1 Parish notes WELCOME TO ALL VISITORS! Trinity is a place where you will find open minds, open hearts and open doors. We believe that as people of God, we can all share in God's love; a love that is inclusive, ever abundant and meant to be expressed through our action in the world. We are delighted to have you with us and hope you will come back often. If you would like to learn more about life here at Trinity please: Fill out a Welcome Card Join us for coffee on the Labyrinth Plaza Parish Notes: These pages contain information about today s worship and our upcoming meetings and events. Gluten-Free wafers are available for those who need them, just ask for them when the bread is presented to you. Prayer Ministers are available during communion at the 10am service. Proceed to the back of the church to receive prayer and laying on of hands. Open Communion: From whatever tradition you come and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome at our table. You will find simple directions on how to participate in the worship bulletin. Children & Youth: Trinity offers religious formation for ages 3½ -12 through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Children gather on Sundays starting at 9am in the church school behind the sanctuary. A Note from the Worship Council Alleluia, Christ is risen! We continue proclaiming these opening words through the 50 days of Easter, sometimes called Eastertide, which ends on the day of Pentecost. You will notice a couple of changes in our worship services during this season. To follow up on our Lenten program Leaning Outward toward Community, and as a way of emphasizing the stewardship of time and talent, we will have members from the congregation speak very briefly on Sundays about how they put their faith into action. This practice called Minute for Mission aspires to help each of us think about how what we say and claim in worship gets put into practice in our daily lives. We are adding a final blessing of the people near the end of the service--a final benediction that fortifies us to go out to serve in the world. And we are now doing the Dismissal nearer the font, following the closing hymn, emphasizing our ministries rooted in baptism and that we are a people gathered and sent in Christ s name. HEALING TOUCH SPIRITUAL MINISTRY (HTSM) AT TRINITY 2nd Sunday of the month in the Chapel, right after the 10am service HTSM is a sacred healing art that flows from Christian tradition since the time of the ancient church. Its practitioners recognize that the source of all healing is God. In the laying-on of hands, there is a flow of God s healing grace to the person who is receiving. Growing out of the nursing-based Healing Touch program, HTSM uses prayer, gentle touch, and healing essential oils. HTSM is found in churches, retreat centers, hospitals, hospices, and other settings as spiritual healing with roots in our Judeo-Christian heritage. If you would like a visit from a Trinity Healing Touch Spiritual Minister, you may contact Nina Zimmer, or nddz@aol.com TRINITY BACKSTAGE PRESENTS THE HARMONY ALL STARS Saturday, June 10, 8pm One of our most popular shows, The Harmony All Stars is a performance in the round with some of Trinity s favorite singer/songwriters. Doug and Kate will be joined by their pals Jimmy McVay from Los Angeles and Caren Armstrong from the Bay Area. Together, these four musicians will entertain with original songs and covers that feature fine harmony. You ll most likely be able to sing along on a few. Bring a friend and have some fun. For more information, and table reservations for four or more, call THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF HARDING SCHOOL CINCO DE MAYO! Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time, donated a Silent Auction item or attended the Cinco de Mayo Carnival at Harding School. The Foundation raised $8,300 which will go towards much needed classroom supplies and field trips for the children. Your support is greatly appreciated. UCSB IDEAS Thanks You! UCSB IDEAS students are very grateful for the support of Trinity parishioners. Thank you for stopping by their table last week to speak with them and to contribute to their fundraiser for commencement stoles. They are well on their way to meeting their goal thanks to Santa Barbara s amazing faith community. For more information about this undocumented student group, contact member Karla Lopez at lopezkarlae@gmail.com. our mission As God s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ. 2
3 Dear Members and Friends of Trinity, take note As of April 30, I will be taking a pastoral leave to be with my family during a time of crisis. I have been consulting with Bishop Diane Bruce and she has recommended that I take a month leave. While I am away, Claude Garciacelay, our Senior Warden, will be in charge and the Rev. Laurel Johnston will be clergy in charge. I will be working on some projects remotely from San Francisco but will need to reschedule meetings and other obligations. Claude, Laurel and I will be in constant contact keeping our wonderful life together humming. I am grateful and buoyed by the unflagging support of the Vestry and for the prayers, concern and support of this incredible community. In the Eastertide hope of the resurrection, Christine+ The Rev. Christine McSpadden Rector, Trinity Episcopal Church Santa Barbara LANDSCAPE PROJECT ONLY $7,066 SHY OF GOAL! SUMMER SACRED ARTS NEEDS YOU! Our summer program for children at Trinity, Summer Sacred Arts, starts on June 11th and runs through the first week in September. Summer Sacred Arts, which is held in the Guild Hall during the 10:00 a.m. service, offers lots of fun ways to get involved with our fantastic Trinity kids. No experience or planning is required - just sign up for a week or two of enjoying art on Sunday mornings, and we will provide all the materials you need to have a great time crafting with the children. It s easy, it s fun, and it s intergenerational! What could be better? Sign up on the Labyrinth Plaza to help! Questions? Contact Elizabeth Hess, ehess@trinitysb.org. WHO IS GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL THIS YEAR? Trinity recognizes its graduates at the end of every school year and we don t want to miss anyone! For more information, please contact Libby at lyardi@trinitysb.org. children and youth CONTACTS: Nursery/Toddler care Marisa Brenninkmeyer, nursery@trinitysb.org Church School ages 3 12 Elizabeth Hess, ehess@trinitysb.org Youth ages Libby Yardi, lyardi@trinitysb.org TODAY IN THE CHURCH SCHOOL Children at Trinity meet most Sundays for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program (CGS). Since each Level of the program covers a range of ages, often several lessons are offered each Sunday, with most children taking part in only one. Today Level I will see how the chalice is prepared for the celebration of Eucharist, and work with familiar materials. Level II will work with materials highlighting the main moments of our celebration of Eucharist, reflect on the meaning of the breaking and sharing of bread in Eucharist, and reflect on our proclamation of the Mystery of Faith - Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again. Level III will work with materials to explore the sacramental rites of the church. TRINITY YOUTH GROUP (7TH 12TH GRADES) Upcoming Meeting: June 4, 12-2pm Potluck BBQ at La Mesa Park Join us as we bid farewell to our graduating seniors. We ll celebrate their ministry at Trinity and send them off into the world knowing they are loved and have a community to come home to. Please bring something to share. Questions or comments? Ask Libby (lyardi@trinitysb.org). 3

The new cabinet has room for more name tags to accommodate our growth and it is more portable for ease of set-up. Thank you Loren for this beautiful and highly functional new name tag kiosk. TRINITY READS Adult Formation s recommended follow-up book to our Lenten series is America s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America by Jim Wallis, forward by Brian Stevenson. Jim Wallis, the nation s preeminent evangelical prophetic teacher and preacher, sends a tough love letter to America, demanding and daring the church not only to repent of the original sin of racism but to join the fight against all forms of racial injustice. I encourage everyone who is concerned about our democracy and who desires to see the church live out its true mission of love and justice to read this prophetic epistle. The Episcopal shield brings together some of the Church s history, and offers a brief history lesson through its design. The Red Cross on the White Field is the Cross of St. George (the Patron Saint of England), which points to our historical roots in the Church of England and ties to the Anglican Communion. The blue quadrant includes nine small crosses which symbolize the nine original American Dioceses that met in Philadelphia in 1789 to adopt the constitution of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America. The crosslets are formed as an x-shaped cross of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, in tribute to the Scottish Church s role in ordaining the first American Bishop, Samuel Seabury, in The colors red, white and blue symbolize (red) the sacrifice of Christ and Christian Martyrs, (white) the purity of the Christian Faith and (blue) the humanity of Christ received from the Blessed Virgin Mary, as well as the colors of the American flag. 6
