SCIENCE & RELIGION Monday, November 7, 7pm The Science and Religion Study Group welcomes back Dr. Bob Richard who will be presenting a more detailed look at the last section of his paper titled The Afterlife. As Christians we affirm that consciousness does not end with the cessation of physical body functions, an affirmation common to other religions. But what evidence is there for this affirmation? We will look at experiential and empirical data that lend strong support for a belief in the afterlife. If you have not yet read Dr. Richard s paper, Neuroscience, Consciousness, and the Afterlife, please do so before the meeting. Contact him at starryrobert@aol.com, or at , to request an electronic copy. Retiring after practicing for over 34 years as a clinical psychologist in the S.F. Bay Area, Dr. Richard has a life-long interest in the science/faith dialogue. An offering will be received to help support the work of the study group. Our dear friend The Rev. David Barnhouse passed away on October 1. His service will be held at Trinity on Saturday, November 12 at 2pm. Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. Thanks to everyone who contributed to Carren s gift. She was given a check for $3,355 from the congregation. take note CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Wednesday, November 9, 7-8pm When he awoke from his dream about angels ascending and descending a ladder to heaven, Jacob said: Surely God is in this place, and I did not know it! By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ. 2

3 take note Would you like to share in our children s spiritual growth? Join us in the church school! After just one hour of training, you will be well equipped to join our children as they meet God in the atria on Sundays, a spiritually enlightening and fulfilling experience for children and adults alike (and it s fun, too!). Atrium volunteers usually spend 1-2 Sundays a month with our children, rejoining the sanctuary service during the Offertory. Unsure about missing some sermons? We can always use more hands in our Atrium Guild, an on-your-own-time opportunity to support our children by helping to maintain our church school materials and space. Contact: Emily Brothers, fill-in Coordinator of Children s Ministries, at ebrothers@trinityofsb.org or (805) WARMING CENTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Trinity Church is part of the interfaith community which opens its doors to the unsheltered during the cold and rainy months from November-March. We will be scheduled for about five weeks during those months and open when it rains or becomes too cold. Trinity volunteers help prepare and serve the dinner which includes a hot main dish, salad, bread and dessert, and also make PB&J for breakfast. The guests sleep in the Parish and Guild Halls which are staffed by the Warming Center program. If you can be part of this year s Warming Center team, please sign up at the Welcome Table or contact the church office at or office@trinitysb.org. WARMING CENTER CASSEROLES NEEDED! Trinity is collecting frozen casseroles in anticipation of the Winter Warming Center opening soon. Please consider making a casserole for the freezer - hearty casseroles with chicken, pasta or beef. You can pick up an aluminum pan at the Welcome Table to fill and return to the office. This standard size will stack in the church freezer and will cook in a similar amount of time. Frozen purchased casseroles are also welcome. 6 with countless gifts of love STEWARDSHIP: Sharing our Stories and Blessings - Colleen Sterne Our annual Stewardship conversation is a practical necessity. Like any family, we need to budget and plan for our life together with a clear understanding of our financial revenue and expenses. We have to consider together how we will use our financial resources in the image of Christ to do the best for our church family, our community and the world. It is also a time to consider our other resources, how we will commit our time and energy to various ministries within the church to which we may be called; we need a shared understanding of how the practical work of our life together as a parish will get done. But there is much more to it than that. Stewardship is actually the very heart of our Christian faith. Our faith is nothing less than discernment of how we spend everything, not just funds, or hours, or skills but our hearts, and minds, and emotions, our joys and sorrows, our pride and fear to literally spend the very stuff of our lives in love and service. In this sense, how we spend our challenged selves, what we do with our anger and anguish can be as important as how we distribute the fruits of our labor and share our joys. When I came to Trinity in 1994, I was an ambitious young lawyer whose professional success had not brought me the satisfaction I d hoped. Although supported by a happy marriage and myriad good things, there was a big empty space the proverbial God-shaped hole in the middle of my being, and I was struggling to find a deeper meaning for my own life. What I found here was welcome beyond hope, support beyond my dreams, a deep well of caring, and irreplaceable friendship. Trinity shaped my priestly vocation, gave me courage to take my legal career in undreamed-of directions, and showed me a life of reciprocity in giving and receiving, an ebb and flow of offering and accepting support, and collective outreach into the world, that is the very definition of a life of meaning. Trinity also shaped how Christian faith found a way to take root in my marriage, in the heart-space that Jim and I share. Jim was Baptized at the Easter Vigil this year, an enormous blessing to us both. An engaged life of faith is one of continuous struggle. All of our personal challenges, the unsparing unpredictability of human life, our slights and squabbles- as we heard from Carren in her last sermon, we are the people who wrestle with God; who go toe to toe with Jesus in trying to figure out how to be the agents of God in the world. And in this place, we are free to have the hard discussions. Come, now, let us argue it out says the Lord. To continue in this conversation of continuous discernment with my sisters and brothers in this parish is an honor, a privilege and a saving grace. The question is not why Jim and I pledge. The question is, how could we not? WITH COUNTLESS GIFTS OF LOVE - FROM YOUR HEARTS TO OURS Many thanks to each of you who took the time to share your gratitude for gifts received here at Trinity. The gift cards are displayed throughout the sanctuary and are well worth a few moments to read. Here are a few samples of gifts from your hearts: Trinity refreshes my soul each Sunday, The vocabulary of abundance. Trinity is my true heart, and from a child, Friends and a place where I can be myself. If you did not have an opportunity to add your thoughts, cards will still be available this Sunday by the doors. UPCOMING STEWARDSHIP EVENTS FOR YOUR CALENDAR: TODAY after both services, join Christine McSpadden and her family for an interactive forum. Sunday, November 20 is our traditional ingathering of pledges with a special coffee hour after both services. Stay tuned every Sunday for inspiring testimonials from our parishioners, discerning sermons and joyful singing. Please be sure to join the Trinity family at these very special gatherings. 6

7 with countless gifts of love SEQUENCE STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Gracious God, giver of life and source of our freedom, yours is the earth in its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it. From you, we receive all that we have, all that we are, and all that we shall be. You entrust us with your abundance. Help us to use your gifts wisely, and to teach us to share with others as generously as you share your love with us. May our stewardship bear witness to the love of Jesus in our lives, with you and the Holy Spirit. Amen THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS MADE A PLEDGE FOR 2017 AS OF OCTOBER 31 Ayres, Jane D. 8 PSALM 149 REFRAIN Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song; sing praise to God in the congregation of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the children of Zion be joyful in their Sovereign. Let them praise God s name in the dance; let them sing praise to the Lord with timbrel and harp. REFRAIN For the Lord takes pleasure in the chosen people and adorns the poor with victory. Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; let them be joyful on their beds. Let the praises of God be in their throat and a two-edged sword in their hand; REFRAIN To wreak vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples; To bind their rulers in chains and their nobles with links of iron; To inflict on them the judgment decreed; this is glory for all God s faithful people.
