The Season after Pentecost, also known as Ordinary Time, is the longest season in the liturgical year, a time set aside to explore through parable, song, worship and reflection the intersection of the life of Jesus and our own. Over the summer, our preachers will explore the practices of prayer, Sabbath-keeping and generosity in strengthening our calls to take on the mind of Christ. During this time, we come to know who Jesus is and who we are meant to be. GENEROSITY There is a time to give and a time to receive. If we can rest comfortably in this natural rhythm, allowing time and attention for both, we begin to cultivate an easy, effortless sense of replenishing abundance. Giving and receiving are equally necessary elements of generosity. Any authentic act of generosity is that action from which both the giver and receiver find some nourishment or blessing. Just as we breathe in and out, we give, we receive, we give again and gifts of life and love, care and attention, meander this way and that, gentle as a cool mountain stream, quenching the thirst of each as it passes through our hands and hearts. Still, while both giving and receiving are fundamental to genuine generosity, it may be difficult to imagine that our ability to receive, with humility and grace, is as deeply essential as our capacity to give. ~ Wayne Muller A life of being, having and doing enough Trinity Episcopal Church 1500 State Street Santa Barbara Ca

CYC Formation Dinner August 30th, 2017, 5:30-8:30pm Are you interested in the work of the Children and Youth Council at Trinity? Would you like to know more about ministering to our children with special needs? Then please make plans to attend an evening of dinner, visioning, and ministerial formation. Parents, catechists, youth mentors, CYC members, and atrium volunteers are especially encouraged to join us as we envision CYC plans for the year and hear some strategies that will equip us to better serve our special needs children. (Because of the sensitive nature of some of the material presented, this is *not* an intergenerational event, and we ask that families make arrangements to care for young children at home for this night.) We look forward to sharing this vital evening with you! Want more information? Please ehess@trinitysb.org. To RSVP, click on the link in the online Trinity Notes. OUR TOWER PROJECT: Brief Overview Late in 2016, a member of our Building and Grounds Committee observed from street level that a portion of the cast stone ornamentation was missing from the southwest corner of the uppermost level of our narthex tower, which rises over 70 feet. Temporary safety fencing was immediately installed around the tower area, and a Tower Task Force was formed to further investigate this serious situation. Santa Barbara Stone was hired as a consultant, and their principal, Daniel Panissan, suggested that if he could ascend the tower safely (the 92-year- old wooden ladder had proved too dangerous for any tower access), he could propose how best to eliminate loose materials and stabilize the exterior sheathing of the tower. Task force member Loren Solin then designed a safe ladder-and-platform system to replace the old ladder, and now as of this report the final stages of the ladder-andplatform construction are underway. Soon there will be safe access for crews, tools and materials to be moved to the uppermost level of the tower, and the necessary repairs will be made. In addition to remedying the current situation, this new tower-access system will provide safe passage for decades to come. Our deep gratitude goes to all the many volunteers and professionals who were involved in this important project. For more information, please see the flyer at the welcome table. Dear Fellow Parishioners, I m excited to write you as a new member of the Vestry. Before I joined the Vestry, the role of the Vestry had always been a little unclear to me. I understood that it was Trinity s lay executive board, but beyond that...who knows?! Since I imagine that some of you share my feeling, I thought I d describe three things that I ve learned about the Vestry in the past eight months. A caveat. This list is by no means authoritative. Consider it a glimpse into the meeting room from my particular, newbie seat. First and foremost, the Vestry is a collaborative decision-making body. We often use the method of mutual invitation when discussing sensitive issues. In mutual invitation, each speaker concludes by inviting another speaker to contribute. In this fashion, we hear from everyone in turn. I am always energized to see how this method brings us to a thoughtful consensus about how to move forward. Second, the Vestry relies on input from parishioners and the rector and associate rector when making decisions about the future of Trinity. We don t go it alone nor do we want to! Our discussions build on the incredible wisdom of our parish and our clergy. And we have such an abundance of energy and inspiration at Trinity. Please know that we want to hear from you. Third, the Vestry works to ensure that Trinity thrives in the present and also that Trinity looks forward to a secure future. Each meeting brings a new set of issues to discuss, be it necessary repairs to our facilities, revisions to the organizational chart, or the sudden need for an interim rector (!). To face these issues, we leave space in our meetings for the Holy Spirit. My fellow Vestry members are extraordinarily creative. We find the strength to trust each other. It is a remarkable process. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to it on behalf of this remarkable congregation. Kate McDonald 3

How about those over loaded orange trees? Coffee Hour is wonderfully enhanced by the Abundance Table, filled with offerings from parishioners gardens. These are just some of the symbols of our abundance that we share from July through September. Please bring your produce contributions to the table and help yourself to some goodies after the 10am service. Thank you all for your continued support. Please contact Marlene Carroll with any questions regarding this wonderful ministry. flexiblefeet@yahoo.com, CONFIRMATION CLASSES UPCOMING! On October 1, Trinity will welcome Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce to worship with us and to lead our parish family in the sacramental rite of confirmation. Confirmation is the sacrament in which we express a mature commitment to Christ and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop. If you are interested in confirmation, or in the rites of reception or baptism, you are invited to explore Episcopal faith, beliefs, and practice in our confirmation classes this September! All are welcome, whether you plan to be confirmed at this time or not. Adult confirmation classes will be led by The Rev. Gary Hall, and youth confirmation classes (for those in senior high school) will be led by The Rev. Laurel Johnston. All classes include dinner, and meet on Tuesday evenings in September from 6pm until 8pm. Bring your questions!
