Kevin Christensen is the son of parishioner Jeannie Christensen. He is a graduate of California Lutheran University and holds a Masters of Music in Performance from the University of Arizona. Kevin has lived with his family in Malaysia for the past 8 years where he teaches music at an international school and performs regularly with several local orchestras and symphonic bands. The Season of Pentecost, also known as Ordinary Season, is the longest season in the liturgical year, a time set aside to explore through parable, song, worship and reflection the intersection of the life of Jesus and our own. Over the summer, our preachers will explore the practices of prayer, Sabbath-keeping and generosity in strengthening our calls to take on the mind of Christ. During this time, we come to know who Jesus is and who we are meant to be. PRAYER True prayer, whatever outward form it might take, is first and foremost a condition of loving attentiveness to God in which we find ourselves open and receptive to who we are in our deepest selves. In prayer we say who in fact we are not who we should be, nor who we will we were, but who we are. All prayer begins with the confession of truth of who we are at this moment. It is simultaneously a great relief and challenge to lay aside our masks and postures to be nakedly ourselves. In prayer our hearts are completely open and all desires are known to God. We cannot hide, even if we want to. It can be deeply frightening to be so exposed to the God to whom all hearts are open, all desires known and from whom no secrets are hid (BCP 323), but we also know that prayer involves us in an intimate relationship with a loving God. We are not casting sacrifices into a volcano to placate an angry God demanding payment for sin, or promising a disapproving God that we will be better tomorrow. Rather we are addressing God intimately as the One who made us, loves us and keeps us. ~ Margaret Guenther, The Practice of Prayer Trinity Episcopal Church 1500 State Street Santa Barbara Ca

3 take note notes from the vestry BANNER NEWS! The banner of Trinity Episcopal Church now tells a new story. In addition to the three angels visiting Abraham symbolizing The Trinity and Hospitality, a new learning from the Men s Retreat and Richard Rohr s recent book, The Divine Dance, adds additional meaning. The original icon painted by Andrei Rublev (1425 AD) now resides in Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. The robes were colored gold for the Father, blue for the Son, and green for the Holy Spirit. Recent close examination by iconographers shows a rectangular shape just under the edge of the table facing the viewer. Evidence of an adhesive substance was found within that rectangular space. The speculation is that a mirror was mounted in that space. In the 15th Century Icons were often mounted on a wall at eye level for meditation. If that were the case, a person viewing the icon would see his/her face at the table and would be invited to join the table and thus included in the circle of the divine dance of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This inclusion would make us humans participants in God s plan. Take a closer look at the Trinity Banner at the front of the church at the left near the pulpit and see for yourself. Incidentally, a former Trinity parishioner, Sally Blaine, created the banner about 15 years ago. Sally died in 2009, at Sarah House, from breast cancer. The Trinity Men s Retreat is an annual event. This year s facilitator was The Very Reverend Gary Hall and was held at Westmont College. To find out more about the retreat, contact Mark Benson at markb1315@ gmail.com. LANDSCAPE PROJECT ONLY $2,549 SHY OF GOAL! If you missed the March 5 forum on the project please view the video on trinitysb.org Your financial support of the project may be made on the website or by check at church. Mark your check Plant Fund. Many thanks to those who have given gifts ranging from $15 to $5,000. SIGN UP TO DONATE ALTAR FLOWERS July & August dates still available. Give in remembrance, in celebration, in honor of or just in gratitude. Altar flowers are a wonderful way to mark an occasion. Each Sunday sign up is $ The chart is on the Labyrinth Plaza after the services. The flower donations cover the cost of the flowers and if we do not have a donor, we will use an artificial arrangement. TRINITY READS Adult Formation s recommended book for this season is Protecting Our Common Sacred Home: Pope Francis and Process Thought by process theologian, David Ray Griffin. It is a response to the Pope s Encyclical Laudato Si. This book is a wonderful introduction to process theology. Griffin brings the subject to life, in a deep and gracefully expressed theological narrative reflecting on the world s ecological crisis it is a compelling read for anyone who holds dear the fate of our world. (Mark Asman s Amazon review). The book is available at the Welcome Table. Georgia Noble here, member of the Search Committee and Vestry. It was deeply nourishing for me to participate in our Prayer Circles this past Sunday. Using the famous Stages of Grief as scaffolding, we began by sharing the full gamut of our feelings with one another. We then moved into creating a communal prayer together for Christine, her family, our congregation and the world. For those of you who were not able to attend I wanted to share a few of my Take-aways. Take-away #1 - Sharing deep feelings together is very, very helpful. It allows the feelings to be borne, to be spread out and taken in so we can move to the next place. An image shared by a friend The listening community provides support like the buttresses on a Cathedral they bear the weight so the cathedral can stand tall and reach for God. Take-away #2 We are a tough congregation and we have all the resources we need to get through this time of loss and transition and be better for it on the other side. This is going to make us grow and that is a good thing. We have an amazing staff. We have Laurel and all the other caring Clergy who are coming forward. We have awesome Lay leadership in the Vestry and Parish Council and the Shared Ministry of the whole community. Our mutual love for God and Trinity are making very real to me the notion that we are all in this together. Take-away #3 I am being challenged to trust in God and the Beloved Community more then ever. I share with you a poem I have been reading daily of late. May we use this in-between time to open our hearts and trust more fully. The Avowal by Denise Levertov As swimmers dare to lie face to the sky and water bears them, as hawks rest upon air and air sustains them, so would I learn to attain freefall, and float into Creator Spirit s deep embrace, knowing no effort earns that all-surrounding grace. 3
