1 Parish THE SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 28, 2017 notes WELCOME TO ALL VISITORS! Trinity is a place where you will find open minds, open hearts and open doors. We believe that as people of God, we can all share in God's love; a love that is inclusive, ever abundant and meant to be expressed through our action in the world. We are delighted to have you with us and hope you will come back often. If you would like to learn more about life here at Trinity please: Fill out a Welcome Card Join us for coffee on the Labyrinth Plaza Parish Notes: These pages contain information about today s worship and our upcoming meetings and events. Gluten-Free wafers are available for those who need them, just ask for them when the bread is presented to you. Prayer Ministers are available during communion at the 10am service. Proceed to the back of the church to receive prayer and laying on of hands. Open Communion: From whatever tradition you come and wherever you are in your journey of faith, you are welcome at our table. You will find simple directions on how to participate in the worship bulletin. Children & Youth: Trinity offers religious formation for ages 3½ -12 through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. Children gather on Sundays starting at 9am in the church school behind the sanctuary. Trinity Youth Group includes all 7th- 12th graders, and meets approximately twice each month, usually on Sunday afternoons. See Parish Notes for upcoming activities. Children at Communion: Children are brought into the church during the Offertory Hymn to join us for Holy Communion. At this point, you are welcome to gather your children from the nursery to be with you. Nursery & Toddler care is available 9:15-11am. (Ask an usher for directions). Anne Howard, our much appreciated Preacher-in-Residence. Anne served at Trinity from as Associate Rector and recently retired as Executive Director of The Beatitudes Society. Ascension Sunday The liturgical calendar places Ascension 40 days after Easter. The significance of Easter (resurrection) and Ascension (exaltation) are tied together as two parts of a whole. Together they constitute one sweeping forty-day movement that brings Christ not just from the grave to the skies, but from hell and godlessness to the place of the highest honor at the right hand of God the Father (Phil.2:6-11). This distance bridged in this movement of resurrection and ascension is not measured in the number of miles from earth to heaven but in the amount of distance and destruction that separates us from God. Resurrection and ascension tied together are part of a larger narrative of the triune God s active love of reaching out to creation and bringing the whole creation into fellowship. Just as the incarnation reveals to us the outreach of God s love, the Ascension reveals to us the transfiguration and the gathering up that is to come at the end. The ensemble will present an interesting and unusual program of music by composers Paquito D Rivera, Carl Nielsen, and Jean- Michel Damase. 1 hour duration. Suggested Donation of $10 at the door. It is with shock and sadness that we received the news of Christine s decision to take her leave from Trinity. I also felt a profound sense of loss. Not only a deep sadness for what Christine and her family are going through, but a feeling that what promised to be a time of growth and renewal at Trinity was now halted by the untimely news. In my 20 years at Trinity, we have faced many challenges, and it seems that personal losses are at times the most difficult to bear and comprehend. The life of this parish is organic and the heart of Trinity expands and yes, sometimes contracts in response to community life changes. The coming and going of clergy, and also of parishioners over time affects us all that form the communal heart of our beloved Trinity This breathing, living, joyful and at times mournful community, experiences the breadth of human emotions and those experiences are always infused with the promise of the Holy Spirit ever transforming us as we make our way together. In the weeks ahead, your Vestry and I will work diligently to discern new interim clergy leadership for our parish. I am confident that God will show us the way, opening the doors, helping us discern among the many paths and making the way known for us. The promise of growth and renewal will continue to unfold. Please keep the parish, clergy, and the lay leadership of Trinity and Christine in your prayers as we make our way forward. Claude Garciacelay Senior Warden of the Vestry our mission As God s people, we will share the love of God in a way that nurtures body, mind and spirit. Demonstrating God s love for the world, we will serve a diverse population and accept one another without reservations. By including all people as one family in worship and service to God, we are all empowered and inspired by the Spirit to continue the work of Jesus Christ. 2

Richard presents Experiencing Awe: An Opening to the Transcendent. Most of us have had experiences that have filled us with awe. Yet this fairly common and often powerful experience has been little studied by the scientific community. What is awe? How might it be related to an experience of transcendent realities and of God? Is this an unique human phenomenon? These are questions we will explore through use of visual aids and sharing. Dr. Richard holds advanced degrees in theology and pastoral counseling, a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and is the cofounder of the Science and Religion Study Group. An offering will be received. For further information, contact Dr. Richard at starryrobert@aol.com or LANDSCAPE PROJECT ONLY $7,016 SHY OF GOAL! TRINITY READS Adult Formation s recommended follow-up book to our Lenten series is America s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America by Jim Wallis, forward by Brian Stevenson. Jim Wallis, the nation s preeminent evangelical prophetic teacher and preacher, sends a tough love letter to America, demanding and daring the church not only to repent of the original sin of racism but to join the fight against all forms of racial injustice. I encourage everyone who is concerned about our democracy and who desires to see the church live out its true mission of love and justice to read this prophetic epistle.
