Tom and Beth have worshiped at Trinity with their daughter Rachel Van Mullem and Ethan and Noah, since his retirement in THE REV. MICHAEL CORRIGAN TO JOIN AS PASTORAL ASSOCIATE Michael Corrigan will be joining the staff of Trinity as the Pastoral Associate. Raised up for ordination by this parish, Michael has served as Chaplain at Cottage Hospital and as an assisting priest at Trinity and neighboring parishes. Joining the staff part-time, he will have a special focus on pastoral care, visiting, and teaching. After filling in as Priest in Charge during the upcoming season of Lent at St. Mark s, Los Olivos, he will fold into the liturgical rota at Trinity. We are so grateful for the many skills he brings to the team and for his strong and gentle pastoral presence. FIRE AND SMOKE DAMAGE AT ISLAMIC CENTER OF SANTA BARBARA We were saddened and alarmed to hear of the fire on Sunday night. Trinity Church has reached out to Imam Yama following the smoke damage from the fire at the warehouse complex that houses the Islamic Center of Santa Barbara. We have offered space for the community to meet and a donation to help them recover. You can make donations at: project/rebuild_the_santa_barbara_ mosque#/ TRINITY BACKSTAGE PRESENTS HENRY HIPKENS Saturday, March 4, 8:00 pm Henry lives in Nashville- but don t let that fool you--he is a completely unique songwriter and performer. His style might best be compared to Cole Porter or Hoagy Carmichael, yet it is completely modern and completely compelling. If you like gypsy jazz meets great standards with a great vocal delivery, you ll love Henry. For information and table reservations call LANDSCAPE FORUM SUNDAY, MARCH 5 Join us March 5 after both services for a Forum to introduce LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES: Final Phase First Impression. It s finally time to look beyond the walls of our beautiful historic building to our grounds on the corner of State and Micheltorena. Together we will create a lovely, water-wise garden to be enjoyed by parishioners and the surrounding community for many years to come. This project will conclude Trinity s Capital Campaign which called for sustainable landscaping and improved accessibility. Please join us to see the landscape plans, review the budget, and learn about fundraising opportunities. Some work will begin in March and we hope to see signs of a budding garden by spring. SUSTAINABLE TRINITY WANTS YOU! If you are interested in good stewardship of God s creation, our planet Earth, the Sustainable Trinity Committee welcomes your help and inspiration. We are planning a Sunday service and forums this spring in conjunction with Earth Day. Come and learn ways to support sustainability right here in our parish and in our homes and actions you can take to address current environmental issues and legislation. Please join us at our next meeting on Monday, March 6 at 5pm in the Trinity library. Sign up sheets are on the Welcome Table. For more information contact Jean Davis, jeanlangedavis@gmail.com. THANK YOUS A big thank you to Contractor Jim Purcell who repaired our hanging sconces in the church as a gift to Trinity. Kate Kelly s nephew, Jim, did this repair work in honor of the memory of Susan Decker. Thank you also goes to UCSB professor Dr. Matthew Turk who donated his recent talk about Artificial Intelligence to the Science and Religion ministry. We are grateful for these kind, generous and thoughtful gifts of time and expertise. our mission As God s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ. 2
3 lent at trinity LENT AT TRINITY: Join us for a rich series of events co-sponsored by Adult Formation and Justice and Outreach Councils Faith in Action Workshop with Jack Jezreel, founder of JustFaith Ministries. A dynamic, nationally-known speaker and advocate of social justice ministry, Jack will help us examine how we can put compassionate action behind our beliefs and values. Topics will include the biblical tradition that Jesus both inherited and enhanced; Pope Francis and Encuentro Seeking Neighbors and Building Bridges; and A New Way to Be a Church. Saturday, March 4 9am-3:30pm, Parish Hall, Lunch included Pre-Register NOW at trinitysb.org or coffee hour $15 pre-register and pay online at trinitysb. org $20 at the door Leaning Out Into Community Our four-week Lenten Series will consist of three integrated elements: Sundays after church we will listen to the voices of neighbors in our community who are in harm s way, including Black Lives Matter, IDEAS (undocumented UCSB students), and more. Sundays from March 12 - April 2, 11:25-12:30pm. Tuesday evenings we will educate ourselves about how to be effective and aware allies for people targeted by oppression, with facilitated training sessions on topics such as implicit bias and micro-aggression. Tuesdays from March 14-28, 6:30-8pm. Opportunities will be made available to engage with our neighbors through social ministry and advocacy efforts. Trinity Reads: Our recommended companion book for Lent and beyond is Progressive Faith and Practice: Thou Shalt Not Stand Idly By, by Roger L. Ray. This book articulates a progressive faith that combines the academic work of the modern biblical critical movement and the historical Jesus work of the Jesus Seminar applied within the life of an active parish. Ray strives to apply Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel s injunction ( Thou shalt not stand idly by ) to actively respond to the injustice, violence and discrimination in the world. Available for purchase at the Welcome Table. take note SCIENCE AND RELIGION MONDAY, MARCH 6, 7-8:30pm The Science and Religion Study Group is pleased to welcome Dr. Ken Kihlstrom, physics professor at Westmont College. Dr. Kihlstrom s talk is titled, The Universe Through The Eyes of Science. Over thousands of years the human race has looked to the heavens and tried to understand what was there. The Church has sometimes been a support and sometimes a hindrance to our knowledge. We ll look at the development of models of the solar system and the universe. We ll also see amazing pictures provided both by Westmont s Keck Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope. For further information, contact Bob Richard, or starryrobert@ aol.com An offering will be received. CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Wednesday, March 8, 7-8pm Is not this the fast that I choose:to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and to bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? (Isaiah 58:6-7) All are welcome. Judy Stevens will facilitate the session. WARMING CENTER CASSEROLES NEEDED! Trinity served over 230 people hot meals this past week during the rains. Our freezer is now empty. March 12 is our next chance of serving as a Warming Center. Please consider making a casserole for the freezer - hearty casseroles with chicken, pasta or beef. You can pick up an aluminum pan at the Welcome Table to fill and return to the office. This standard size will stack in the church freezer and will cook in a similar amount of time. Frozen purchased casseroles are also welcome. Contact: office@trinitysb.org children and youth CONTACTS: Nursery/Toddler care Marisa Brenninkmeyer, nursery@trinitysb.org Church School ages 3 12 Elizabeth Hess, ehess@trinitysb.org Youth ages Libby Yardi, lyardi@trinitysb.org TODAY IN THE CHURCH SCHOOL Children at Trinity meet most Sundays for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program (CGS). Since each Level of the program covers a range of ages, often several lessons are offered each Sunday, with most children taking part in only one. Today Level I will prepare for Lent by decorating and hiding their Alleluias, and reflect on the first verses of the 23rd Psalm. Level II will work with materials for the Parable of the Insistent Friend and discuss some of Jesus sayings, the Maxims, that give guidance on how we should live. Level III will return to their discussion of the Old Testament accounts of Abraham and Sarah. TRINITY YOUTH GROUP (7TH 12TH GRADES) Next Meeting: March 5, 3-5:30pm, 2 Rooms and A Boom! The Unitarian Society Youth Group invited us to play a friendly game of 2 Rooms and A Boom. This interesting game will test your social deduction abilities and you ll have a fun time too! Meet at USSB, 1535 Santa Barbara St, at 3pm and pick-up at 5:30pm. Upcoming: March 19, 3pm-6pm, Habitat for Humanity! Join us as we learn more about Habitat for Humanity. We ll explore the housing crisis, Affordable Housing, and how you can get involved in our community. Drop off at the Micheltorena entrance to the church school building, pick-up in the church parking lot at 6pm. Needed: Volunteers to cook dinner for our youth on April 2, April 30 and May 14. Please let Libby or a mentor know if you are interested in helping out. Questions or comments? Ask Libby (lyardi@trinitysb.org). 3
4 take note THANK YOU FROM JUDITH TORRES My heart is overflowing with the love, kindness and support I ve received from staff and parishioners these past few weeks as I ve said my farewell as the Coordinator of Shared Ministries here at Trinity Church. I will forever treasure the beautiful quilted contemplative tree made by Julia Laraway with kind words from all the outstanding Parish Council members I ve been SO fortunate to work with. My intention today is the same as it was when I came to you as a total stranger in June, To use my life in love and service to God. The opportunities I ve been given to support the extraordinary ministries of this congregation, to build an interfaith ministry and the friendships I ve made here have all been beyond my wildest imagination. So today I am filled with hope that a loving God will continue to use my life in extraordinary ways to create unity in the world and to be a quiet, clear voice for those that need mine. Much Love & Blessings to All, Judith Torres My plan is to stay in Santa Barbara. I d love to stay in touch. My address is: jtorres888@gmail.com Storyteller says THANK YOU to Trinity for the generous year end donation. Part of the funds were used to purchase Christmas gifts for our current adopted child, Yesenia and her siblings. The children were thrilled and the parents thankful as they could not afford gifts for their children. We are still collecting diapers, computer paper, paints and the other items on the Storyteller Wish List which is near a basket on the Welcome Table.
