1 Parish notes WELCOME TO ALL VISITORS! Trinity is a place where you will find open minds, open hearts and open doors. We believe that as people of God, we can all share in God's love; a love that is inclusive, ever abundant and meant to be expressed through our action in the world. We are delighted to have you with us and hope you will come back often. If you would like to learn more about life here at Trinity please: Fill out a Welcome Card Join us for coffee on the Labyrinth Plaza Parish Notes: These pages contain information about today s worship and our upcoming meetings and events. Open Communion: From whatever tradition you come and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome at our table. You will find simple directions on how to participate in the worship bulletin. Gluten-Free wafers and chalice are available, just ask when the bread is presented to you. Prayer Ministers are available during communion at the 10am service. Proceed to the back of the church to receive prayer and laying on of hands. Children & Youth: Trinity offers religious formation for ages 3½ -12 through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Children gather on Sundays starting at 9am in the church school behind the sanctuary. Trinity Youth Group includes all 7th- 12th graders, and meets approximately twice each month, usually on Sunday afternoons. See Parish Notes for upcoming activities. Children at Communion: Children are brought into the church during the Offertory Hymn to join us for Holy Communion. At this point, you are welcome to gather your children from the nursery to be with you. CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Wednesday, October 11, 7-8pm Scripture tells us that God was revealed to the prophet Elijah not in a great wind, or in an earthquake, or in a fire, but in the sound of sheer silence (1 Kings 19:11-12). Join us for an hour of contemplative prayer Wednesday, October 11, 7-8 p.m. in the Fireside Room. All are welcome. Art Stevens will facilitate the session. Baptism, a principle sacrament of the church, is a joyous public service of initiation. The gathered community takes vows to support the newly baptized, celebrates with and welcomes them; so at Trinity we baptize people of any age within regular worship services. Here is the schedule of baptismal service for 2017: All Saints Sunday, November 5, 8 and 10am services our mission As God s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ. 2
3 take note children and youth BEING AND DOING CHURCH: THE LETTER TO THE EPHESIANS Four Sundays at 9am: October 15, 22, 29 and November 5 The Letter to the Ephesians is perhaps the most sublime yet least known of the NewTestament epistles. As a Pauline midrash on Baptism, the letter explores the implications for prayer and action the sacrament creates. In this four-week series, Gary Hall will lead an exploration of this letter helping us both plumb its remarkable depths and harness its power for living in tumultuous and changing times. What is God up to in the world? In your life? A short study of this profound letter will help prepare us all for the One coming toward us in Advent and at Christmas. Harding School Helpers Ministry Information Meeting, October 15 For over 13 years, Trinity parishioners have been volunteering their time in classrooms at Harding School. Harding is a Westside school where 94% of the student population is Hispanic and 76% are English learners. Opportunities to become involved include working in a classroom on a regular basis or volunteering to help with homework at the A-OK after school program from 3-5:15pm on one day or more per week. If you are a current Harding volunteer, or would like to learn more about this ministry, please join us on Sunday, October 15 in the library after the 10am service. If you would like information before the meeting date, please feel free to contact Susan Krutzsch (916) krutzsch.s@gmail.com or Anne Porter anneporter@gmail.com FALL HAUL AN ALL-PARISH WORK DAY! Since each Level of the program covers a range of ages, often several lessons are offered each Sunday, with most children taking part in only one. Today Level I will learn more ways to beautify and take care of their atrium space, work with the Good Shepherd materials and review some of the preparations that are made for Eucharist. Level II will continue work with the Fettuccia materials, representing the many gifts of love God gives throughout creation, and begin creating personal prayer books, Level III will work with materials depicting the Parable of the Talents and reflect on its meaning for us today. Youth Group Quidditch with the Unitarian Society! Sunday, October 8, 3-6pm. Walk to the park to join the youth of the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara in a rousing game of Quidditch. Bring water to drink, and wear comfy shoes and clothes that you can move in and get dirty. Dinner at the Unitarian Society after the match. Get your Hogwarts on and capture the snitch! 3
4 notes from the vestry To my Trinity family: First, let us welcome Bishop Bruce! Confirmations, a good sermon, the blessing of our garden are all wonderfully fitting ways to celebrate this autumn of our 150th Anniversary. In this 150th year of Trinity Santa Barbara we continue to grow into the parish that we are asked to be at this corner of Santa Barbara and in the greater community. This autumn we will have ample opportunities for our actions to express how much we care for our parish family and, for many of us, our home church. Show how much you care by supporting what promises to be a rousing Pledge Campaign kick-off, Fall Fiesta on October 20. Roll up your sleeves and express how much you care by signing up for Fall Haul, the all-parish workday on October 28. I know from personal experience that when members of our parish family gather, whether to break bread together, gather in worship or fill a dumpster that a caring spirit transforms the moment. We have all chosen to be a part of this parish community but it takes a village so I invite you to celebrate this 150th autumn of Trinity Church by supporting the Pledge Campaign, by bringing your caring spirit to the Fall Fiesta and by showing how much you care for our church campus by rolling up your sleeves for Fall Haul, the all-parish work day. Peace, Stephen Singleton Junior Warden episcopal campus ministry st. michaels in IV CAFÉ PICASSO resumes its weekly Sunday brunch on Sunday October 8 in the Little House at St. Mike s. This is a student-run group that addresses local food insecurity by providing UCSB students with a home-cooked meal, open food pantry, workshops, safe space and great company. take note ABUNDANCE TABLE Thanks to all those who shared their abundance at our table. It was a nice exchange of giving and receiving. Looking forward to June of 2018 when we will start up again. Marlene Carroll flexiblefeet@yahoo.com. community VIGIL AGAINST NUCLEAR WEAPONS Join us on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-6:30pm, when Trinity members and other concerned people of faith join together in a peaceful vigil against the use of nuclear weapons. We will meet on the corner on the steps in front of Trinity Church. The very real threat of being on the receiving end of a nuclear exchange has moved us to engage in a peaceful public display of resistance to President Trump s rhetoric and saber rattling with North Korea. We also encourage our public officials to make a good faith effort to eliminate nuclear weapons from the globe. Signs with peaceful slogans will be made available. Questions? Please contact Karen Claydon (karencc@sbceo.org) or Stephen Singleton, Junior Warden. prayers Please remember these prayer requests during the Prayers of the People and the week ahead. *Please Remember In Your Prayers: Jessie Breytspraak, Eden & his birth family, Art & Judy and all those at peril of deportation, Henry Mealy, Sylvia, The Rev.
