOTES Look Who s Turning to God: the Wicked! Jonah 3: The half-hearted obedience of God s servant (vv. 1-4) 2. The remarkable response of the wicked (vv. 5-9) 3. The far-reaching compassion of God (vv. 9-10)
