We believe that as people of God, we can all share in God's love; a love that is inclusive, ever abundant and meant to be expressed through our action in the world. We are delighted to have you with us and hope you will come back often. Open Communion: From whatever tradition you come and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome at our table. You will find simple directions on how to participate in the worship bulletin. Gluten-Free wafers are available, just ask when the bread is presented to you. Prayer Ministers are available during communion at the 10am service. Proceed to the back of the church to receive prayer and laying on of hands. Children & Youth: Trinity offers religious formation for ages 3½ -12 through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Children gather on Sundays starting at 9am in the church school behind the sanctuary. Trinity Youth Group includes all 7th- 12th graders, and meets approximately twice each month, usually on Sunday afternoons. See Parish Notes for upcoming activities. Children at Communion: Children are brought into the church during the Offertory Hymn to join us for Holy Communion. At this point, you are welcome to gather your children from the nursery to be with you. It is a season that exists for Easter. The point of Lent is not to be a 40-day period of feeling bad about oneself. The point of Lent is to prepare oneself for the joys and glories of Easter. One of my favorite Psalm verses is also used as a Lenten antiphon in some monasteries. It goes like this: Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless; * give me life in your ways. [Psalm ] I use this phrase as a kind of mantra during the Lenten season. It helps me remember that the point of Lent is not about feeling guilty. The point of Lent is to refocus my attention. As Lent approaches, I encourage you ask that God turn your eyes from watching what is worthless and attend to God and God s world and your own inner life in all their radiance. As poet Jane Hirschfield says, You don t have to add anything to reality to feel awe, or to feel respect, or to see the radiance of existence. Radiance simply is. Let your Lent be a time to experience radiance. Turn your eyes from watching what is worthless. Let God and life s sweetness in by giving up, taking on, or serving. And do it in the service of Easter and its implications for all of us and the world. ~ Gary Hall Trinity Episcopal Church 1500 State Street Santa Barbara Ca

By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ.

3 take note children and youth The Liturgy Design Team has decided to do Maundy Thursday differently than in years past. It will still center around the foot washing and Eucharist, but will omit the dinner and add a more formal stripping of the altar. The group suggested this change out of a sense that it was time to try something different and that, given all the extra energy taken up with search and transition work, the dinner would be too labor intensive this year. This year s liturgy promises to be beautiful and meaningful in a new, if different, way. FREE NOONTIME CONCERT FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 12:15-12:45PM Divert from your usual lunch time ritual to hear some live chamber music for woodwinds with Catherine Del Russo, oboe; Joanne Kim, clarinet and William Wood, bassoon. Works by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, and Jacques Ibert. Enjoy 30 minutes of beautiful, lighthearted music to soothe the soul and lift your spirits. Free will offerings will be accepted. A percentage of the proceeds to benefit Trinity Music Program. TRINTY BACKSTAGE CONCERT SATURDAY, MARCH 3, 8pm Alan Thornhill, guitarist, singer, and song writer from Ojai will perform. For information and table reservations: $10 donation at the door. SCIENCE & RELIGION Monday, March 5, 7-8:30 Dr. Amanda Sparkman will be addressing the timely topic, Using Animals in Research: Good, Bad, or Ugly But Justifiable? The presentation will provide an introduction to the controversial issue of animal research by taking a look at the current trends in animal research as well as examining the various approaches to the morality of using animals for human benefit. Dr. Sparkman is an associate professor in the Biology Department at Westmont College. She specializes in ecology and evolutionary biology. Everyone is invited. An offering will be received.
