When I first came to serve amongst you as your priest and a brother in Christ I promised that I would do two things in your midst: teach you about Jesus and always love you. I strove each of these 794 days to accomplish those two things. We have experienced many things together during this season including the passing from this life to the next of several beloved and long term parishioners, the abject failure of our physical plant and its rebuilding, and a huge growth in the number of children attending both Christian Formation and worship. I could not be more proud of the work our vestry has done to accomplish many very difficult tasks while keeping our attention focused on the sharing of the Good News of God in Jesus Christ. It is my hope and prayer that each of us knows more about Jesus today and are better at loving one another than we were 794 days ago. Our season together as priest and parish is sadly drawing to a close. After much prayer and discernment Chrissy and I accepted a call to serve a parish in South Carolina. I will conclude my ministry at Trinity on September 30, 2016 and my last Sunday here will be September 11, I am presently working with our wardens, Randolph Boothe- Pharr and Joe Saveika, and the vestry to finalize transition plans so that this can be a holy and healthy transition for the parish. I have every confidence in the leadership that both Randolph and Joe will provide and know that you are in very capable, good hands with the two of them serving as wardens. Know that even as I transition to another call that I will always love you and hold you in my prayers. May the grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, remain with you and all his saints. 2 FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN As autumn approaches, I began to reflect on the year 2016 thus far. Reflecting on our campaign to Grow in the knowledge and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. To grow in love and commitment to one another and the community around us. This year, we have mourned the departure of some of our dear members at Trinity Episcopal Church and we have celebrated some success the completion of the bell tower - for one. As we prepare for Christian Formation to start again on September 18, 2016, we look forward to the Phantom of the Opera presentation on October 29, 2016, to all Saints Day November 1, to Foundation Sunday, November 13, 2016, to Thanksgiving, then it s Christmas Eve Mass, and before you know it, it is the beginning of a New Year. Let us take time to proclaim the gospel of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ who makes it possible for us to remain true and faithful servants. Let us pray for one another and for Trinity Episcopal Church that it remain a center for worship of our Lord for many years to come. 4 STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE The Stewardship Committee would like to thank all of those congregants who submitted a leaf for the GROW campaign. Suggestions were diverse and are currently posted on the stewardship bulletin board. Several suggestions were made which can be implemented with your help. In particular, one of these was beginning a tutoring program at Trinity. If you are interested in pursuing this suggestion, please contact the Stewardship Committee. As a result of this stewardship effort another adult education class is now meeting. Vivian Pharr taught Genesis on Wednesdays this summer and is continuing on Sunday mornings beginning in September. The Blue Tattoo (Joe and Laurine Dabbs) has begun a monthly music gathering. They play instruments and sing during First Fridays in Portsmouth. You may join them and participate on the First Friday in October in either the courtyard or church depending on the weather. A parishioner suggested that Mingles fellowship be established as a social group. If you are interested, please contact Joyce Saveika. Also, an outgrowth of GROW can include a Sunday school class for tweens. The biggest obstacle to this GROWth is four dedicated volunteers. If you can help start this important ministry, please contact Jacky or Chrissy. More information on the stewardship campaign can be found in the weekly bulletin, the Trumpet and on the website. With your support, Trinity can GROW and be a vibrant church right now. We need your pledge and gifts of time to support next year s GROWTH. Joyce Saveika, Chair Stewardship Committee Stewardship... Some people think oh no, pledge time, another letter and more sermons on why we should increase our pledge, to entertain tithing, or donate additional time to church missions. It was not until I became a vestry member did I begin to realize how much cash it takes to run day to day church operations. Aside from all the necessary renovations that we have done, the cost of day to day operations really took me by surprise. Our stewardship pledge is once a year but the money goes for so many daily operations... staff salaries, property maintenance expenditures, Godly Play, music, air conditioning, candles, paper for bulletins and so on. We as Trinity s family need to strengthen our parish with faith, love, money and stewardship. We are all the heart of Trinity and to grow we need to meet the financial needs together. I would encourage you all to increase your pledge this year like I have done. An increase in the total pledge amount is essential if we are to grow as a viable church community. I am hopeful when you understand our financial needs you will be able to help us with an increased pledge. This would allow the vestry to meet the increased budget needs for the upcoming year and help us become a stronger and more vibrant church. Robin Vogt, Vestry Member Trumpet page 4

5 RESTORATION PROJECT UPDATE The renovation work in the church and bell tower are complete. We will be spending the next month inspecting and addressing any outstanding items. As you walk around the church please let me know if you see a problem. The electronic ranks of the organ have been reinstalled in the bell tower. The initial voicing is complete and final voicing will be in October. The Trinity Historic Renovation LLC The LLC has been formed and the State Partner and Trinity Church have made the required contributions. This will become the vehicle for Trinity to receive money for the State Historic Tax credits. This money will be put into savings to help make up for lost income from the foundation withdrawals used to fund the renovation work. 7 CELEBRATING TONY MACKLIN S 30 YEARS AT TRINITY - RECEPTION AUGUST 21, 2016 Parishioners joined in to celebrate Tony s 30 years at Trinity. Fr. Charles presented Tony with a Certificate of Appreciation and a gift of two tickets to a UNC ACC Basketball game. He also received an engraved plaque honoring his service.
