In this weekend retreat, the men of Trinity Church will explore how that divine relationship opens up to include us and the world in an ongoing divine dance of justice, love, and compassion. --Gary Hall BEAUTIFUL STAINED GLASS WINDOWS INSTALLED IN THE CHAPEL Please visit the chapel to see the gorgeous windows that were just installed! Thank you to the committee that made this possible: Colleen Sterne, Ann Jaqua, Iva Schatz, Christine McSpadden, Mark Benson, Vern Bengtson and Michael Neal Arnold, with Susette Naylor (consultant) and Carren Sheldon (in absentia). Dedication on Sunday, April 30. CONFIRMING COMMITMENT TO LIFE OF FAITH Two weeks ago, Trinity presented Kate McDonald to be confirmed and John Gannon and Kathleen Rodgers to be received by Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce into the Episcopal Church at All Saints by the Sea. Confirmation is one of the seven sacramental rites of the Church, in which we express a thoughtful and mature commitment to grow into the fullness of Christ. The laying on of hand by the Bishop is a symbolic action that affirms the Holy Spirit will continue to strengthen and sustain the confirmand in living out his/her baptismal call. Reception into the Episcopal Church, from those who have been baptized and confirmed by other denominations (Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, etc.) receive a handshake or embrace from the Bishop, a sacred gesture of welcome into the Episcopal branch of the Christian faith tradition. Baptism, Confirmation, Reception into the Episcopal is always done in community. Sponsors Teresa Pietsch (for Kate McDonald) Mac McNeel (for Kathleen Rodgers), Stephen Singleton (for John Gannon), The Rev. Laurel Johnston, and Kristi Wallace represented the wider Trinity community in offering our prayer, witness and commitment to nurturing one another in faith. Today, please warmly greet Kate, Kathleen and John and offer your blessing in reaching this milestone in their journey with God, and one another. WOMEN S CIRCLE SEEKING NEW MEMBERS Women s Circle, which meets every Thursday 10:30-noon, has 2 open seats available. We are starting a new book study, Pema Chodron s How to Meditate. We are also using Jack Kornfield s The Wise Heart as added inspiration. We split our time between spiritual reflection and personal sharing. We take turns leading the group discussion. Regular attendance is requested. Interested? Contact: Teddie Foreman

5 take note prayers AN INVITATION TO HOLY WEEK Continued from page 1 The liturgies of this week particularly invite us to three actions. First, they invite us to the actual historical events connected with the Passion (suffering), death, and resurrection of Jesus. Second, they invite us to participate in spirit, mind, and body by memory, re-enactment, sensory experience, and application to contemporary circumstances. Third, they invite us to proclaim the reality of the risen Christ who lives today. Originally, Lent was observed only during Holy Week. It was later lengthened to 40 days in honor of the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness. The first day of Holy Week is Palm Sunday, the day Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The palms a sign of life in the desert are blessed. The Passion narrative is read, usually in parts to re-enact the story of Jesus last days. After the Passion the service takes a turn toward the somber. Often worshipers fold the palms into crosses, take them home and put them near religious objects or in religious books as reminders of this central story for our lives. The following year, they are burned to make the ashes imposed on Ash Wednesday. Maundy Thursday begins the Triduum, or three days between the last supper and the resurrection. The word Maundy comes from the same word as mandate and means to command, echoing Jesus words, A new commandment I give you: that you love one another as I have loved you. At Trinity, we gather for an agape meal. We share a simple meal in which we enact the washing of feet as Jesus washed the apostles feet modeling his ministry of humble servanthood. The night also commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist. Finally the reserve sacrament (bread and wine left from the meal) is processed into the church to an altar of repose, an altar different from the main altar, often decorated with flowers. A vigil is kept through the night, reminiscent of the night the disciples waited with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. All ornaments, books, and linens are stripped from the sanctuary, reminding us of the barrenness and desolation the disciples felt when Jesus was carried off. On Good Friday, we recount the story of the crucifixion. The mood is one of dejection yet a sense that through the cross, God s glory is made manifest. We practice a veneration of the cross in this service. People are welcomed forward to the cross to express their reverence and thanks for the gift of salvation. We also receive communion from bread and wine that has been consecrated before. All reserve bread and wine is consumed. We enter into the tomb. No bread or wine can be consecrated until the Great Vigil of Easter. The final and most magnificent liturgy of Holy Week is the Great Vigil of Easter. The earliest Christians were Jews who marked the beginning of the day at sunset, on the eve. The service begins in darkness. A fire is kindled from which a great candle, called the Paschal (which means relating to Easter or Passover) candle, is lit. The Paschal candle is carried in procession into the church the Light of Christ and worshipers individual tapers are lit from it. Readings recount salvation history, we reaffirm our baptismal vows, we cross over into Easter with a great acclamation, Alleluia, Christ is risen, and the first, Easter eucharist is celebrated. The liturgies of Holy Week present us with the drama, the majesty, and the mystery of the first salvific events and, through our worship, we enter into that story anew and bind it to our own stories here and now. The liturgies also provide an experience whereby we prociam the resurrection faith and life we receive through grace. You are invited to partake in the full experience of these services in which these most ancient of liturgies reveal themselves to be the most contemporary because they proclaim and make manifest the living God in this present world.
