Pentecost is the 50th day after Easter, or the eighth Sunday of the Easter Season. It is observed in commemoration of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples in the form of cloven tongues of fire. Throughout Scripture, fire signals the presence of the Divine God s self-revelation as in the burning bush, the descent of God on Mt. Sinai, the fiery chariot of Daniel, and in the prophecy of John the Baptist, that one will come who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Trinity s children learn in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd that the Holy Spirit comes to us and leaves gifts gifts that empower us to bring forth God s mission in the world. Children in Level III (grades 4-6) have reflected on the gifts of the Spirit mentioned in Isaiah, and invite each of us to discern a particular gift of the Spirit alive in us, and then light a candle in thanksgiving for the Spirit s generous and continuous outpouring of gifts. Richard presents Experiencing Awe: An Opening to the Transcendent. Most of us have had experiences that have filled us with awe. Yet this fairly common and often powerful experience has been little studied by the scientific community. What is awe? How might it be related to an experience of transcendent realities and of God? Is this an unique human phenomenon? These are questions we will explore through use of visual aids and sharing. Dr. Richard holds advanced degrees in theology and pastoral counseling, a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and is the cofounder of the Science and Religion Study Group. An offering will be received. For further information, contact Dr. Richard at starryrobert@aol.com or our mission As God s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ. 2

3 take note MEETING CHURCH AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME - Exploring Faith in the Episcopal Tradition Wednesday, June 7, 5:30-7:30pm at Trinity Join us for a meal, fellowship and study. For our final meeting we will have a presentation on spiritual practice by Ann Jaqua, spiritual director and Trinity member. Please RSVP by calling the office at (805) or Betty Wenzel, bwenzel@trinitysb.org DID YOU KNOW? The design of Trinity s Labyrinth (Cross and Rose) dates back to the 12th Century. Walking the Labyrinth is an ancient practice that symbolizes the spiritual journey. It is not a maze. A maze uses tricks and turns to challenge the walker. Instead, a labyrinth has a single entrance and a single exit (some say representing birth and death) and the path, while it does meander, always leads to the Center. In walking the labyrinth as spiritual practice, one follows the three stages of spiritual journey that draw us to deeper union with God: the Purgative, the Illuminative and the Unitive. In the first phase, Purgative (shedding), one lets go of habits, routines, and restrictions that keep one separate from God. The second stage, Illuminative, is the growing awareness of God s presence as companion in the journey and the peace that flows from this companionship, and the third is Unitive, the experience of union with God. Labyrinths became popular in the 12th century in Europe as they stood in for making an annual pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Trinity has replicated the design of the labyrinth found in the Gothic 12th Century Chartres Cathedral in France. Fellow Parishioners: notes from the vestry Chris and I were out of town last Sunday so we missed Anne Howard s sermon. I will have submitted this short piece for Parish Notes before the podcast has been uploaded for listening. However, I have heard some brief reports on our Preacher-in-Residence s words from the pulpit. Just the mere notion of footprints is provocative. I think of freshly made impressions and memories left behind by Christine McSpadden. I think of the indelible impression that the search process made on me last year as a member of the vestry during a challenging time of transition and renewal. And of course, I still feel the heartbreak from circumstances having stomped down upon Christine, her children and our Trinity family. As I move through the third year of my 3-year term on the vestry I can say with absolute honesty that I continue to serve with people who unquestionably love this parish. We pray always that spirit will shine light on our work together so that the decisions that we make on behalf of this parish will leave lasting impressions and memories that speak of profound trust, wisdom and renewal. For the past 150 years, challenges have been faced bravely, thoughtfully and prayerfully by the people of this parish. May we follow their footsteps in our current quest for renewal. And, as we face new challenges might our trust in God lead us as we move forward filled with the hope and optimism that is a part of who we are as a community of faithful people. Stephen Singleton Junior Warden Anne Howard s sermon is available in podcast format on the home page (trinitysb. org) under Worship>Sunday Sermon Trinity Santa Barbara. AN UPDATE ON CHRISTINE Senior Warden Claude Garciacelay spoke with Christine over the Memorial Day weekend. She expressed continued thanks for the leave time these past weeks. Claude reported that her life is still in a rough place but she sends her love and holds Trinity in her prayers. Claude assured her that she is in ours. The vestry has been advised of Christine s plans for moving her possessions from the rectory and her Trinity office this month. Your continued words of support and affection may be expressed via addressed to cmcspadden@trinitysb.org (valid until June 30) or handwritten notes may be addressed to Christine and mailed to or left in the church office. Submitted by Stephen Singleton, Junior Warden PRAYER & SHARING CIRCLE June 11 after 8 & 10am Services We at Trinity find ourselves on a bridge between what was and what is to come. We mourn Christine s departure and pray for her and her family and also begin looking toward the future for our community. During this time, we can find comfort and support in God and one another by praying, sharing where we are on this bridge, and listening to one another. All are invited to a time of prayer and sharing on June 11 after both services. 3
