1 Lord s Day September 4, :15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Cover Symbol No. 1 - Holy Trinity Explanation of the Cover Symbol The Shield of the Holy Trinity: Found frequently in stained glass windows of medieval churches, this emblem expresses the Christian doctrine of the triunity of Almighty God. Positively, two affirmations are made about each person of the Godhead. Reading from the center circle outward: God (Deus) is (est) Father (P is for Pater), God is Son (F is for Filius), and God is Holy Spirit (SS is for Spiritus Sanctus). Reading from the outer circles inward: The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. Negatively, two affirmations are likewise made about each person of the Godhead. Reading clockwise and counterclockwise from one outer circle to the other two: The Father is not (non est) the Son or the Holy Spirit, the Son is not the Father or the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father or the Son. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. Lord Jesus, the burdens of my life are too great for me. I know that my heaviest burden is my own sin. My sin has made me estranged from God and it is too great for me to carry. You say to all sinners, including me, Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. These are the words my guilty conscience longs for. Help me Lord Jesus to understand and believe your loving promise that I can have rest from my sins. And even more, that I can know you and have eternal life. Amen. 6 September 29 October 1 - Women s Fall Retreat in Seabrook, WA September 30 October 1-9th Annual Church Music Symposium This Evening Pastor Nicoletti is continuing his sermons on 2 Corinthians. Each Sunday evening prior to the worship service, musicians begin to play or sing at 5:40 p.m. Men of Faith Oktoberfest September 24th, :00 pm - 5:00 pm The Ken Kvale s have graciously agreed to host our 7th annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 24th from 2-5 pm. Our guest speaker is Nathan Betts. Nathan is an apologist with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM). Nathan completed his undergraduate degree at Tyndale University and his MA in Bible and Ministry at King s College London. Nathan and his wife, Brittany, live locally in Bonney Lake, WA, with their two young children. Oktoberfest has become the kick-off for our next book to read and discuss together in small groups. In preparation for the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther s Ninety-Five theses October 31, 2017 this year we will be reading Heralds of the Reformation: Thirty Biographies of Sheer Grace, written by our own Dick Hannula. In thirty short biographies, Heralds of the Reformation tells the important story of the struggle between the theological authorities and the men and women who refused to keep quiet about the sheer grace of the Gospel. The book is $10 and is now available for sale in the Narthex. A sign-up sheet will be available in the Narthex on September 4, 11, and 18. The cost for the food and beverages is $8 for adults and $5 under age 21. Teenage sons are most welcome. Join us for our fall classic. If you have any questions, please call Chad Isenberger. Tuesday Ladies Bible Study Ladies, you are invited to join us on Tuesdays, beginning September 13 from 9:30 to noon. We meet in the Women in the Church (WIC) Room 117, downstairs in the church building. This fall we will be studying the Letters of Peter using a newly published study guide written by our own Dr. Bob Rogland. In his commendation on the back of the book Pastor Rayburn writes, What lay people, interested in knowing the Bible better, need and want is a study guide neither overly technical nor too simple, something that will genuinely advance their understanding of the Word of God. Dr. Robert Rogland s Bible Study Guides occupy that happy place between a full-fledged commentary and something suitable only for a novice. Solid exegesis, clearly presented, with helpful study questions added make for ideal guides for Bible study. If you need more information or want to order a book ($10), please contact Dawn Darby. It doesn't matter that you didn't make it last week's Sunday school, or that you might not be able to come to training on Saturday, or that you may be unable to make it every single Monday for the rest of your life. This brief training condenses and adapts the training some of us received earlier this year, to make it the perfect orientation for service on Monday nights with Better English on Sixth. The Word of Faith Class (Sanctuary) "Sinatra and Solomon. The Great American Songbook and the Great Hebrew Songbook. This class led by Robert Case is an exegetical look at the romance of the Song of Songs illuminated by the best American popular songs of the 20 th century. High School Sunday School (North Half of DeSoto Hall) The high school class continues in its series on 1&2 Samuel. Better English on Sixth ESL Sunday School (Room 304) This class led by Tim Bentson and Andrew Milton is going through The Gospel of John: Who is Jesus, an ESL Bible study by J. Men of Faith, Morning Prayer Meetings There are opportunities to meet with fellow Men of Faith for prayer each week: Wednesday morning with Phil Perkins: We meet at Treos Cafe in Old Town Tacoma, 2312 North 30 th at 6:00 am. This meeting, which originated six years ago has continuously focused on the Psalms. Thursday morning with Thom Wilson at 6:30 am at the church. We are reading and praying through Ian Hamilton's book The Faith Shaped Life. A Reminder about Parking

Nursing Mothers In addition to the nursery rooms, Room #117 the Women in the Church room, is open and available for your convenience during all Worship Services. The service can be seen and heard in the WIC room. Meals on Wheels The purpose of Meals on Wheels is to provide meals for those families needing extra help due to illness, death in the family, or the arrival of newborns. If you know of a need, please contact Kathy Haass, Alisha Bennett or the church office. More participants are needed. If you would like to serve in this ministry (usually no more than one or two times per year) please contact Kathy or Alisha to be added to the roster. Thank you! Women to Women Ministry There is a ministry of mentoring by women to women here at Faith. If you would like to meet with a woman for this purpose, you may contact Debbie Mellott and she will put you in touch with one of the women providing this ministry.
