1 Lord s Day August 30, :15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Cover Symbol No. 5 - XP Explanation of the Cover Symbol The Chi Rho symbol is one of the most ancient Christian symbols. XP, the first two letters of the Greek Christ, is an abbreviation of the name of the Lord. This symbol is often, as here, accompanied with other symbols, in this case Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. The symbol originates from Revelation 22:13: I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. (cf. Revelation 1:8, 17; 21:6). This particular symbol dates from the first few centuries of the Christian era and is often found on tombs. 3 The Lord s Supper The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. Lord Jesus, you say that you and you alone are the way, the truth, and the life. You welcome all who are weary and burdened to come to you and promise to give them rest. You also say that those who come to you must be prepared to follow you, even at great cost. Help me, Lord Jesus, to believe what you say and to resolve to follow you whatever the cost. There are reasons enough for me to come to you. I admit that I am a sinner, more sinful than I ever dared to admit. But in you I find a greater love than I ever dared hope for. Thank you for your suffering and death in the place of sinners to pay their debt. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and confess you, Jesus Christ, as my Savior and my Lord. Battle of the Books IX & Grand Prize Drawing August 30 The Library s Summer Reading Program ends today, with the Battle of the Books IX. All Middle Schoolers and their siblings are invited to come to DeSoto Hall at 4:00 p.m. for pizza. Everyone is invited to come and watch the Battle of the Books, the grueling Middle-School book-trivia game at 4:30 p.m. Plenty of spectator seating is available! Celebration of the Lord s Faithfulness, September 6th Be sure to join us next Sunday evening as we gratefully acknowledge the Lord s faithfulness to our congregation, in particular for our ability to retire the loan on our building. 7 From the Aown and Bestvater Families The Aown and Bestvater families would like to thank all who helped with making Tamala and Caleb's wedding so lovely. We are aware that many of you put a lot of effort into setting up, tearing down, or performing. Our families are very grateful and we feel blessed to be a part of such a wonderful body. Choristers (Treble Choir) Begins in Mid-September FPC's music ministry for children who are at least 7 years old will rehearse each Wednesday evening, 7:00-8:15 p.m., beginning September 16. Registration for Choristers begins today in the narthex. Women in the Church Fall Kick-Off Ladies, you will not want to miss the WIC Fall Kick - Off Dinner on Tuesday, September 15 at 6-8 pm in DeSoto Hall! This year's theme is Worship in Our Service Part 2. Besides a fully catered dinner, free to you, we will be led in a time of worship and praise by Charlene Peyton. Mrs. Peyton has quite a musical resume and will be a great blessing to us! Please come join us and sign up in the today. Men of Faith Oktoberfest, September 26, 2015 The Ken Kvale s have graciously agreed to host our 6 th annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 26 th from 2-5 pm. Our guest speaker will be Rev. Mike Kelly, Executive Director of the NW Church Planting Network and Associate Pastor of Green Lake Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Seattle. Oktoberfest has become the kick-off for our next book to read and discuss together in small groups. This year we will be reading The Faith Shaped Life by Ian Hamilton. The book, along with questions, will be available for purchase in mid-september. A sign-up sheet will be available in the Narthex on September 6, 13, and 20. Adult Sunday School The Women of Faith Class I (WIC Room 117) Our own Elder Dick Hannula has come out with another wonderful book and we are reading it together in our Sunday School class. Radiant: Fifty Remarkable Women in Church History, is a series of brief biographies about women in the history of the Christian Church from the first century through the 20 th century. Many of these women were martyrs, others suffered for their faith in Christ, and all reflected Christ s selfless love towards those around them. Some of these women will be familiar to most Christian readers, while others will not, and Dick brings each one to life in this fascinating read. Dick s reference to Psalm 34:5 perfectly describes all these women: Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. Join us in the WIC room if you d like to read and discuss this book together. The Women of Faith Class II (Room 301) Led by Mrs. Regina Kamke, this class is reading together Letters of John Newton published by The Banner of Truth Trust. The Word of Faith Class (Sanctuary) Jonathan Nichols & John Pulliam will discuss the ESL Ministry Better English on Sixth due to begin September 14 th. This session will begin with an update on how God

8 is using ESL ministries around the country and conclude with a language partner orientation and prayer requests for the ministry. High School Sunday School (North Half of DeSoto Hall) This Sunday the high school class will begin their series The Drama of Scripture: Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story, based on the book by Craig G. Bartholomew and Michael W. Goheen. Covenant Group for Singles and Young Marrieds (Conference Room) We are currently studying Faith in a Pluralistic Society - Studies in Judges. Please join us to study God s Word, with fellowship and donuts. College & Career Group Our college & career group meets at the Aown s home on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month: once for a social gathering and once for a small-group-style gathering. Check it out at: Men of Faith, Morning Prayer Meetings There are opportunities to meet with fellow Men of Faith for prayer each week: Wednesday mornings with Phil Perkins: We meet at Treos Cafe in Old Town Tacoma, 2312 North 30 th at 6:00 am. This meeting, which originated six years ago has continuously focused on the Psalms. Thursday morning with Thom Wilson at 6:30 am at the church. We are reading and praying through Joshua and Judges. Nursing Mothers In addition to the nursery rooms, Room #117 the Women In the Church room, is open and available for your convenience during all Worship Services. The service can be seen and heard in the WIC room. God's Breadbasket Ministry The purpose of God s Breadbasket is to provide meals for those families in need due to illness, death in the family, or the arrival of newborns. If you know of a need, please contact Kathy Haass or Alisha Bennett or the church office. Women to Women Ministry There is now a ministry of mentoring by women to women here at Faith.
