As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. My Father, I could never have sought my happiness in your love, unless you had first loved me. Your Spirit has encouraged me by grace to seek you, has made known to me your reconciliation in Jesus, has taught me to believe it, has helped me to take you for my God and portion. May he grant me to grow in the knowledge and experience of your love, and walk in it all the way to glory. 7 This Evening After instruction in congregational singing, we continue our series of sermons on Christian doubts with It may work for you, but it doesn t for me. Evening Prelude Begins at 5:40 p.m. Beautiful music enlivens our spirits and adds to our Sabbath joy. Each Sunday evening prior to the worship service, musicians begin to play or sing at 5:40 p.m. During the prelude, Mr. Ron Bechtel will present his newest hymn tune, Bentson, a setting of Charles Wesley s 18th century poem, Love Divine, All Loves Excelling. Congregational Singing As you may remember, several months ago we made a first effort to cultivate our singing as a congregation in worship. We have decided to begin again this evening with a more systematic approach. We have outlined a curriculum that in fifteen minute segments will carry us through several months of non-supper evening services, covering singing in harmony, in unison; the volume of the congregation s voice, the tempo at which a hymn is sung, and several other considerations bearing on how well a congregation sings a particular hymn. We have in mind eventually beginning to include in the bulletin specific instructions for the congregation s singing of certain hymns. This should be both fun and useful! Mothers Encouragement Group Resumes This Thursday Calling for all hardworking moms of young children who might be interested in a threehour break every couple of weeks-- is the Pope Catholic?!! We will begin our fourth year of meeting together every other Thursday (more or less--check bulletin for dates) sharing (all kinds of stuff), snacks and a hot beverage of your choice. Babysitting is provided for babies and toddlers. We meet in the lovely downstairs WIC room, sit in comfy chairs, bring knitting if you so desire and generally commiserate with and enjoy one another. This year we are beginning on September 22 at 9:30 a.m. (wrap up by noon). If you ve never been to one of our meetings, talk to someone who has--all moms are welcome, whether you re struggling or not! We want to be in the business of encouraging you in the important, relentless work of raising your children to love our God. Need more information and/or incentive to come? Call Dawn Darby or Florence Rayburn. Genesis 39 for Women Ladies, please join us for part two of the Conquerors Series on the brain during Sunday school on September 25. We will follow the viewing with a short discussion and prayer. Coffee Volunteers Needed We have a real need for volunteers for the 8:15 Worship Service to prepare the coffee/tea for fellowship after the service. There is also room for more volunteers for preparing the coffee at the end of the Sunday School hour for the 11:00 service. Prepping the coffee/tea for fellowship is a simple but important service to our congregation. Please consider taking part in this ministry -- the more the merrier and the goal is to schedule you only once every 5-6 weeks. If you are able to help, please contact Terri Hurlbut or Margo Kelly. Men of Faith Oktoberfest September 24th, :00 pm - 5:00 pm The Ken Kvale s have graciously agreed to host our 7th annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 24th from 2-5 pm. Our guest speaker is Nathan Betts. Nathan is an apologist with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM). Nathan completed his undergraduate degree at Tyndale University and his MA in Bible and Ministry at King s College London. Nathan and his wife, Brittany, live locally in Bonney Lake, WA, with their two young children.

8 Oktoberfest has become the kick-off for our next book to read and discuss together in small groups. In preparation for the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther s Ninety-Five theses October 31, 2017 this year we will be reading Heralds of the Reformation: Thirty Biographies of Sheer Grace, written by our own Dick Hannula. In thirty short biographies, Heralds of the Reformation tells the important story of the struggle between the theological authorities and the men and women who refused to keep quiet about the sheer grace of the Gospel. The book is $10 and is now available for sale in the Narthex. A sign-up sheet will be available in the Narthex on September 4, 11, and 18. The cost for the food and beverages is $8 for adults and $5 under age 21. Teenage sons are most welcome. Join us for our fall classic. If you have any questions, please call Chad Isenberger. Tuesday Ladies Bible Study Ladies, you are invited to join us on Tuesdays, beginning September 13 from 9:30 to noon. We meet in the Women in the Church (WIC) Room 117, downstairs in the church building. This fall we will be studying the Letters of Peter using a newly published study guide written by our own Dr. Bob Rogland. In his commendation on the back of the book Pastor Rayburn writes, What lay people, interested in knowing the Bible better, need and want is a study guide neither overly technical nor too simple, something that will genuinely advance their understanding of the Word of God. Dr. Robert Rogland s Bible Study Guides occupy that happy place between a full-fledged commentary and something suitable only for a novice. Solid exegesis, clearly presented, with helpful study questions added make for ideal guides for Bible study. If you need more information or want to order a book ($10), please contact Dawn Darby. Adult Sunday School The Women of Faith Class I (WIC Room 117) We are reading Mindy Belz book They Say We Are Infidels in preparation for her being with us for the Christmas Brunch on December 10th. Join us in the WIC Room, 117. You don t need a copy of the book. The Women of Faith Class II (Room 301) We are studying together the book of Luke. The Word of Faith Class (Sanctuary) Sinatra and Solomon. The Great American Songbook and the Great Hebrew Songbook. This class led by Robert Case is an exegetical look at the romance of the Song of Songs illuminated by the best American popular songs of the 20 th century. High School Sunday School (North Half of DeSoto Hall) The high school class continues in its series on 1&2 Samuel. Better English on Sixth ESL Sunday School (Room 304) This class led by Tim Bentson and Andrew Milton is going through The Gospel of John: Who is Jesus, an ESL Bible study by J. Wesley Eby and Robert D. Troutman. Explanation of the Cover Symbol In the Greek language of the early Christian era abbreviations were typically the first and last letters of words, often with a superscription to indicate the missing letters. IC is a standard abbreviation of IHCOYC, the Greek Jesus, XC the abbreviation of XPICTOC, Christ; NIKA means He conquers. The symbol then reads Jesus Christ Conquers by the Cross or Jesus Christ Victor.

Weekly rehearsals are now preparing Handel s masterwork on Tuesday evenings, 7:15 8:45, through November 29. 10 Young Musicians: ACM Recital Competition Saturday, April 1, 2017 Young musicians and their parents are invited to benefit from a generous purse of scholarship awards for continuing music education. Registration opens online December 1, For students, ages 8 19, currently taking music lessons on piano, woodwind, strings, and brass. College & Career Group Our college & career group usually meets on the second and fourth Fridays of the month: once for a social gathering and once for a small-group-style gathering. Men of Faith, Morning Prayer Meetings There are opportunities to meet with fellow Men of Faith for prayer each week: Wednesday mornings with Phil Perkins: We meet at Starbucks in Old Town Tacoma, 2112 North 30th at 6:00 am. This meeting, which originated six years ago has continuously focused on the Psalms. Thursday morning with Thom Wilson at 6:30 am at the church. We are reading and praying through Ian Hamilton s book The Faith Shaped Life. A Reminder about Parking As a courtesy to our neighbors, please do not park on the south side of South 8 th Street. Also, please do not park where the curb is painted yellow. Thank you. Nursing Mothers In addition to the nursery rooms, Room #117 the Women in the Church room, is open and available for your convenience during all Worship Services. The service can be seen and heard in the WIC room. Meals on Wheels The purpose of Meals on Wheels is to provide meals for those families needing extra help due to illness, death in the family, or the arrival of newborns. If you know of a need, please contact Kathy Haass, Alisha Bennett or the church office. More participants are needed. If you would like to serve in this ministry (usually no more than one or two times per year) please contact Kathy or Alisha to be added to the roster. Thank you! Women to Women Ministry There is a ministry of mentoring by women to women here at Faith. If you would like to meet with a woman for this purpose, you may contact Debbie Mellott and she will put you in touch with one of the women providing this ministry.
