5 take note ANNUAL PARISH MEETING SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10 ONE COMBINED SERVICE AT 9:30am Trinity worships together as one congregation at 9:30am, followed by the Annual Meeting, including a light brunch. This year, we ll elect four new vestry members, and approve a budget for the upcoming year. All are welcome to participate! MEET THE NEW VESTRY NOMINEES FOR 2019 Jeannie Christensen When my church, Grace Lutheran, closed its doors in 2013, I began to search for a new church. The first Sunday I visited Trinity I knew I was home. The message of inclusiveness, justice and love was so clear. I love the concept of shared ministry and how the people here follow Matthew 25. Since coming to Trinity I have served on the Adult Formation and Justice and Outreach Councils. It is an honor to be called to serve on the Vestry. Jim Sterne I became acquainted with Trinity through my wife, Colleen, who has been an active parishioner for more than 20 years. I joined her for Christmas and Easter services, enjoyed helping out occasionally with hands-on work (pew cushions, the Labyrinth), and getting to know other parishioners as friends. I learned a great deal though Colleen s seminary studies and even more while observing as she crafted sermons over the years. I gained the needed confidence in the alignment of my spirituality with the Trinity community s theology to put myself forward for baptism. My work as an usher and on Audio Guild have given me a deeper sense of stewardship and love for the congregation. I am deeply honored to be asked to serve on the Vestry and pledge to give it my very best. Clark Roof Terry and I moved to Santa Barbara in 1989 and after a year or so of visiting churches, we settled upon Trinity. By then Mark Asman had become the rector and there was a growing sense of a new and stronger social and spiritual commitment within the congregation. I was especially drawn to the diversity and progressive views of the congregation. Early on I served for a time on the Vestry until I had to give it up to take on a UCSB faculty assignment for six months out of the country. In 2015, I also chaired the church s Portfolio Committee as we began thinking about Trinity s longer-term future, and especially what should be our vision of ministry and social justice in today s changing world. I am humbled to be asked to serve on the Vestry, and especially now to help carry on this important discussion when we have just welcomed a new rector to work with us in discerning what faithful commitment to the Gospel expects of us in our time and place. Steve Thompson I come to Trinity from 13 years at All Saints by the Sea, where I was on the Vestry and headed up the Buildings and Grounds Committee. I was confirmed at St. Michaels and All Angels in Dallas, TX. Trinity opened their arms to me, just as they open their hearts and souls to all who come through the doors. I m grateful to have found a church home that values diversity and differences. I am a partner of the retail store and design studio Cabana Home in Santa Barbara; a designer and residential developer completing projects across the country. I ve served on non-profit arts and culture committees and Boards of Directors specializing in the preservation of buildings that are National Historic Landmarks. I look forward to the opportunity of putting my past Vestry experience and my understanding of historic buildings to good use at Trinity Episcopal Church! 5

6 TRINITY LENTEN SERIES Trinity Episcopal Church 1500 State St, Santa Barbara, Embracing Transition: Humanity at the Crossroads During Lent we will explore the great shift taking place on a global scale, as humanity transitions from the old order, now in crisis, to a new path forward. The resurrection focus for our 2019 Lenten Series will be co-creating a new consciousness and way of living, firmly grounded in God s eternal truths of love, justice, peace, and reverence for the Earth. Relocating into the OneEarth Paradigm: A Workshop with Lee Van Ham Co-director of Jubilee Economic Ministries. Lee will walk us through the hero s journey from our current, unraveling cultural/economic paradigm which is both unsustainable and unworthy of our true humanity to a new, compelling OneEarth Paradigm, grounded in an expanded spiritual consciousness that empowers us to live in just and right relationship to Earth and all of her inhabitants. Saturday, March 9, 9am-3pm. $10 suggested donation; a simple lunch will be provided. Please sign up at coffee hour on Sunday or by contacting the Trinity Office: or office@trinitysb.org. Dialogues at the Crossroads On successive Sundays during Lent we will further unpack certain specific transitions facing humanity, and our response to them, including: From Ego Consciousness to Christ Consciousness: Who s in the driver s seat of our thinking, feeling and acting? Moving out of Fear and into Love. Church and Spiritual Practices: Transitioning to a creation-centered spirituality/theology as an imperative in the coming age. Putting Money in its Place: Weaning ourselves from the economics of perpetual growth, profit and greed, and embracing the simple elegance of enough. The OneEarth Consumer: How and what we consume and eat is perhaps the single biggest area where ordinary people can have an impact at the moment. Sundays, March 17, 24, 31 and April 7 after the 10am service (~11:30am). Childcare provided if requested by March 3. Contact the Trinity Office: or office@trinitysb.org. 6
