Lord s Day October 29, 2017 Faith Presbyterian Church Presbyterian Church in America 620 South Shirley, Tacoma, Washington Ministers: Robert S. Rayburn, Richard H. DeMass, Steven A. Nicoletti fpc@faithtacoma.org
Lord s Day October 29, 2017 Upon entering the sanctuary please maintain silence for the sake of the congregation s preparation for worship and please make sure electronic devices are off or using silent mode. Prelude Lord, God Our Father Evermore... J. S. Bach ( ) Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer I am not worthy, holy Lord, that thou shouldst come to me; Speak but the word; one gracious word can set the sinner free. I am not worthy; cold and bare the lodging of my soul; How canst thou deign to enter there? Speak, Lord! and make me whole. I am not worthy; yet, my God, how can I say thee nay, Thee, Who didst give thy flesh and blood my ransom price to pay? O come, in this sweet morning hour feed me with food divine; And fill with all thy love and power this empty heart of mine. Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God (Psalm 68:1-6) God Shall Arise +Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; we acknowledge and confess our many sins; which we have committed; by thought, word, and deed; against your divine majesty. We do earnestly repent; and are heartily sorry for these our wrongs; remembering them is grief to us. Have mercy upon us; have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for the sake of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ; forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please you in newness of life; to the honor and glory of your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Assurance of Pardon He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:10-12 (ESV)
*Hymn of Faith in Jesus Christ Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me No. 500 Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings Lord Jesus Christ, My Sovereign Good... Johann G. Walther ( ) We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator; In grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before you, we kneel and adore you; We bless your holy name, glad praises we sing. With voices united our praises we offer, To you, great Jehovah, glad anthems we raise. Your strong arm will guide us, our God is beside us; To you, our great Redeemer, forever be praise. Julia Cady Cory (1902) Tune: Kremser *Congregational Petitions and the Lord s Prayer Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV) Scripture Lesson Genesis 47:28-31 (ESV p. 41) Sermon The Holy Land The Lord s Supper The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. My Father, I could never have sought my happiness in your love, unless you had first loved me. Your Spirit has encouraged me by grace to seek you, has made known to me your reconciliation in Jesus, has taught me to believe it, has helped me to take you for my God and portion. May he grant me to grow in the knowledge and experience of your love, and
walk in it all the way to glory. Blessed forever be your fatherly affection, which chose me to be one of your children by faith in Jesus: I thank you for giving me the desire to live as such. In Jesus, my brother, I have my new birth, every restraining power, every renewing grace. It is by your Spirit I call you Father, believe in you, love you; strengthen me inwardly for every purpose of my Christian life; let the Spirit continually reveal to me my interest in Christ, and open to me the riches of your love in him. Amen. Jesu, my love, my joy, my rest, Thy perfect love close in my breast That I thee love and never rest; And make me love thee of all thinge best, And wounde my heart in thy love free, That I may reign in joy evermore with thee. 15th century text/john Rutter Hymn Jerusalem the Golden No. 539 Reading of Scripture Psalm 48:1-3, 9-14 (ESV p. 472) *Hymn For All the Saints *Benediction +Silent Prayer Direct us, O Lord, in all our ways and by your mercy and power protect us in our most holy faith; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name, and finally, by your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Take my life, and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee; Take my moments and my days, Let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them move At the impulse of Thy love; Take my feet, and let them be Swift and beautiful for Thee. Take my voice, and let me sing, Always, only for my King. Take my lips, and let them be Filled with messages from Thee. Take my silver and my gold; Not a mite would I withhold.
Postlude Take my intellect, and use Every power as Thou shalt choose. Take my will, and make it Thine; It shall be no longer mine. Take my heart, it is Thine own; It shall be Thy royal throne. Take my love, my Lord, I pour At Thy feet its treasure store. Take myself, and I will be Ever, only, all for Thee. 8 Save the Date: Reformation 500 Celebration at FPC, November 3-5, 2017 In recognition of the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation (1517), FPC and ACM are sponsoring a dynamic weekend of teaching and music on November 3-5. Two guest speakers will be featured: Dr. Hans Madueme, Associate Professor of Bible, Covenant College, and Prof. Charles King, Assistant Professor of Music, Trinity International University, Chicago. Dr. Madueme is a native Nigerian with both M.D. and PhD degrees. As a theologian, he specializes in the challenge that modern scientism poses for the Christian faith. He has written and spoken widely on the historicity of Adam and Eve and the doctrine of original sin, which in our culture are the watershed issues even as justification was in the 16th century. Professor King served as longtime Pastor of Worship and Music at College Church of Wheaton before taking his current post at Trinity. He teaches various music courses and directs choral and instrumental ensembles. His recent thesis written for Wheaton Graduate School equips him well to speak on the musical impact of the Reformation. See more details on his blog, The Ref500 weekend will feature lectures, workshops, and a full palette of excellent music, including a hymn festival on Friday evening featuring Bach s Cantata #80, Ein Feste Burg ist unser Gott and the premier presentation of Sure Redeemer, an anthem by John Wykoff. Flyers with the weekend s full schedule of events are available in the narthex and on the church website: org/event/reformation-500-celebration. Adult Sunday School Genesis 39 for Women (South Half of DeSoto Hall) Ladies and high school girls, Gwen Westerlund will present part two of her seminar entitled, Building Blocks of Emotional Health & Freedom. Gwen, a former member - along with her family - of Faith, is a professional counselor living in Colorado. High School Sunday School The high school young men will join the Word of Faith class in the sanctuary today; the girls will meet in DeSoto Hall for the Genesis 39 seminar. Better English on Sixth ESL Sunday School (Room 304) This class led by Kathy Lewis is reading aloud The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Study guides and copies of the book are provided free for class attendees. Choristers Rehearsals Underway Choristers meet each Wednesday evening, 7:00 to 8:15, under Melissa McMillan s direction. To register your treble-voiced child (ages 7 +), contact Melissa. Explanation of the Cover Symbol The Chi Rho symbol is one of the most ancient Christian symbols. XP, the first two letters of the Greek Christ, is an abbreviation of the name of the Lord. This symbol is often, as here, accompanied with other symbols, in this case Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. The symbol originates from Revelation 22:13: I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. (cf. Revelation 1:8, 17; 21:6). This particular symbol dates from the first few centuries of the Christian era and is often found on tombs.
Men of Faith, Morning Prayer Meetings & Devotions There are opportunities to meet with fellow Men of Faith for prayer and devotions each week: Monday-Friday mornings Fit for the Cross devotions with Jim Roland, 5:30 am at the church, Room 304. Come to the North door of the church. Any questions call Jim. Wednesday mornings with Phil Perkins: We meet at Old Town MarKee coffee shop at 2312 N. 30th St., Tacoma. This group meets at 6 am for Bible reading and prayer. After several years we continue to focus solely on the Psalms which serve as a life guide. One of the ancient church fathers, Athanasius wrote, Whatever your particular need or trouble, from this same book (the Psalms) you can select a form of words to fit it, so that you...learn the way to remedy your ill. Thursday mornings with Thom Wilson, 6:30 am at the church. Join us in studying through the books of Ezra and Nehemiah as we pray for our concerns and the world around us. College & Career Community Groups College & Career is a young adult ministry of Faith Presbyterian Church. The goal is to provide opportunities for young adults 18 and older, whether single or married, to do life together throughout the week and form deep Christian friendships. C&C Community Groups are weekly small groups that meet in a home for dinner and fellowship. We currently have two established groups: one that meets on Tuesday at Caleb and Tamala Bestvater s home at 7 pm and one that meets on Thursday at Nate and Rachael Shelden s home at 6:30 pm. For more details, or if you re interested in joining a C&C Community Group, please contact one of us and we ll help you get connected! A Reminder about Parking As a courtesy to our neighbors, please do not park on the south side of South 8th Street, on South Winnifred Street behind the church, or where the curb is painted yellow. Nursing Mothers In addition to the nursery rooms, Room #117 the Women in the Church room, is open and available for your convenience during all Worship Services. The service can be seen and heard in the WIC room. Hearing Assistance If you would like a device to help with hearing the worship service, please see a Deacon.
