1 Lord s Day August 7, :15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Cover Symbol No. 1 - Holy Trinity Explanation of the Cover Symbol The Shield of the Holy Trinity: Found frequently in stained glass windows of medieval churches, this emblem expresses the Christian doctrine of the triunity of Almighty God. Positively, two affirmations are made about each person of the Godhead. Reading from the center circle outward: God (Deus) is (est) Father (P is for Pater), God is Son (F is for Filius), and God is Holy Spirit (SS is for Spiritus Sanctus). Reading from the outer circles inward: The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. Negatively, two affirmations are likewise made about each person of the Godhead. Reading clockwise and counterclockwise from one outer circle to the other two: The Father is not (non est) the Son or the Holy Spirit, the Son is not the Father or the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father or the Son. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to

3 the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. Lord Jesus, you say that you and you alone are the way, the truth, and the life. You welcome all who are weary and burdened to come to you and promise to give them rest. You also say that those who come to you must be prepared to follow you, even at great cost. Help me, Lord Jesus, to believe what you say and to resolve to follow you whatever the cost. There are reasons enough for me to come to you. I admit that I am a sinner, more sinful than I ever dared to admit. But in you I find a greater love than I ever dared hope for. Thank you for your suffering and death in the place of sinners to pay their debt. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and confess you, Jesus Christ, as my Savior and my Lord. Amen. Bread of the world in mercy broken. Wine of the soul in mercy shed. We continue our sermons on Christian Doubts, turning to the frequent claim that science has disproved the Bible or that the Christian faith is unscientific. Sunday School Fellowship Hour Today Come and enjoy a time of fellowship and refreshments in DeSoto Hall between the 8:15 am and services during the month of August. Coffee will not be served after the 11:00 service. The ESL Sunday School class will continue on the regular weekly schedule using The Gospel of John: Who is Jesus? an ESL study by Eby and Troutman; all other classes will resume in September. Our August Sunday school break provides a great opportunity not only for fellowship but to drop by the library and see what resources are there for your use and enjoyment. It will remain open during the time between the morning services throughout the month. July in Christmas Family Fun Luncheon Oh Summer! Picnics and BBQs, walks on the beach and playgrounds, camping and s'mores, sunshine, swimming, 'Swung on and Belted!' Oh Summer! Soak it up, savor it, save it, because Sunday, November 13th is our next Family Fun Luncheon and on that probably dark and dreary day, we'll all need a big dose of summer! We'll enjoy all sorts of summery foods, sunshiny fun, and happy fellowship. It's still a ways off,

7 but mark it on your calendar and fully enjoy summer now so you can remember it later. During your summer fun, take some photos and save them to send to Lesley Pollack later so we can have a super summer slideshow of all things fun in the sun. Men of Faith, Morning Prayer Meetings There are opportunities to meet with fellow Men of Faith for prayer each week:

8 Wednesday morning with Phil Perkins: We meet at Treos Cafe in Old Town Tacoma, 2312 North 30 th at 6:00 am. This meeting, which originated six years ago has continuously focused on the Psalms. Thursday morning with Thom Wilson at 6:30 am at the church. We are reading and praying through Ian Hamilton's book The Faith Shaped Life. Nursing Mothers In addition to the nursery rooms, Room #117 the Women in the Church room, is open and available for your convenience during all Worship Services. The service can be seen and heard in the WIC room. God's Breadbasket Ministry The purpose of God s Breadbasket is to provide meals for those families needing extra help due to illness, death in the family, or the arrival of newborns. If you know of a need, please contact Kathy Haass, Alisha Bennett or the church office. More participants are needed. If you would like to serve in this ministry (usually no more than one or two times per year) please contact Kathy or Alisha to be added to the roster. Thank you! Women to Women Ministry There is a ministry of mentoring by women to women here at Faith. If you would like to meet with a woman for this purpose, you may contact Debbie Mellott and she will put you in touch with one of the women providing this ministry.
