Lord s Day September 16, 2018 FAITH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Presbyterian Church in America 620 South Shirley Tacoma, Washington Ministers: Robert S. Rayburn, Steven A. Nicoletti fpc@faithtacoma.org

Lord s Day September 16, 2018 Upon entering the sanctuary please maintain silence for the sake of the congregation s preparation for worship, and please make sure electronic devices are off or using silent mode. Prelude Panis Angelicus.. César Franck ( ) arr. Henry Geehl Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven No. 76 (Psalm 103) +Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer O most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; Who pardons all such as truly repent and turn to you; we humbly confess our sins and implore your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart fervently; neither have we loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not done justly, nor loved mercy, nor walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, according to your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out our iniquity. Create in us a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within us. Cast us not away from your presence; and take not your Holy Spirit from us. Restore unto us the joy of your salvation; and uphold us with your free Spirit. Amen. Assurance of Pardon If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities. Psalm 130:3, 7-8 (ESV)

*Hymn of Faith in Jesus Christ Thou Hidden Source of Calm Repose No. 510 *Confession of Faith Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings Theme from Symphony #3... Johannes Brahms ( ) Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Congregational Petitions and the Lord s Prayer Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV) Scripture Lesson John 17:20-26; Jude (ESV pp. 903; 1027) Sermon Distinct but Inseparable: Unity and Purity The Lord s Supper The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord s Supper. Lord Jesus, you say that you and you alone are the way, the truth, and the life. You welcome all who are weary and burdened to come to you and promise to give them rest. You also say that those who come to you must be prepared to follow you, even at great cost. Help me, Lord Jesus, to believe what you say and to resolve to follow you whatever the cost. There are reasons enough for me to

come to you. I admit that I am a sinner, more sinful than I ever dared to admit. But in you I find a greater love than I ever dared hope for. Thank you for your suffering and death in the place of sinners to pay their debt. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and confess you, Jesus Christ, as my Savior and my Lord. Amen. O love of God, how strong and true! Eternal, and yet ever new; Uncomprehended and unbought, beyond all knowledge and all thought. O love of God, how deep and great! Far deeper than man s deepest hate; Self-fed, self-kindled like the light, changeless, eternal, infinite. O heavenly love, how precious still, in days of weariness and ill, In nights of pain and helplessness, to heal, to comfort, and to bless! O wide embracing, wondrous love! We read you in the sky above, We read you in the earth below, in seas that swell, and streams that flow. We read you best in him who came to bear for us the cross of shame; Sent by the Father from on high, our life to live, our death to die. We read your pow r to bless and save, e en in the darkness of the grave; Still more in resurrection light, we read the fullness of your might. Choristers Rehearsals Starting this Wednesday Calling all singers, aspiring singers, makers of joyful noise and those who wish they could, between the ages of 5 and 14. Choristers rehearsals are starting up again on September 19. Mrs. McMillan and Mrs. Rayburn are teaming up for your first semester back with the hope that Mrs. Rayburn eventually will learn enough to be able wisely to guide these young people on her own perhaps even by January! We are sticking with Wednesday evening rehearsals during prayer meeting and are planning to divide the group into two. Children ages 5 9 will begin the evening for rehearsal from 7:00 7:30 pm. Children ages will begin their rehearsal at 7:30, stopping at 8:15. We hope this will give each age group exactly what they need to increase their musicality their knowledge of and love for music. We want ALL our children to love singing to learn how to sing and how to sing well. Parents, please sign up your children in the narthex. Mothers Encouragement Group For Mothers Encouragement Group this year we will be reading Parenting: 14 Gospel Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family, by Paul David Tripp. You do not need to buy the book to participate, and there is no required homework! We will be reading the chapters within the group meetings and then discussing it together. We will also take time to hear one another s prayer requests and pray for each other. Please come to have some fellowship with other mothers, have a snack, and be encouraged. We meet every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month with some variation (see below for the exact dates), from 9:30-12:00 in the WIC room. Being late is no problem and is an expected part of mom life! Childcare is provided. Here are the dates for the 2018/2019 year: Sept. 20, Oct. 4, Oct. 18, Nov. 1, Nov. 15, Dec 6, Jan. 10, Jan. 24, Feb. 7, Feb. 21, March 7, March 21, Apr 11, Apr 25, May 9, May 23. 9 Men of Faith Oktoberfest October 6th, 2018; 2:00-5:00 pm Our 9th annual Oktoberfest will be on Saturday, October 6 th from 2-5 pm at the home of Ken Kvale. Our guest speaker this year will be Rev. David Scott, Senior Pastor at our sister church Resurrection Presbyterian in Puyallup. David and his wife Sara and their four children are well known to our congregation as David was on staff here at Faith in 2007 as Assistant Pastor, as he prepared to plant the church in Puyallup. A sign-up sheet will be available in the narthex on September 16 th, 23 rd, and 30 th. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 under age 21. Teenage sons are most welcome. Join us for a delicious German cookout. If you have any questions, please contact Chad Isenberger. Adult Sunday School The Women of Faith Class I (Room 117) Martyrs and Missionaries and the Persecuted Church: In this Sunday School class we are reading stories and books about past and current missionaries and persecuted Christians around the world. We want to be aware of the plight of the persecuted church of today and to pray for them regularly. The Women of Faith Class II (Covenant High School Office) We are studying together the book Union with Christ by Rankin Wilbourne. The Word of Faith Class (Sanctuary) Many of us have heard of prominent evangelical leaders who have converted either to the Roman Catholic Church or the Orthodox Church. Most recent, for example, the host of the radio program Bible Answer Man, Hank Hanegraaff, converted to Orthodoxy. Usually, the argument given is that those two churches represent a more ancient and authentic form of the Christian faith. Elder Mike Pfefferle, making special use of Covenant College Professor Ken Stewart s award winning new book In Search of Ancient Roots, will examine this claim. You will find this a fascinating and very valuable introduction to early Christianity. High School Sunday School (North Side of DeSoto Hall) Pastor Nicoletti and the high school class continue the second unit of their ongoing study of Dante s Divine Comedy: Dante s Purgatorio: An Allegorical Study of Repentance. Better English on Sixth ESL Sunday School (Room 304) Kathy Lewis facilitates the Better English class where individual American partners help each international who wishes to read or discuss material at an appropriate level of English. Please contact Kathy or Jonathan Nichols if you would like to become a partner or assist Better English on Sixth in any way. Men of Faith, Morning Prayer Meetings & Devotions There are opportunities to meet with fellow Men of Faith for prayer and devotions each week: Wednesday mornings with Phil Perkins: We meet at Old Town Anthem coffee shop at 2312 N. 30th St., Tacoma. This group meets at 6 am for Bible reading and prayer. After several years we continue to focus solely on the Psalms which serve as a life guide. One of the ancient church fathers, Athanasius wrote, Whatever your particular need or trouble, from this same book (the Psalms) you can select a form of words to fit it, so that you...learn the way to remedy your ill. Thursday mornings with Thom Wilson, 6:30 am at the church. Join us in studying through the Book of Acts as we pray for our concerns and the world around us.

College & Career Community Groups College & Career is a young adult ministry of Faith Presbyterian Church. The goal is to provide opportunities for young adults 18 and older, whether single or married, to do life together throughout the week and form deep Christian friendships. C&C Community Groups are weekly small groups that meet in a home for dinner and fellowship. We have one group that meets on Thursdays at Nate and Rachel Shelden s home at 6:30, and another group that meets on Tuesdays at Isaac and Elsie Dye s home at 6:30. For more details, or if you re interested in joining a C&C Community Group, please contact one of us and we ll help you get connected! Meals on Wheels The purpose of Meals on Wheels is to provide meals for those families needing extra help due to illness, death in the family, adoption or childbirth. If you know of a need, please contact Kathy Haass, Alisha Bennett or the church office. Meal needs will be requested via TNT (This n That), the church s announcement system. To receive TNT s, please contact the church office. Thank you! Nursing Mothers In addition to the nursery rooms, Room #117 the Women in the Church room, is open and available for your convenience during all Worship Services. The service can be seen and heard in the WIC room. Hearing Assistance If you would like a device to help with hearing the worship service, please see a Deacon. Explanation of the Cover Symbol In the Greek language of the early Christian era abbreviations were typically the first and last letters of words, often with a superscription to indicate the missing letters. IC is a standard abbreviation of IHCOYC, the Greek Jesus, XC the abbreviation of XPICTOC, Christ; NIKA means He conquers. The symbol then reads Jesus Christ Conquers by the Cross or Jesus Christ Victor.
