Level II will work with geography materials showing the cities in Israel during Jesus time, work on their projects for the Alternative Christmas Market, and reflect on portions of the Lord s Prayer. 6 with countless gifts of love STEWARDSHIP: Sharing our Stories and Blessings - Diana Thomas When I was a little girl, I LOVED having those little pledge envelopes where I would put some coins in the envelope and drop it in the plate. It gave me an incredible sense of completion.. and I got to do it each week. But as an adult, I made other decisions about pledging. Before coming to Trinity almost 12 years ago, my husband, Bill and I attended a local evangelical church for 20 years and NEVER pledged. Yet, during our first Trinity Pledge Drive, I knew we would pledge here. The question is WHY? Why had we not pledged at our church of 20 years; and why do we pledge at Trinity now? In our previous church, we heard the plea for money often. I suppose, after a while, you just hear the words, but aren t really listening. These words talked about tithing.you know.giving 10% of your earnings to the church. Well.I knew we weren t doing that, but we were giving what we felt we could, and we did it consistently, even though we didn t officially pledge. Then an interesting thing happened to me. My friend and I went to a Women of Faith Gathering in San Diego. In those days I went to many Evangelical Events where we sang, raised our hands, praised God and prayed over one another and prayed over the world. The San Diego Sports Arena was filled to capacity when we sat down in a distant row in the balcony. A woman sat down next to me.a stranger to me and turned to me and said You need to tithe to your church. Seriously, those were the first words out of her mouth when she turned to me. She continued to tell me that I need to tithe 10% of my gross income. I must have looked like a deer caught in head lights.i know that I stopped breathing for a second or two. But she continued: Well she said you can start the plan by paying all your bills first, then paying 10% of what s left. After a while, she continued, you can move up to paying 10% of your net income before you pay your bills; and your goal will be to pay 10% of your gross income. I think I just sat there numbly nodding my head while looking at her and smiling. Luckily, the program started and my focus turned away from her. But.and I am not making this up.at every break and intermission she reminded me that I need to tithe. I remind you that I had never seen this woman before this event. When you are an Evangelical Christian you take this kind of encounter seriously. Was this an Angel of God coming to set my life on the right path? If I didn t tithe, was I going to end up in Hell? So the minute I got home, I told Bill what had happened and asked him what he thought about it. Bill, being less melodramatic than I am, considered for a moment or two then calmly but authoritatively said: We are definitely not going to hell and we are, quite frankly, doing the best we can with what we ve got. So that was the end of that discussion. But then we came to Trinity. Something happened here for us. Here, we found ourselves feeling connected to God, and to those around us in the pews and in the pulpit. And THAT was when we knew we would pledge at Trinity. And the thing about Trinity.we are not asked to give specific amounts or percentages of our income..we are merely asked to pray about it, examine our priorities, and give as generously as we are able. No guilt-trip.just give what you are able. In the 12 years we have been at Trinity, Bill and I have pledged every year. And here is what is important: every single year we re-examine our cirucumstances. We do our best to keep increasing our pledge but sometimes, we simply can t do it and there have been a few years when we actually had to decrease the amount of our pledge. But, here s THE most important thing--- regardless of the amount, EVERY YEAR WE PLEDGE---it is a statement that we belong to this church community, and we want this church and its activities to flourish and grow. And we want to be connected to all of it. In my first year of teaching (over 44 years ago), I was encouraged to join a teachers union. Not knowing which one to join, I asked one of the well-respected teachers of the school which of the unions would give me the most benefits and perks. Well.he gave me an answer that went to my core and that I have lived by ever since. He said.it is not about the benefits or the perks that you receive but instead, you need to carefully examine the core values and intentions and methods of anything that you join. Look at what each group stands for. Find the one that best reflects who you are and join it.. the one that reflects who you are and join it. In Trinity, Bill and I have found a church that best reflects who we are. And that is why we pledge. 6

8 advent & christmas ADVENT BOOKLETS BY THE REV. CHRISTINE MCSPADDEN AVAILABLE AT THE WELCOME TABLE After many months of searching for our new rector we are so pleased that our wait is over, just in time for the Advent season. As it turns out, Christine McSpadden, Trinity s new rector, has just published a brand new Advent daily reflection booklet that she titled, What AreYou Waiting For? We hope you will embark on this seasonal journey by reflecting on these daily meditations to bring a richer quality and depth to your understanding and perception of waiting as a lively and life-giving facet of faith. What AreYou Waiting For? booklets are available at the Welcome Table with a suggested donation of $5.00. The second book recommendation is Richard Rohr s The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation. The book will be available to purchase at the Welcome Table, and we will be drawing from the book for our Advent Series. Drawing from Scripture, theology, and the deepest insights of mystics, philosophers, and sages throughout history, Fr. Rohr presents a compelling alternative to aloof and fairytale versions of God: One God, belovedly in communion, as All-Vulnerable, All-Embracing, and All- Given to you and me. The Divine Dance makes accessible and practicable the Christian tradition s most surprising gift God as Community as Friendship.. as Dance. Contact: Judith Torres, jtorres@trinitysb.org ADVENT SERIES - BIRTHING THE CHRIST WITHIN Drawing on Christine McSpadden s meditations for Advent, What AreYou Waiting For? and Richard Rohr s The Divine Dance, we will explore three themes: Connecting with our divine inheritance Experiencing God s unconditional love Accepting our mandate to be the Christ in communion with each other and all creation We will meet three Sundays after church from 11:30-12:30pm. Consider the possibility that We Are the Ones We ve Been Waiting For as we keep leaning into community at Trinity: November 27 - in the Parish Hall December 11 - in the Parish Hall December 18 - in the church school multipurpose room Both books are available at the Welcome Table, but no reading is required! 8 THE GIVING TREE BEGINS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27 Christmas is the wonderful time of year when we can celebrate what God has so generously provided us, and share it with less fortunate members of our community. Every year Trinity parishioners provide colorfully wrapped Christmas gifts for residents of PATH Santa Barbara, and we know your generosity will shine again. On November 27, the Trinity Giving Tree will be in the Sanctuary. Simply pluck off an ornament to choose the size and gender of sweatshirt and socks you wish to give. On December 20th Trinity elves will pick them up at noon and magically transport them in time to celebrate the holy birth of our Savior. MERRY CHRISTMAS! ADVENT ORGAN SERIES THREE SUNDAYS IN ADVENT 3:30pm December 4, 11 & 18 Explore the new liturgical year in a series of three afternoon concerts illustrating the diverse tonal landscape of Trinity s 4-manual pipe organ. Trinity s Minister of Keyboard Music, Thomas Joyce will present three distinct programs of an hour and fifteen minutes in length, each featuring a guest musician. Running the gamut of Western music history, the audience will have the chance to absorb organ literature that is very old, quite new, and composed somewhere in the middle. For the final concert, Thomas will conclude the series with the concert premiere of his own newly composed Psalm 24 for solo organ, Lift up ye heads, O ye gates. In joyful and prayerful spirits, Advent and its preparation for Christmas will be intended as a meditative journey through the sacred mysteries of the season. Suggested donation of $10 for adults/$5 for children and youth. Free chocolate Advent calendars will be available at the console following each concert for children who would like to join in listening quietly to beautiful music at Trinity!

12 PSALM 98 REFRAIN Sing to the Lord a new song, for the Lord has done marvelous things. The right hand and the holy arm of the Lord have secured the victory. REFRAIN The Lord has made known this victory and has openly shown righteousness in the sight of the nations. The Lord remembers mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. REFRAIN Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. Sing to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the voice of song. REFRAIN With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout with joy before the Sovereign, the Lord. Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, the lands and those who dwell therein. REFRAIN Let the rivers clap their hands, and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, who is coming to judge the earth. In righteousness shall the Lord judge the world and the peoples with equity. REFRAIN OFFERTORY ANTHEM TEXT Lord, I keep so busy praisin my Jesus, Ain got time to die.
