Open Communion: From whatever tradition you come and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome at our table. You will find simple directions on how to participate in the worship bulletin. Gluten-Free wafers and chalice are available, just ask when the bread is presented to you. Prayer Ministers are available during communion at the 10am service. Proceed to the back of the church to receive prayer and laying on of hands. Children: Trinity offers a Summer Sacred Arts program for ages 3-10, beginning at 9:45-11am (ask an usher for directions). Children at Communion: Children are brought into the church during the Offertory Hymn to join us for Holy Communion. Over the summer, our preachers will explore the practices of prayer, Sabbath-keeping and generosity in strengthening our calls to take on the mind of Christ. During this time, we come to know who Jesus is and who we are meant to be. GENEROSITY There is a time to give and a time to receive. If we can rest comfortably in this natural rhythm, allowing time and attention for both, we begin to cultivate an easy, effortless sense of replenishing abundance. Giving and receiving are equally necessary elements of generosity. Any authentic act of generosity is that action from which both the giver and receiver find some nourishment or blessing. Just as we breathe in and out, we give, we receive, we give again and gifts of life and love, care and attention, meander this way and that, gentle as a cool mountain stream, quenching the thirst of each as it passes through our hands and hearts. Would you like to know more about ministering to our children with special needs? Then please make plans to attend an evening of dinner, visioning and ministerial formation. Parents, catechists, youth mentors, CYC members and atrium volunteers are especially encouraged to join us as we envision CYC plans for the year and hear some strategies that will equip us to better serve our special needs children. (Because of the sensitive nature of some of the material presented, this is *not* an intergenerational event, and we ask that families make arrangements to care for young children at home for this night.) In Summer Sacred Arts recently, children were asked to draw what the Holy Spirit looks like to them. Here is a sample of the array of drawings that were produced in response to that prompt. Here, the Holy Spirit appears as an outstretched hand, holding seeds. our mission As God s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ. 2

3 TRINITY S CHOIR BACK SOON! First Rehearsal August 31 Trinity s great all-volunteer choir will be rejoining us in our 10:00 a.m. services beginning September 10. Our first rehearsal for the new season will be Thursday, August 31, at 7:30pm in the Guild Hall. We joyfully welcome new members! Home: brothers@westmont.edu CONFIRMATION CLASSES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 5 On October 1, Trinity will welcome Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce to worship with us and to lead our parish family in the sacramental rite of confirmation. Confirmation is the sacrament in which we express a mature commitment to Christ and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop. If you are interested in confirmation, or in the rites of reception or baptism, you are invited to explore Episcopal faith, beliefs, and practice in our confirmation classes this September! All are welcome, whether you plan to be confirmed at this time or not. Adult confirmation classes will be led by The Rev. Gary Hall and youth confirmation classes (for those in senior high school) will be led by The Rev. Laurel Johnston. All classes include dinner and meet on Tuesday evenings in September from 6pm until 8pm. Bring your questions! Dates: Tuesdays, September 5, 12, 19 and 26. CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Wednesday, September 13, 7-8pm Jesus said, I came that you may have life, and have it abundantly. PLAYGROUND APPEAL: DONATIONS NEEDED Trinity s playground will soon feature a new play structure, thanks to a generous gift from the Cantu family! The new structure will be bigger, more fun, and, most importantly, in better and much safer condition than the existing structure, which has now been disassembled. But to make ready for this wonderful change, we need to lay the groundwork, quite literally! With labor, grading, and additional bouncy mulch, we expect to need at least $1500 to cover the cost of this playground refresh. Any amount will be gratefully received. BACK TO SCHOOL -- Help Homeless Children As parents are buying back to school items for their children, we encourage all Parishioners to help homeless and low income families at Storyteller get what their children need. When you re at the store, pick up items on the Storyteller Wish list (crayons, notebooks, diapers, etc.) which help children prepare for school. Purchased items can be placed in the basket dedicated to Storyteller located on the Welcome Table. They will be given to families at Storyteller who cannot buy them for their children. Thank you! TRINITY BACKSTAGE Saturday, September 23, 8pm Join us to hear Michael Lille s heartfelt lyrics about love, loss and the lure and romance of the open road with a cool, breezy, Southern California style. Tickets are $10 at the door or reserve a table for four or more by calling OUR TOWER PROJECT: Brief Overview Late in 2016, a member of our Building and Grounds Committee observed from street level that a portion of the cast stone ornamentation was missing from the southwest corner of the uppermost level of our narthex tower, which rises over 70 feet. Temporary safety fencing was immediately installed around the tower area and a Tower Task Force was formed to further investigate this serious situation. Santa Barbara Stone was hired as a consultant, and their principal, Daniel Panissan, suggested that if he could ascend the tower safely (the 92-year- old wooden ladder had proved too dangerous for any tower access), he could propose how best to eliminate loose materials and stabilize the exterior sheathing of the tower. Task force member Loren Solin then designed a safe ladder-and-platform system to replace the old ladder, and now as of this report the final stages of the ladder-andplatform construction are underway. Soon there will be safe access for crews, tools and materials to be moved to the uppermost level of the tower and the necessary repairs will be made. In addition to remedying the current situation, this new tower-access system will provide safe passage for decades to come. Our deep gratitude goes to all the many volunteers and professionals who were involved in this important project. For more information, please see the flyer at the welcome table. 3

4 prayers FINAL PHASE: First Impression Progress Update Plants have appeared this week! Real signs of our new garden! The site has been graded and amendments have been added. Metal edging has been installed. Installation of visible irrigation components will continue. The flowering pear trees as well as the existing maple and birch trees will be pruned, thinned and shaped in the near future. If you haven t had the chance to make a gift to the Plant Fund yet, contributions will still happily be accepted until December 31. Stephen Singleton, Junior Warden THE SOUL OF AGING With Circles of Trust * small group process Saturday, September 30, 9am-1pm A half-day Introductory Immersion Experience with Georgia Noble & Anne Howard (Intro & Blessing) and Nancy Edmundson, followed by monthly meetings, October - May. In this program, we will creatively approach the art of aging intentionally, and the many soulful invitations our maturing years offer us. This curriculum was developed for those who yearn to understand, surrender to, and be transformed by the aging process. For more information, talk with Art ( ) or Judy Stevens ( ). Base Community Bible Study and Eucharist: Wednesdays, noon, in the library. This group meets each week for Bible Study and reflects on the upcoming Sunday s gospel lesson. These volunteers do things like cook a meal, run an errand, or provide transportation. Helpers are put into a resource pool and called upon on an as need basis.
