1 Parish THE SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION EASTER SUNDAY APRIL 16, 2017 notes WELCOME TO ALL VISITORS! Trinity is a place where you will find open minds, open hearts and open doors. We are delighted to have you with us and hope you will come back often. If you would like to learn more about life here at Trinity please: Fill out a Welcome Card Join us for coffee on the Labyrinth Plaza The Worship Bulletin you received along with this handout will be your basic guide through this morning s liturgy. Parish Notes: The following pages contain information about today s worship and our upcoming meetings and events. Gluten-Free wafers are available for those who need them, just ask for them when the bread is presented to you. Prayer Ministers are available during communion at the 10am service. Proceed to the back of the church to receive prayer and laying on of hands. Open Communion: From whatever tradition you come and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome at our table. Although every Sunday celebrates the resurrection, this particular Sunday follows the forty day journey of Lent and the remembering and making real again of the events of Holy Week--from Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem, his arrest and Passion, his crucifixion and sealing of the tomb. While Easter highlights an historical moment of a mysterious and miraculous event, it is also a feeling of trust and hope. Jesus resurrection frees us from the way things seem like they have to be and opens a way forward beyond what we imagine. The resurrection releases us from cycles of retribution and offers a path of forgiveness and starting anew. The resurrection declares that our greatest fears, even of death, lie vanquished by the power and strength of God s ever-presence and love. Wherever you find yourself on your spiritual journey, bring your questions and concerns to this altar today and share in the holy meal with others looking for a life filled with meaning, purpose and relationship. TRINITY READS Adult Formation s recommended followup book to our Lenten series is America s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America by Jim Wallis, forward by Brian Stevenson. Jim Wallis, the nation s preeminent evangelical prophetic teacher and preacher, sends a tough love letter to America, demanding and daring the church not only to repent of the original sin of racism but to join the fight against all forms of racial injustice. I encourage everyone who is concerned about our democracy and who desires to see the church live out its true mission of love and justice to read this prophetic epistle. 4 take note community 4 SANCTUARY AT TRINITY Since January, when the Diocese of Los Angeles of the Episcopal Church designated itself as a sanctuary diocese, we have been reflecting on what it means for a church to act as sanctuary in general, and more specifically what it means for us to be sanctuary at Trinity. The Vestry, Parish Council and staff talked briefly about it at our Leadership Retreat. We have been discussing it during the Lenten program, and a special Task Force has formed made up of people particularly interested in finding out more about the issue. I would like to give you an update on these conversations and invite you into some of the things we are doing. Currently we are: Providing meeting space to support groups and programs aiding immigrants and undocumented persons. Providing resources to educate people on their constitutional rights and supplying references for legal counsel supporting immigrants and undocumented persons. Partnering with local agencies and faith groups to build a web of support for immigrants and undocumented persons. Working to raise awareness and better understand the complexity of the issues, so that the parish can be an impactful, informed, intentional and effective ally. Helping persons who feel threatened because of immigration status to fulfill daily tasks: For example, helping with getting groceries, carpooling children, giving rides to doctor s appointments. Designating a special fund to assist with issues and needs pertaining to supporting immigrants and undocumented persons (e.g. legal costs) to which anyone can contribute. Better understanding our constitutional protections as a church and helping those threatened to better understand their rights regarding cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). We will continue to update you during this fluid time as we develop plans and strategies, and identify ways that you can be of service to those of us who feel threatened and afraid. We will also direct you to resources to help keep you informed in this environment of rapidly changing immigration policies and practices. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God (Leviticus 19:34). In Christ, The Rev. Christine McSpadden, Rector WOMEN S CIRCLE SEEKING NEW MEMBERS Women s Circle, which meets every Thursday 10:30-noon, has 2 open seats available. We are starting a new book study, Pema Chodron s How to Meditate. We are also using Jack Kornfield s The Wise Heart as added inspiration. We split our time between spiritual reflection and personal sharing. We take turns leading the group discussion. Regular attendance is requested. Interested? The documentary is an hour long and it will be followed by an engaging discussion on the topic of resilience. The film is targeted to professionals and staff working with children, parents and families so all may understand the importance of resilience and the movement to help disrupt the cycle of addiction, violence, and disease. Registration is NOT required, just come wearing blue (National Child Abuse Prevention month color) and join us for an educational and inspiring event. Child Poverty in Santa Barbara A new report from the Public Policy Institute of California shows that Santa Barbara County had the highest poverty rate for young children (30.8%) in California from 2012 to 1014, the years for which the most recent data are available. Other central coast counties -- Monterey and San Benito -- had the second-highest child poverty rate. Although in Santa Barbara one may get a job that pays more than minimum wage the income is often less than needed to cover housing, food, medical bills, and the overall high cost of living in Santa Barbara. You can be part of the solution by supporting Harding School, Transition House, Storyteller Children s Center, the Food Bank and other Trinity Justice ministries which serve children and families in poverty. For more information about Trinity Ministries contact Laurinda Marshall or Craig Moore, Co-Chairs of the JOC Committee. Co-Chairs of the JOC Committee.
